That's exactly right.  Blizzard has trademarked the word "Craft" and anyone attempting to use it in a title will be instantly imprisoned and tortured.  These guys don't play around.

Honestly, though, I think it sounds kind of lame.  Crimecraft just doesn't really roll off the tongue, plus it does sound like a cheesy knock off of Warcraft.  This doesn't reflect anything about the game itself, but it does sort of put me off a little.

If they did trademark it then why isn;' Blizzard suing for the use of the word "craft" ? I mean surely  they could use the extra cash for the next-gen mmo right ?

He was joking. Get a sense of humor.

I think ultimately the name is fine and will simply be abbreviated into the lexicon such as WoW, L2, WAR, PotBS, etc.  CC is easy enough to say.

CC! That's not much better, even the abbreviation will be lame. CC = Carbon Copy ;)

It's not.  It's called CrimeCraft.

Personally, I have great reservations about playing the game based off of the name alone.

Crime -- Oh, great, lets hype up criminal behavior, that's the kind of attention games need.

Craft -- Oh, great, lets pretend we're WoW (a game a lot of players are bored of) even though we have nothing to do with WoW.

The game itself could be awesome, but the name sounds like they're trying to skim off the worst parts of barren chat and give them a playground of ill-advised behavior to shoot eachothers brains out all day.

Back to the drawingboard...

... hmmm... maybe "Hammer... Age of Decking" might work.

If it wasn't a sandbox FFA-PvP with full loot it would be lame and epic fail...

WoW doesn't own the word craft, and it was used well before WoW was around. So to think that way is well just kind of stupid.

You're offended by a game marketed around crime? Where have you been for the past decade? GTA is one of the best selling series in the history of games, clearly people enjoy being able to do something they can't do in the real world just like the people who are interested in being in medieval times killing other players and creatures. Just because it's fantasy in a modern setting doesn't all of a sudden make it bad. Seriously get a grip on that part.

But overall the name is fairly weak, I think All Points Bulletin was a much better title choice for a crime game.

Regardless of what they may or may not be trying to ride the coat tails of, the name does leave much to be desired.   Putting craft on the end of a number of other descriptive words would make great game titles for a number of games, but this just ins't one of those cases.

Where have you been in the past decade?  Yes, GTA is popular, but if you were paying attention you'd know its criminal focus isn't there just for the sandbox effect.  Rockstar generates a lot of controversy, just to be provocative in the name of profit, and the entire game industry is hit by the backlash of it.

Besides, making a game about being a criminal is one thing, making a persistent-space online game about being a criminal is another level of magnitude.  No longer is this a fun little sandbox where you can see things through a criminal's eyes, it's a game about defining an online virtual identity of being a criminal and associating with other players who are doing the same.  The persistent-space online step makes it less a guilty toy and more a channel in which criminal behavior is imitated and conducted to others.

It's not even that "Craft" has been heavily associated with Blizzard titles (though it has and you're deluding yourself to think that wasn't one of the reasons they chose the name) it's just that it looks really bad sitting next to the word "Crime."  Now we've not only a game that's about definining an online virtual identity of being a criminal, we've a game that's about defining a virtual identity as a being that creates crime, like some kind of demented toymaker who profits from human sorrow.

So, overall, this whole "Crimecraft" name strikes me as ill-conceived along these lines.

Those who can't differentiate between reality and a virtual world should really not be playing videogames.

Do you actually read what you quote or do you just use Google and hope no one looks. Do you know why GTA is related to controversy? HOT COFFEE. Not Crime, do you know how many gang and mobster themed games are out there?

In my defined online virtual identity I use a sword.

Seriously though, you do need to look at the internet more. Do you know how many web based MMO's already exsist out there that basically do exactly what this game does. None of this is new.

He thought by having as much "slightly relevant" yellow text as possible in his post it would make him look smarter. Kind of like how people think putting everything you type makes you SOUND IMPORTANT AND THUS ALWAYS RIGHT!!!LAWLSAUCE1!

The name is horrible though. I have to say that. Sure in another language it would of been great sounding, but CrimeCraft...? Eh... I'm sure the company is allowed some liberties with translating to make sure it doesn't sound so... lazy. I'm not part of the crowd who thinks Craft is just a way to catch the attention of WoWers, but can you really blame them? It sounds so fake. At least with "WoW" it fits (granted Blizz used Craft in everything but a few games, and with the wild success of those games who could blame vogster if they did it on purpose).

have to admit though, that this:

www.joystiq.com/2009/06/03/wanted-for-breaking-the-law-vogsters-crimecraft/#thankYou

doesn't help the game. Now I wouldn't place my trusts in one site's review, but until I get in beta, this is the most I've heard about it in terms of actual gameplay.

Hot Coffee got a lot of attention but, if you actually looked at more than a couple of those google hits, you'd see a whole lot more reasons for Rockstar generating controversy than that.  Take Manhunt, for example.  There's not too many game development companies out there where over half the games they make have a "controversy" section in the Wikipedia.  Wake up and smell the hot coffee: yes, they do make highly controversal games, denying this point is flat out delusion.

Unfortunately many do.

It's threads like these that make me feel really good about the fact that people that care about frivilous and inconsiquential stuff won't be sharing the same server as me.  If the name matters that much to you, keep it to yourself and don't play the game. We don't want you there anyway. idiots...
