There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

While it's true, and relevant, to say that this is no big deal, that it's something that happens in every genre, well, if someone had to make a post about it, it's obviously not as acceptable as we'd like to believe.

I have to agree - to an extent.

Ever since WoW, and the massive influx of minimal IQ morons that came with it, we're seeing alot more whining nowadays. Worse than the WoW fans, though, are the sandbox vets. Because it seems like all new games being developed are "WoW clones", or close enough to "WoW clones", they become discouraged and grumpy. I can understand their position, but I say, "If you don't like it, leave. We'll let you know when a company makes a real sandbox. Until then, let us themepark fans have our fun."

And whaddya know. Some sandbox games are being produced anyways.

I don't think we're killing the genre or anything. I think part of the problem comes with developers. However, they cannot win. If they give too little information, we'll call them shady and secretive. If they give too much, we'll nitpick and tear apart every detail and create our own bullshit assumptions and predictions, mostly negative.

Like others have said, this happens with every form of entertainment. But there seems to be a trend in the MMO genre that is particularly unpopular with the vets (the WoW-clone/themepark era), and they're quite vocal. Maybe that's what you are referring to. It's like finding a nice house, living in it for a few years, making memories in it, and then having that house blown apart and replaced by an amusement park. I think we can understand their pain.

Those who just make uneducated, dumb, negative assumptions or predictions should be ignored.

Sorry but the OP is way off base. We are killing it? I think developers who over hype their game and then release a unfinished game our fault? Is it our fault there is no creativity no more just cookie cutter MMO's out there? In a time when people are losing their jobs and homes you better deliver what you promise. The problem is developers seem to think building off already proven ideas is where it is at.  Companies are too scared to take risks and try different things out there. This is much like Hollywoood's problem of just doing relaunches of old material. This is the same thing happening in the MMO industry.

Nonsense.  Developers who over hype their game and then deliver smoking piles of  pooh are the reason for player negativity that brings the game down, not the other way around.

It's easy to blame the devs, but look at Darkfall. Darkfall never went into any details - the devs kept selling their game as the best thing since sliced bread, that's true, but how many of us actually saw any of that hype? Compared to a bigger company hyping their game, it's nothing much.

What hyped the game was the players. You can't deny that. They saw the features list and they freaked out, claiming the next great sandbox MMO with full-loot PvP and everything in it that the UO vets could ever want. Well, they set themselves up for disappointment.

Devs are partly responsible, but players are always more at fault for unrealistic expectations.

Right, it's always the consumer's fault the product is bad.

Yes lets take a look at the steaming pile of dogcrap called Darkfall. Why do you think it failed? because people were expecting a working game based on what the developers have laid out? No sorry the game failed because the company once again rushed a game that was not finished. You are never going to make everyone happy. If you truly enjoy the game do yourself a favor and dont read the forums. All forums are breeding ground for negativity and measing of E peens nothing more.

Companies that continue to rush a product all head down the same path and its not a theory. The fact remains it is a proven formula to loss. You can point the finger all day but it all comes down to the people making the game. Darkfall just the way the were  selling their product was so ass backwards.

So its my fault that Mark Jacobs is no longer at Mythic? So its my fault Brad McQuaid no longer runs Vanguard? So its my fault that The Matrix was a huge turd and shut down? So its my fault Darkfall cant pull its own head of its ass?

I think the proof is that were the product any good, no one would be here being negative. We'd all be playing.
