I have been playing eve online for a long time (since 2005), but current events has forced me to consider alternatives.

Are there any other games out there with the same sandbox style play?

Preferably sci-fi,but fantasy is also acceptable.

I want a game that doesnt only have combat and instances, but also industry and market (the things that made me start playing eve in the first place..)

Saga of Ryzom is out of the question, but im open for other suggestions.

well without the Saga of Ryzom your only (literally) choice left is Wurm online.  The Industry is certainly there, all of the towns and items are player made and you need to make everything you use to survive.  Combat is very tough.  Graphics are severelly dated (but its playable).

seriously though there are no other sandbox games out there (unless you look to future releases or F2P)

I was looking for one a looong time now but I am affraid you will find out that EVE has unfortunately no comparable product on the market :-(

Playing with 3 accounts since Jan 2006, it's a long time, had my breaks tho, but always came back.

Unfortunately, ppl will come here and say: There is no such a game, EVE is unique in several aspects, not only the sandbox it is.

In Aug 2008 I came here to MMORPG.com to ask almost the same question, have tried a dozen trial, played LotRO for a couple of monhs, PotBS for a month or so and there was me, again, in my 3 accounts on EVE till some days ago... I'm dowloading, right now, AoC in a 7 days trial to see what happened with the new expansion.

No matter what we can say to you, the same game that I love could be one that you hate. Go for the available trials and see for yourself, I know we spend a lot of time in dowloading something we just install and say "OMG, what ..." But there is no other option.

You could always read the forums and articles about some game before trying to DL it, but will give you only the "others" perspective, not yours.

Good luck and lets hope something come in the near future.

Me nor anyone else is saying that other games are bad but indeed there is no alternative or comparable to EVE because it is the only game with such level of complexity - especially for industry and market.

As for me, I tried all those trials as you did, now having fun with AA3 but can't really say any of thoe games is an alternative to EVE. The games are different, fun in their way but not in EVE way :-/

Maybe Jumpgate: Evolution is the answer?

Not even close. Jump gate is a shooter MMO and it lacks the complex market dynamics of EVE.

As I said, the game I love could be one you hate. Ppl are diff as games are, each one must find your place to have fun by tring it, there is no other option, and that is why I said "unfortunately". I agree with you 120%.

Another important aspect for me (that i didnt mention) would have to be that the game doesnt have the "xp - level" annoyance most MMOs have. I hate having to "work" ingame to keep up with friends.

In EVE at least you could always participate most of the time, if you had 1 mil or 50 mil sp :) I want some other game that allows that, dont care if they use the same mechanic as EVE or not though.

Why not trying EVE again? Start from scratch or just turn your focus into some unexplored part of tha game/industry ?

Sadly there is none. Well not until CCP makes WoD. :(

I played EVE for awhile.

I just couldn't get used to hyperspacing through a freakin planet.  I know there has to be clipping but FREAKIN COME ON!  Its a stupid PLANET!

Besides that, it was a good game.  It just wasn't for me

mortal online is sandbox, fantasy, and about to go into pre-order beta.

I'm still playing EVE now actually.. Cant put it away.. ;) But im just curious if there are any alternatives because sometimes the faults of EVE (to me) are just to in your face if you know what i mean.

Maybe Fallen Earth is a possibility? They are supposed to have exploration, industry and the setting is nice (always loved post-apocalyptic games like the Fallout series).

Wod is WORLD OF DARKNESS. As in vampire, werewolf, mage, ghost and such. More a horror supernatural MMO than gay vampire MMO.

Still, i guess players are gonna ruin the mood, cant wait to see 100 Blade clones running around in game.. *sigh*. Still gonna play it though! Love White Wolf's RPGs, been running and playing them for years.

Darkfall perhaps? It is a sandbox game althought it hasnt quite been out long enough to develop economy. Mortal Online will be out soon.

Vendetta Online is good. Its got great devs and a decent community. Also its cheap. Its like Eve only not as much eye candy and far fewer people. They just went through a major update or are about to. If you like Eve you'll probably like Vendetta.

Just based on this criteria alone, the only two games I know that are currently out are Ryzom and Mabinogi.  Mabinogi does have the advantage of having the most player skill dependant combat system of any MMO I know of: Give a veteran a new character and a few hours to gather basic skills/materials and then watch as they waltz through dungeons in their underwear new players with the best store bought equipment can't handle .  Crafting is good by most MMO standards, although doesn't really compare to Eve of course.

For upcoming games, Earthrise may be worth a look.  I've heard it described as "EVE on the ground" more than a few times, but I'm not familiar enough with it to back up that description.
