C'mon...you gotta love the WoW movement. It's great. I compared everything to WoW: jobs, cars, foods. I even proudly compared WoW to my wife thinking to compliment her. After I got mad aggro from her, she critted me with her uber "Backhand of forebearance", which de-leveled me to noob status, I decided to give up my membership to WoW's "Similes and metaphors". For some odd reason, she didn't mind when I called her "My little Taru taru" before...

Comparing a game to WoW really doesnt bother me, WoW did this, and WoW did that, its generally easy to point out that "WoW did that, and did it badly" or "WoW did that, but that was in 2004" . What really pisses me off, is when people use PERFECT WORLD as a guide and reference to Aion. There are certainly similarites, such as the robust character system and flight. However, the majority of those that do use PW as a reference, usually assume Aion is roughly the same-except you cant fly forever in Aion(making it suxorz) this angers me to no end lol. It's almost 2010, and I am just not wiling to tolerate clunky graphics while being told that "gameplay is more important than graphics". That excuse won't wash with me any more. I expect my games to have both good graphics and good gameplay. |

If you compare to wow - then everybody knows what you are comparing to.

Why can't we compare the game both to Lineage 2 and WoW? The world isn't black and white you know (nor is the MMORPG industry). Lineage 2 comparison is relevant in the sense that it is the same company behind them both but Aion is claiming to be much more casual than Lineage 2 so then obviously then it will be compared to the MMORPG that basically gave birth to casual MMORPG, which is WoW. |

Perhaps I should have been more clear in my topic title. I don't mind good-natured comparison, if you read my entire post you would see I myself compared it to wow and mentioned it was a smart move to borrow some of wow's marketing methods. What I am upset about, and what everyone else other than yourself picked up on, are those people who call it a rip-off of WoW and say the game stole this concept or that idea from Wow when in fact these same design concepts were utilized in Lineage II which released BEFORE WoW. If you were going to compare an orange to a fruit you wouldn't say "omg that orange is so stupid, it has seeds, it so stole that from the apple!" but saying "the orange, like the apple is a seeded fruit" is quite acceptable. I'm just tired of kids these days thinking they know everything about MMORPGs simply because they've played WoW and assume that being the most popular means it came up with every original concept and borrowed nothing itself.
Ok this I agree on. In fact more then agree I think too many companies are actually making design decisions strictly to avoid being the same. Frankly I think a smart designer stteals everything that works well from his competion and then builds from there :) I remember SOE doing this with EQ. When DaoC came out there were numberous innovative features the UI had that EQ didn't. Within about 6 months all the good UI features in DaoC had become part of EQ. Wow like every other game is based largely on what came before. Wow was well done in that it was built on the games before. It wasn't a gimiky game it was evolutionary taking what worked in other games and trying to build onto it innovating not for the sake of being different but trying to improve things. So is Aion ripping off wow? You bet they are ripping off every game that has ever existed until now. And that is the SMART thing to do. Build on what works don't try to toss out history and build something from scratch cause you are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past. So your title should have been, Stop claiming that AION is a rip off of WOW. This I'm totally onboard with!! |

Well there were people claiming Everquest 2 was a WoW clone even though it was released before WoW. Heck I'm sure some even thinks Everquest 1 is a WoW clone despite the fact that Everquest was released several years before WoW and that WoW in fact took a lot from Everquest. There was very little originality in WoW. Ultima Online had pvp before WoW, Dark Age of Camelot had Realm vs Realm before WoW. MUDs and single player RPG's had levels, quests, races etc long before WoW.

Yes that was because EQ2 was a different game when it launched then it is now. At first it was a lot harder. From harvesting, crafting to leveling, seriously you couldn't do a whole without a group after level 20 if I remember right. Then WoW comes along and explodes all over the MMO scene. And then Eq2 got revamped and many people at the time cried WoW nerfage. Maybe that's where this whole WoW dummyification movement came from... o.o (,,,)=^__^=(,,,)Game Latte Vidcast |

Original EQ2 was consistent with the everquest style of grouping and actually being part of the community. MMO's are not game for soloists ![]() |

How about we just say that both WoW and Aion suck? They both lack any features, and they both have the same damn setting. Infact just about anybody with $300 to burn, can go buy Realm Crafter Pro and some public resources, and make an MMO. The fact that there's so many MMOs that are clones of each other should say something. I've played WoW for years, and I'm in Aion beta, and in my opinion these games are either over hyped (Aion) or the same crap that's been out for the past 6 years with no actual new features besides letting people who have no life and leveling their char to level 70, giving them the ability to fly. I belive that people should leave these crappy clones behind, and support something new or innovative (Star Wars TOR & Champions Online). |
