I'm probably not the oldest and wisest person who browses this website, but at the same time I'll gladly admit my age of 24.  I do apologize for not giving EVE a decent chance before casting it aside and thinking negatively about it.  As I've stated several times already on this thread I'm giving EVE another chance....After I finish my registration to Beta Fallen Earth though. :)

He stated ge wasnt the oldest or wisest, your reply confused me.

Sorry Im a bit new to the forums but a good majority of you have been to an extent overly harsh to the guy.

Did you bother to even read what he said before you decided to insult him, people on these forums need to chill out who cares if he said it takes 30mins or 30secs, grow up

What is the Fascination with EVE online?

Unless they've completely changed how you gain access to new tech in the game it was the worst purchase I ever made.

My month was used up before I even got anything cool to play with, I barely got a Frieghter and all I could do was haul stuff from an asteroid mining belt back to base.

My personal feeling on EVE Online was that the Graphics and Music were A++ but the Gameplay was a D-

I didn't start this forum to cause any arguments, I came here to find a good game to play and for the most part I've done just that.  For those of you who like or dislike EVE and Fallen Earth, hey that's your opinions and you're welcome to them.  Personally I'm liking Fallen Earth so far and I agree that the graphics are beautiful but the gameplay is lacking in EVE, so I'll  continue until the 14 day trial is up and I'll make a decision then.

Tabula Rasa (RIP) Was the only other SciFi game that came remotely close to EVE Online in scope of Graphical Awe

And as of yet...I haven't found another online game that matches EVE Online with the music available.

From what I can read up on and tell there's at least half a dozen SciFi type MMOs in the works.

I think the problem is that EVE has a real steep learning curve. I kind of did not care too much for it either in the begining, but things changed dramatically once I fell in with a good corp and really started researching some of the more obscure aspects of the game.  If all you do in EVE is missions and mining, then yes, it's one of the most boring and repetetive games out there. But there is so much to do there that is not emidiatly obvious that it's not even funny.

lso I find the biggest problem with having a sci-fi mmo is that sci-fi has so many different branches and offshoots that it's hard to make something that encompasses it all.  Steampunk, Space Opera, Post-Appocaliptic, Cyberpunk, Horror Fiction, Alternative History, Time Travel and to an extent even Super Heroes are all science fiction. Yet not everyone likes all those genres and some who might like one may even hate another.

With fantasy it's a bit more simple. Mostly because everyone seems to have used Tolkien as a benchmark. So basically throw in Elves, warriors, wizards and clerics and you are good. Or at least it's what most game designers seem to think.

Actually Steampunk is SciFantasy a heavy blending of the two genres (Points towards NeoSteam)

There's also a secondary classification to fantasy which is HIGH fantasy, that's when you toss in all the wacky aspects of fantasy like fairies and pixies and such.

Worse comes to worse, just get a copy of Microsoft Games FreeLancer, download the discovery mod and connect to a Role Play discovery server. (i do that with some of my friends and the server is a max 200 player ratio which isnt too bad)

Yes i am deeply saddened that Tabula rasa died, i was there since the beginning and lost a lot of money invested in it and friends too... nothing has really been the same since they closed that game down.. and there are too many freaking Fantasy MMO's out there, no one seems to like the science fiction areas anymore... Planetside died out a long time ago as well which pissed me off that was fun too...

Why cant people see that SCI FI IS A MONEY MAKER!!!! damnit!

I can see it coming, either some of you are either going to yell at me, or laugh at me for saying this, but I'll say it anyway.  Over the last 3 days EVE has grown on me and I'm really beginning to like it so far.  A small corporation has picked me up, and I'm doing pretty well actually.  Jumping through 15 waypoints to get to a destination gets boring and I wind up roaming around the house while the Autopilot is in control, but other than that the game really is quite enjoyable to play.

That's debatable. There are lots of sci-fi out there that have a distinct fantasy element and are usually classed as sci-fi instead of fantasy.

For example Lexx or even Doctor Who can both be heavy in fantasy elements yet are considered by most as sci-fi and not fantasy. Like I mentioned before there are many aspects and branches to sci-fi, Sci-Fi being one of them.

There are also a lot of branches in fantasy, but for the most part, video games in general tend to favor the foundation that was laid out by the table-top version of D&D, which was based in great part on Tolkien's work, which was high fantasy.

For a few months I re-installed Freelancer and was playing on the Void servers.  Freelancer was good too, but it gets repetative.  I'll stick with EVE for now, but I'll continue to watch Jumpgate Evolution for when that's released as well.

You know Speaking of D&D I hope this new F2P model they're developing helps them in the meantime I'll still eagerly await an MMO for D&D Set in the Forgotten Realms.

I remember when DDO came out, I thought a micro-transaction model would have been better suited for the game.  That alone would have been a statement to players, "This isn't your typical MMO, so don't expect one!"

The game garnered to many comparisons to GW for its own good (the fact that both were heavily instanced and GW was free while DDO required subscription fees).  I wouldn't be surprised if DDO had launched with the new F2P model, it would have been more successful to Turbine and more respected by players.

well there's that and if they hadn't chosen such a bass ackwards realm to stick it in (Eberron)

I mean if they had just gone with Forgotten Realms in the first place they'd be gazillionaires twice over by now.
