Blizzard has walked over a mine in China. They broke of the deal with The9, which is the company that handles the localized version of WoW in China and now The9 have sued Blizzard in the Chinese courts. According to Chinese media all WoW servers have been shut down for transfer of hardware to another company, but that is going to take a couple of weeks. But that?s only a small part of Blizzards problem. Servers going down for 3-4 weeks, making Blizzard loose many customers over to its rivals, especially the newly released Aion, which at the end of May reached a staggering 3,3 million subscribers only after 2 months of its release in China. Blizzard's other headache is that The9 is keeping its 5 million subscribers hostage until the matter is solved. No one really knows when that will happen. The9 and Blizzard are set to meet in Shanghai Pudong's Supreme Court on June 18th, 2009. If matters are not solved and things drags on there is a chance that Blizzard will pull out from China and consequently loose 5 million of its player base.

Aion with 3.3 million subscribers already, a potential 5 million Chinese WoW players will be looking for something to do, perfect time for NCsoft to give out 1 week free trials in China.

lol, Aion can potentially be a WoW killer. 3.3 million subscribers in 6 months and still growing at fast rate is ridiculous, no MMO has come even remotely close to that.

I hope Aion kills WoW, that'd be awesome!

I think WoW will be fine when they are done destroying Aion, Blizzard will release thier new MMO which they claim is in the works and renew themselves as the MMORPG juggernaut that they are, as most of us subscribe to the next game that catches our interests

Neither game will kill the other. They will both prosper and we'll happily live in peace and harmony.

I dont doubt blizzard will release a great polished game (their upcoming MMO) but i dont think it will have the impact WoW did mainly because of the fact that I doubt that the 10million people will just leave WoW over night to their new MMO and considering they have announced its a completely new franchise some ppl just really like the warcraft setting.

These threads are such a cliche!

Most of the buzz is the game is Starcraft Online, if it is it will do big numbers with the world wide following starcraft has.  And no game is going to kill WoW, even if they lose 50% of their subs,  they still would have 5-6 million.

Aion is going to be a good game, will not kill WoW but a decent amount of WOW players will give Aion a look.  If NCsoft West takes what they learned from L2, and fixes the BOT issue the game will be great, if the BOTS are not taken care for the NA/EURO release then this game will fail to live up to its potential and will be the next Conan or Warhammer with all those WoW players going back.

You don't GET IT! Aion has 3.5 million subs, when it hits North America, Eurpope, Japan, and Taiwan they'll have 5 million subscribers. If WoW looses half of their subs, I'm sure at least 1 million will come to Aion which means that WoW will only have 5 million and Aion will have 6 million.

My point exactly, WoW is good for beginners or people who just want to raid here and there, but nothing for the serious gamer.

While I'm posting I want to clear up a couple of things as I have been in contact with some EU guys that play on the Asian servers, ill be joining em this weekend btw ^^

- Aion is also a gear grind, don't think its any different from WoW there, in fact from what I have heard it may be more of a grind.

- Aion is on its 3rd content patch I believe while WoW is on its 2nd expansion, 1 content patch in, so its bound to have more depth atm not to say that wont change.

- Aion does ad flying combat, very nice idea btw, but it looses some very basic game-play elements like swimming and its char customization is more limited atm. I don't mean what your char looks like btw ^^ it rocks there.

- Aion is pulling alot of cross references to other games, especially WoW but that is bound to happen, whenever a new mp3 player or media player comes out its always judged by how well it does vs a Ipod, same concept, WoW is the benchmark atm and love it or hate it any MMORPG that comes out will be compared to it, there is nothing wrong with that, people expect the next big thing to be better, and in a genre where you can spend a very big chunk of your spare time you certainly should shop around.

The only way to know for sure which MMO will be on top this time next year is to wait and see, it may not be Aion or WoW it could be something completely new, only time will tell :)
