Are you tired of Medieval Fantasy MMORPGs?

I'm just tired of poorly-done stereotypical fantasy MMORPGs. Elves and Dwarves are not, by far, the only two races in Western folklore besides Humans. There are thousands to choose from, but everyone wants pointy ears for some reason. I actually wouldn't mind seeing a Fantasy MMO without humans at all, and just purely twisted races. That said, I wouldn't mind other settings as long as everything fit. Jumpgate: Evolution looks good to me, and so does SW:ToR. We shall see. With the way the last few MMOs have gone for me (Tabula Rasa, Warhammer, Age of Conan...) I might be sticking to SRPGs for a while as Dragon Age: Origins by BioWare is coming up in the fall with a true in-depth glorification of the single-player experience. Starcraft II is still coming up as well, and I love me some RTS. Between those two and my current habit of TF2, I might have my game fixes. If a company wants my MMO dollars, they will definitely need to think beyond a re-skinning of a stereotypical MMO. Preferably with a big, open world and lots of player interaction. :) Yes, I am an English Major. |

The Elves and Dwarves we see are all variations on a LotR theme. You can get some genuinely different races as characters in MMO’s. Those in AC2 and AO spring to mind. |

I am a little bit tired of the same races( -elf- -dwarf- -human- -orge / orc-), the overly big Asian weapons and magic 'spells'. It's all the same ><....stop it....please. We don't need more games like that, we only need good games. |

I'm personally sick of these oriental style mmorpgs.
Fantasy has been beaten to death too though. Dwarf, Elf and Orc have been beaten to death. Stick to Aelfborn, Irekei, Nephelim, and Aracoix and you have some interesting play.
Why don't more games have Centaurs? |

That's what I love so much about Guild Wars lore. They have very different races. Atleast none I've seen in other games. Human So I voted no, I'm not tired of traditional fantasy MMOs. |

Nope, I love fantasy, as they've yet to do a really good Sci-Fi MMO! Yet there aren't that many great Fantasy ones either! |

I want to make a MMO that includes Satyrs and Minataurs (not panzy Satyrs or some cheap Minataur look-a-like cow thing). Yeah it would have Elves and Dwarves just because they are hugely popular (and humans). But with Negah, Draconic, Satyr, Minataur, Golem, and some others on the original list that I forgot, the 3 boring ones would probably be overwhelmed. |

I'm not tired of medieval fantasy, in fact I think we need more, and that is because nobody has as of yet done a truly enthralling fantasy-based MMO. Fantasy used to be a platform the amazing roleplay, great character development and the ability to do anything you want. Nowadays as long as you have a sword or can shoot magic fireballs out your ass you're in a fantasy game. Hate to break it to everyone but yea, we need more GOOD medieval fantasy... For the Templars... |

I'm not tired of fantasy. I like fantasy games. The problem with most of them to me is that they don't go far enough. Most of the time you get European or Asian folklore with a bit of magic thrown in. Mention a war between some gods, and big baddie returning to curse the earth or a prophecy that must be fulfilled. After that is the same old get sword and hack, get staff and spell hose, get herbs and make potions. What would really make me happy is a fantasy world that isn't based on Human mythology. something that was created completely out of someone's imagination and not just a rehash of the Brothers Grimm. Isn't there more to fantasy than elves, orcs and other classic humanoid races? Can someone come up with melee weapons that aren't swords? I just want the fantasy to be more fantastic and not and exploration of Germanic and central Asian myths. Hope is not a strategy |

Originally posted by Leethe Why waste the time coming up with different races? I could, and have, but why? People buy Legolas look-a-likes. They devour the keebler chip's delux elves, and the stout dwarf with the really big axe? Pure gimme! So why on god's green earth would anyone waste time inventing new races outside of mythology (which is really hard, believe me) when they can just swipe things right out of mythology, stick it in a game, and say "hey look! our elves have blue skin, really LONG ears, and glowie eyes!"? It's what people buy. It's why elephants are being hunted and going extinct. Likewise for whales, rhinos, and a slew of other animals with some precious item on their carcass. Think anyone would run out with a big rifle and kill an elephant and jump it's tusks off if it wouldn't give them money? There aren't THAT many big game hunters who do it purely for sport (and none would risk their lives for an elephant for food). Same reasoning applies to the lack of sci-fi MMOs. Notice how damn near all of them are based on concepts we are familiar with? Star Wars, Star Trek, so-on and so-fourth? Very few things are based on imagination and those that are tend to reflect a boring generic setting (Planetside, it was basically 3 bands of humans battling eachother on a planet, and Tabula Rasa was just human vs aliens). |

Yes... and No. I'm tired of the rehashing of high fantasy, elves, dwarves, halflings, gnomes... returning demi-gods who can destroy worlds but get killed by 10 people halfheartedly progressing through their stronghold as if they were a plushy army...
I'm tired of taking Tolkien's world and creating illegitimate children with it's bucktoothed half sister from yokel country. I'd also not be tired if developers actually made something new and fresh within the genre (create new mythos or even base it on indian or other lesser used legends and myths /gods and godesses etc.) I'd also not be tired if developers stepped away from High Fantasy for awhile and created some dark or even low fantasy simply because they feel very different. |

Mediveal fantasy ? I cant be tired of those, because I dont play them. Games like Gothic just makes me go annoyed a hundreds times over. I dont want fantasy to be like mediveal times, for the introduction of magic would obviously change the world radically from how it was in mediveal ages. Also, fantasy elements just look completely out of place in a mediveal world. So give me back classic fantasy with elves and dragons and fantastic environments. |

Yes, sick and tired. Need some good sci-fi MMO now. |

I'm not tired of the theme I'm tired of generic worlds with bad gameplay mechanics. |

I'd love to see a more mundane approach where anything supernatural was equally rare and terrifying in a medieval setting. A well-done Dark Heresy (warhammer 40k) mmo would be nice too as long as it wasn't the same warhammer crap with a facelift. Also on my wish list is a good cyberpunk type mmo. Having said all that, I'm definitely looking forward to Champions Online, Fallen Earth, and SWTOR. |

The question is kinda like asking if your tried of spaceships in scifi. Noway. Also all this is entertainment not a life. If you "get tried" your not doing something right. |

I am very tired of the psuedo-medieval Tolkien and Dungeons & Dragons-derived clones of generic medieval fantasy, not the timeperiod itself. I would love to see (just as some quick examples) a true high medieval fantasy game based on Arthurian legend, a gritty realism driven low-magic dark ages game or a Crusader/Outremer game set in the Holy Lands. |

I have seen alot of responses that support the fact that people are tired of fantasy MMORPGS but I think what people are actually tired of is shitty fantasy mmorpgs, I'm pretty sure that if a good one comes along all of those who said they're sick of it will play, it all comes down to the fact that aren't enough good mmorpgs because of the difficulty creating a game that is good in this genre....... just my 2 cents.. World of Warcraft is a proof that MMORPG quality should affect schedule/budget and not the other way around. |

Originally posted by Dynamo112 What about the Tengu, Kappa, etc. ? They're all based on real myhtology (as real as mythes can be). Anyway, I would also like to see some fresh fantasy races. DF had new races, if you were able to buy it... You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up. |

I am tierd, but no one wants to take on anything but a "The world is doomed" game or one sided space combat. Somone needs t start thinking outside of the box again. Take a look at AO, they have moved from one side of the sci fi coin to the other. if only they would upg the graphics and combat engine then even more people would come back. |

I would really love to see a fantasy MMO based on native north and south american mythology. An MMO based around the Hopi or Navajo people's mythos would be a breath of fresh air to me. I just want to see another culture have a crack at the fiction whip when it comes to games. There are so many pre-colonisation stories that could be explored and expanded upon. Hope is not a strategy |
