I was downloading the game to try it out until i read this. I am probably the minority in this but i absolutely hate quest driven games.  There are many reasons but I wont go into too many specifics.

I have been playing "pay to play" mmorgs for about 10 yrs now. Unfortunately the only decent grinding games are EQ and Daoc. Everything new (P2P) thats come out in the last 5 yrs is all quest driven. I have pretty much played those 2 games to death and have been looking into F2P games instead. Since you say you have tried them all i thought you might recommend a decent grinding game.

To give you and idea what i am looking for . . .

I prefer fantasy ( elves , dwarves , ect . . ) over Sci-fi

I prefer group friendly games. One of the reasons i dont like quest driven games. They are too solo oriented and make for poor communities.

I prefer realistic graphics. I hated the cartoon graphics of WoW. I played Age of Conan with max graphics and no lag. So i'm pretty sure my PC could handle about anything out there.

PvE games prefered over PvP.

It's not free to play but it's cheaper than all the other p2p games out there, but the only game I can think of that covers every prerequisite of yours is FF11. It's not quest driven. Most of the time to level you have to be partied with people and have to take down mobs. Each one doesn't take one or two hits either, most of the time, you have to have a well organized party, with each person having a specific job they must do while in it, in order for the group to succeed and the mob to die without too many casualties. So that covers your group friendly, and non quest driven. It is fantasy themed. It has elves an little midgets and your ogre/gorilla looking races, cat people. etc. The graphics aren't too very cartoonish. They are sort of anime inspired, but they're realistic in their look. They're no age of conan, even with the rumored graphical update supposedly happening later this year, but if you're looking for more realistic than wow, they have that covered. The UI takes a bit getting used to though, it plays like no other mmorpg out there, for good or bad.

If you're interested go to the FF11 forums section and talk with some people there, and try to get a mentor. Most of the really helpful players on this forum are on the Kujata server I believe, but you're welcome to go and find anyone who is willing to mentor you and show you the ropes. It's heavily macro driven instead of hotbars you have to either find what you want to do via menus, or make a macro that you can use with the combination of alt, and ctrl, and I think even shift. Anywho it's the only game I can think of that covers everything, and I've always had fun with the game. It was my first MMO so I had nothing else to compare it too, so the UI I thought was just how mmo's were down back in what 2002-3? Anywho, once you get used to it, and it doesn't take long, it'll begin to feel like second nature, just like anything else, and you'll be whooping mob butt, in no time. I highly reccommend finding a mentor though, they can help the transition SO much easier. They can possibly get you into their linkshell(guild) which is also something that you should look into getting as soon as possible. I hope you find what you're looking for though. Good luck!

Guess he never played Guild Wars before. Guild Wars is by far the best f2p without a monthly fee or an item mall.

actually Runes Of Magic was never even designed to be a free to play game. it's a micropayment game which can be played for free for cleaver marketing reasons because Runewaker and Frogster figure there can be more money in free to play games than in pay to play games and they invent all sorts of ways to make players spend cash constantly, some esthetical, some with a significant game impact. even the pve balance for the dungeons is based on top gear which in practice can only be optimised using cash shop items.

however on a brighter note they've also added the means to obtain these items for free players and this makes it the only so-called 'free' game i know which gives all free players a theoretical chance to fight against paying players on equal terms by providing an indirect access to that cash item shop. Runes Of Magic does deserve credit for that, even though theory and practise are still miles away and if you ever read the word "fair" from one of the spokesmen then you should keep in mind that they probably never played the game like the average player does.

sure it's one of the best available 'free' games but it mostly teaches more about how loosly the word 'free' is used on commercial internet sites. i'd call Runes Of Magic a FREE TO PAY game, which is already an improvement compared to many other 'free' games.

I understand you a little.  Actually since you brought it up, I actually don't mind grinding all that much.  And my favorite grinding game was Shaiya.  I thought it had great and realistic/epic fantasy graphics.  The servers are surprisingly smooth almost 100% of the time.  It's F2P.  The catch, for you, is that it centers heavily around massive PvP. But I would still suggest it for you, because all the PvP zones are kept separate from the other zones.  I spent about a month soloing and chatting in zone until I found a guild where we ended up spending more time soloing and just chatting with each other socially, or helping each other grind and level.  There are some fun dungeons and bosses, and if you ever did get the itch to go into one of the PvP zones, you'd have the option.

I also agree with the person who mentioned FFXI.  It's pay though.  That reminds me, keep an eye out, because in 2011 0r 2012 is when FFXIV the MMORPG comes out :)

Also, although I got a little bored of it, Last Chaos is very popular, has many servers(unusual for a F2P) and some are Roleplay and I believe PvE.

Silk Road had potential but it is plagued with bots, and I don't mean the way other games are.  Sometimes it really looked like every character on a server were all bots.  And this bot problem was even more confirmed when I saw the forums and the devs trying to convince players they were cracking down and releasing lists(with hundreds of names) so often, saying they deleted this many bots this month....

Atlantica Online is a terrific game with great graphics and a completely, and really fun, player driven economy.  The PvP is kept entirely as a separate arena that you only participate in, if you want.  But this game is a strategy rpg like FF tactics or disgaea.  However, it is a fresh alternative and play style that i just love(personally I can't devote the time to it as a traditional MMO, i like it better in short bursts).

And lastley, if you really like Lord of the Rings, Rohan Online looks VERY much like a LotR world, even the music:)  I haven't played it since their last major update where they added a new class, but I heard that it really improved the game.  The graphics are more realistic too, but not quite next gen graphics like the newer MMO's(but the graphics are still really good, I think)

I hope that helps?

RoM is an OK game but nothing special really...it doesnt really bring anything new to the genre, but basically just takes what wow did and continued along the same lines.....While it does offer some cvariety (dual classes for instance) it is basically still just quest, quest quest till your brains fall out......I think it is an Ok alternative if you like games like WoW and dont want to pay but as far as a permanent I dont think so.

Yes thank you . This helped a lot. I am a  Lord of the Rings fan so am going to check out Rohan online. I didn't like Turbine's  LotRO at all. I have never liked any of their games though. I just felt the combat was very dull.

I may check out Shaiya also. I dont mind PvP , so long as the adventure zones are kept seperate.

Rappelz is pretty close to 100% free with almost all of their cash shop items being tradeable.   If the game didn't suffer from lag when the servers are under heavy use, and sieges weren't so laggy it would be better than RoM.  Right now its a pick your poison between the two.

Edit: I heard if you have top of the line computer you don't suffer from the lag, but I kind of doubt that.

I disagree.  Rappelz is a simple grinder at it's core.  There is no situational combat like in a bigger pay to play game, like WoW(but RoM is).

On top of that the grind is hard, and like any grinder, harder at higher levels.  I heard you'll sit in one room, for weeks killing the same monsters to grind enough to level up.  Not much of a variety or fun gameplay if you ask me.

The only good thing I heard about Rappelz is the pets you can get.  And RoM is getting trainable pets that battle with you, this September.

Definately, one to keep on the list for playing though.
Those bashing the game earlier in the thread are just those idiots you see in every post. Seriously, no respect.

Why do you call somebody who thinks a game is not worthy of their time or money idiots? Do you think every game that exists is great? And if you don't would you be an "idiot" for expressing that opinion?

Seems like many people who like ROM like to insult people who don't. That says a lot about the ROM community I suspect.

Runes of Magic is the best free 2 play game. those who try to talk about rappelz... well im sry but rappelz is one of the worst grind games ever plaid.

Runes of Magic is the first f2p game that can be compared to p2p games. its even better then 80% of the p2p games.

Actually the game is becoming extremely popular, especially in the last 2 weeks, and I believe this years E3 will be a larger instant boost towards their climb.  All the MMORPG sites have it rated within their top 10 now, and it's only 2 months out Beta.

It's nothing like any of the existing F2P(I played all of them, yes ALL) Every F2P up until now, was a grinder.  There was little to no situational combat, and you simply had to grind through thousands of mobs to gain lvls.

Runes of Magic is quest driven, like WoW, with special attention on daily quests(They reward a particular kind of in-game "currency" needed to complete tasks).

The game has many exciting unique features mostly found in large-scale pay to play games, but uses a cash shop.

I know your dissappointment with not wanting on PvP because spenders will use cash shop to gain advantage, but RoM doesn't do that.

I love RoM's cash shop.  Everything in the shop will only help you do things faster in-game.  There is nothing in cash shop that you can't do in game.  I find it truly fair for an RMT business model.

search around some more.  RoM has already gotten quite a few awards.

It is by far the best F2P that exists right now.  Nothing in the RMT business model can beat it.  I dare say that even finding what is 2nd best is the difference between WoW and the 2nd best pay to play.

I know this is a fanbois post, but i try to look at posts objectively. There is a couple F2P games i had some fun playing, but that would sort of be biased to state they are better or every bit as good.

I will say this, ROM is a very good effort for a F2P game,heck it is a decent effort for a P2P game.I could see myself rating it up their near the top of the heap for sure.

I know many AION fans will be downright angry, when i say ROM is a MUCH better over all game than AION and it's one dimensional gameplay>>.flying PVP.

The one place ROM fails is in it's typical F2P bs trying to sign up and D/l the game,it may be a lot more organized now, idk.
