Everquest. But let me clarify something I consider important. I propose that EQ1, out of the gate in the first few months, provided an experience for people that has never been matched by anything. It had a lot of bugs, frustrations, etc., etc. and WoW and some others (Lotro) have tons more polish. But they haven't provided that early experience when a gamer stepped into it (LOL) and experienced 3d mmo for the first time - and with a combination of features that were breathtaking at the time. It had just enough with its launch timing that many gamers had an indelible epiphany about what gaming could be. The player to player interaction and the harshness of the enviroment (death penalty, travel, etc.) had a lot to do with it. It was king by numbers in the US and by experience but also by a unique experience that people had with it. Ten years later how many people remember the details of their first days in a game so vividly? The game that is new enough, and gives the lucky combination of features, to provide that experience again...that is what one hopes for, but it is doubtful. Its really tough.
