For me, yes, it was Vanguard. From what they promised (the hype), to what they delivered (the fail). The whole thing was just a gigantic let down.
DDO was the second largest letdown for me. ________________________________ Everything born must die. All that is, will come to ruin. This is the essence of Doom. So sayeth the Doomsayer. |

Everquest 2 really. A chance to build on the first and improve the 'crap' parts of the original(ie melee classes) - instead the result was throw the whole game out the window, starting new with vague similiarities. I know how AC fans must feel, though AC2 could actually have been good. |

NC cancelling Tabula Rasa when it could of been fixed in my opinion. It had a dedicated group of players that liked that game, and should of put more of an effort in fixing the game. |

Personally, it was Warhammer. What a stinker that turned out to be. It was the perfect example of Big Mouth(tm) PR then the game was a fucking disaster. Still is. It's like gaming in mud, RvR is retarded, every class is so generic and nerfed to shit it doesn't matter what you play. Of course, it's more complex than that but that's basically it. A lot of the disappointment for me though was the let down in the game because it was Warhammer, I love the Warhammer world. The lore is awesome. It's gritty and dark and evil. The game is NONE of those things. Watered down like everything else.
Industry-wise, I'd say Vanguard was the biggest shocker and the poster child for NOT building your game listening to forum trolls and the so called "hardcore" forum members. It also showed something I already knew, the Brad McQuaid was not a God of MMOs but just a shmuck that just happened to have ONE good idea once and be in the right place at the right time. |

I'd have to say Vanguard. If only it had been given the time and work that it deserved. The game is fine now, but it's too little too late. First impressions are hard to overcome. |

LOL, SOE didn't cancel it. SOE didn't own it. SOE was the distributor and had boxes on the store shelf. It isn't SoE's fault that PE/P2 were shady and got caught trying to use one capital group to pay off another capital group and defaulting on loans. PE/P2 disappeared overnight when their scam got exposed. If you lived thru the adventure, you know the truth. Oh, back on topic, definately Age of Conan. They really had the community going and delivered about 1/8 of what was promised at launch. A close second would be DFO, then Vanguard.
Fear not fanbois, we are not trolls, let's take off your tin foil hat and learn what VAPORWARE is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware "Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product." |

Had my 3 earlier and completely forgot about Vanguard. Like a bad memory wiped from existence I never looked back after that mess of a MMO, hearing it's still alive and fine almost boggles the mind at this point. Fight my Brute Clicky!! |

I get the feeling that most posters here consider biggest let downs as those that didn't allow them to move on from WoW. |

For me it have to be Aion, the videos of the game are better then the game.. i played on the Chiness OB,and the game is just boring, maybe its getting better on the higher lvls, but for me it was a let down. http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/8241/curseseal1yq.gif |

yeah Aion blows imo and AoC is just as bad |

Darkfall without a doubt.
*A lot* of promises with less than 30% of discussed features actually at release ( despite Tasos's claim of "100% feature complete"....that quote needs to go down as one of the lies of the century in gaming development. )

AoC and WAR, their boxes line the wall of shame alongside Vanguard. |

DDO because of the high expectation. |
|

WAR |

Age of Conan, definately. What made it worse was that the developers actually dared to lie to their customers agian and agian until the customers finally got fed up and left in flocks |

Weird thing is VG would go on my list of games that were the biggest pleasant surprise. ----- Everything that has a begining, has an end. |

How most current MMO communities focus primarily on solo play as well as PvP, and shy away from aspects that once made this genre great. I could take almost any game on the market and throw in an old-school UO or Ryzom community and would be content regardless of the games structure or status. Aside from this, the decision to scrap UO2 was my personal biggest let-down.

My biggest let downs... WAR was not a big disappontment - i did not expect much and did not get much - its a draw. Vanguard was disappointing yes, buggy in the beginning and empty when i tried it again. Tabula Rasa was very disappointing, expected more from Richard Garrison. but the biggest let down for me in mmorpg history was LOTRO. Not because it was a failure or is a bad game but because it is nothing special, while the LOTR books are special among books and the LOTR movies are special among fantasy movies.I probably expected too much from it, i was hoping for some kind of middle earth online but all i found was a kid-friendly "click here" to get experience quest grind with nice graphics and shallow game play. Thankfully i found a new home in an almost forgotten MMO. |

the NGE from swg. I mean come on, they get your hopes up with this awesome game, and then erase that game and make an entirely new and totally crappy game with the same name. |
