I think one of the definining features of SWG was the player cities and homes, it added not only variety and character to each server, but an interesting sense of player control over the environment, which is a rare quality in an MMO. Could someone please confirm whether they plan to give a player cities option?

From what I'm inferring (lit. guessing based on very little information) housing will be implemented into the game in the form of player owned ships (a bit like KOTOR).

Best option imo, who wants a tattooine mudshack downwind of a bantha breeding ground when one can have a shiny shiny pewpew laz0r firing freighter that you can fly around in?

Actually I agree with you. After playing SWG on and off since beta, I liked the ship interiors a lot better than the player housing. I would want to have SOME kind of a house, but the mobile home variety (as long as it flys) would be my choice as well. Nasty, smelly creatures those Bantha's....

You would be surprised how cool it was to live on Tatooine in SWG.  It was one of the more popular places to build your homes, same goes with Lok, people like their deserts

Oh God YES YES YES!

This!

Everybody wants to have every single percent of the landscape filled with houses ,it feels so Star Warsy!

Nothing more iconic then having a field filled with square buildings as far as the eye can see, makes you feel like you are really living on a barren deserted planet like Tatooine in the movies!

But I demand that we get lots of lots like in SWG, so I can put down a guildhall, a crafting house, a storage house, like 20 of those, a living house, and all my friends...umm...alts as well ofc. AND I demand that Tatooine is a flat planet, so I can build EVERYWHERE, in the old SWG I couldnt put houses down on hills. so I want a 100% flat surface.

oh yeah, and shuttleports around every corner, so that I dont have to travel, I want to be able to travel all corners of the map within 10 secs, without shuttle times ofc, shuttle travel should be instant.

Yeah I used to love sitting by my house looking at the sun rise with my creature Handler and go out taming creatures into mounts and then walking into Bestine (which was the most popular back then) and selling my mounts and creatures to people. However they nerfed CH and noone wanted them anymore and mounts only lasted like a week before they patched in vehicles which made them useless and noone wanted them anymore. So I ditched CH and went TKM.

LOL!

I also say hell yes to player cities. Nothing is more Star Warsy than urban sprawl and homes with names like "F*&%$ SOE!!."

This game is too Star-Warsy and iconic for player housing.  Seriously, who has a house in the Star Wars universe?  You must be out of your mind.

Obi Wan had a home on Tatooine.

And Jabba had a palace:

I kinda like the ship idea.  That way my house (and storage) is with me on EVERY planet.

Oh come on. You know that the Uncle Owens of the world had houses and they spent their time plopping dowm moisture vaporators. Who needs to be Han Solo or Luke Skywalker when you can be Uncle Owen or a dancing Twilek? This game would be so much more star warsy if they allowed thousands of players out of millions to roleplay farmers and dancers.I was particuliary looking forward to taking a screenshot of my first house and posting it to my facebook page.

From some of the replies, I get the feeling that we got some 'sand worshipping, Krate Dragon hugging', environmentalists here.  I mean, who wants to watch the two suns set over some empty 'Dune Sea', when it can be filled, with houses, factories and cantinas, complete with fountains and palm trees.

In all seriousness, the player cities and housing in SWG made the planets look like giant trailer parks.

Player housing in SWTOR should either be ships or instanced within existing buildings or instanced within a 'housing zone'.

No. TOR will be nothing like SWG. Not that TOR will be anything like WoW, but it'll still be more like WoW than it will be like SWG. It won't be sandbox, and players won't have much if any impact on the environment.

So far it sounds like it may not have any open areas period....why should they waste their time on it when they can just simply "teleport you to their next page of their story telling"....

Yessss much less coding for all those lazy greedy game developers to spend their time on, with this IP they will probably make all their development money back double just from the box sales.....most likely there will be a couple mill subs lingering around to experience the 8 different stories and finish the game.........and then fall asleep.

Does that mean no <PL> to kill? Damn, and I thought this game was going to be fun :(.

One of the things I absolutely loathed about SWG was the urban sprawl. It destroys the game to find Tatooine covered in nothing but ugly empty buildings when it should be full of desert vistas.

They say they will not add it. I can only hope that they're telling the truth.

The game isn't out yet so can't say for sure, but if you want to "try" and kill <PL> then come to AION till thenb  :=)

But so far it's not sounding to much like they want people running around fighting each other and creating their own MMORPG storyline. <shrugs> Much less have player cites or non instanced housing.

I hate that amount of fanboysm.

"TOR doesnt offer it so we dont need it. It sucks anyway!!!!111"

Come one guys. Housing is a great thing if implemented right.

No need to make it free to build anywhere but they can include areas where players can build /rent houses. Something like DAoC. Even LoTRo implementation (with multiple instances) is better than nothing.

Personal ship as a form of housing.. hmm.

I doubt we'll be able to travel to a hangar (like in a housing area) and visiting houses. I think it'll be something like "you walk into the hangar ...board your ship now? (y/n)" and then be transported into your private ship.

Sorry, but you'll be too busy doing iconic and Star-Warsy things to do something as un-heroic as watch a sunset.  In fact, why even put in a sky when looking at it means you are an Uncle Owen sissy?

You do realize that most people in SWG were combat professions like Jedi, Rifleman, etc....right?  Because if you don't, you shoudn't try to be witty with false information.

Seriously though, who has time to do anything but heroically slash and stomp iconic villains and save the Star-Warsy locations from legendary evil-doing?  I mean, to be doing anything but bravely cutting down waves of goons would be.....heresy and Uncle Owenish!

I think there is a hugely mistaken point that we need to think about. For me its not about player cities, so much a it is about the economy. IF the devs understand what a somewhat-realistic economy can do for a MMO, than they will go far. Forget player cities and housing altogether, unless it involves trading and the economy... IE stations in EVE. If 1/5 players can play SWTOR somewhat "passively" then I promise you will see this game rise to the next level.

1/5 being that is probably the ratio(or 1/10 for that matter) of players wanting to be traders and builders or whatever. If trade can become a primary path to greatness, then player made items, namely consumables, would really make the game feel more like an adventure. You have to interact with a trader to get some more X item before your next outing. More than just a quest grind to level cap>>Raids(or whatever is endgame). It adds more down time, but if the game is constantly accessible, than you have a worn out MMO 1 month into launch.

Geez, you need to lighten up. That was complete sarcasm and I'm sure you're the only one here that didn't get it.
