I am wondering about how many people here use Vista to play FFXI.  I have been playing FFXI since '03 and I've been having problems since day 1 with my new laptop (well... ok it is about 2 years old but still!).  After doing a lot of work with video drivers and computer crashes I finally got FFXI to stop having 10 FPS in normal areas (heavy traffic ones unplayable).

I'm not asking for help on how to fix this (cause I've managed to get it to work-ish for about a year and I frequent my PS2 and Xbox versions when I can) but I'm asking if anyone has had problems with Vista or if they avoid it entirely.  I'm really disappointed with the compatibility in my experiences...

What GPU and CPU do you have? Look that it don't suport intel GPU and multi core procesor(it use only one core, even with HT).

From what i seen there is no problem playing with vista, even if you use windower. It work in windows 7 too.

If you REALLY want to know why I am having problems it is nvidia's and my laptop provider's fault.

The driver for my computer isn't updated at all and nvidia only recently updated it so it could support FFXI on Vista (there were initial problems with multiple processors and such as stated above).  Unfortunately, the company I bought my laptop from doesn't update their display drivers AT ALL and nvidia doesn't update the specific driver I need unless the company requests it... so I was stuck modifying a pre-existing driver that worked with FFXI and forcing my computer to run on that.  This causes my computer to crash when doing anything else except FFXI... but it is for a good cause <(^_^)>

But I was just wondering if people just didn't use Vista or if there weren't any problems.

Soo you have a special GPU (meaby a M version?). You dont really need to have the lastest drivers, i used to play with a nvdia 6800 and using the 181.22 drivers i get more fps than the 182.08 one.

Alright I'll give you guys the full details incase anyone else has this problem since it appears Vista is not an issue for most!

My computer uses a Nvidia 8600 GT (laptop video card) 256MB Graphics Card.  It does not support or run FFXI very well with the normal driver.  In order to make it work I had to modify a driver from 165.7 version to include my model so that my computer thinks that it can run it.

Since it really doesn't support it and I'm basiclly tricking it into thinking it can... it causes problems.  Some include Firefox crashing my computer sometimes, newer games crashing fequently (such as The Sims 3), and other random problems.

I'm scared to update the graphics driver since I got this one working... but I might just update to see what happens :-P give my computer a break!

If you got an error after the update and you can't enter to windows (worst case) you can  press F8 while booting and start on safe mode, unistall the new driver and install the old one.

The only issue I've had with Vista 64bit is that I needed to use some tricks to get Vista to use 3rd party Xbox360 controller drivers, and after that they worked save the force feedback (which does seem to work in other games).  Actually, I found another set of 3rd party drivers that allows me to have force feedback (different from the XBCD ones I usually use), but they have an error that requires me to restart my computer in order to recognize the controller again in the event it gets disconnected.

I haven't had any issues with Vista and FFXI. The game runs great and I even editted the registry to increase the resolution on the textures. So i'm guessing it's more likely a hardware issue you are experiencing.

A friend of mine has a PC similar to my PC, but with Windows Vista as his OS, where as I have Windows XP.

For me, the game runs flawlessly maxed out (background res. 2048x2048, shadows on high etc). For some reason though, he struggles to run the game with shadows completely off, and the background res at 1024x1024. I think he went down to like 9 FPS in Southern SanD.

Every other game for him runs fine though. In fact, most games run better for him than they do me.

He has an 8800GT video card, an E8400 CPU @ 3.0GHz, 4GBs of RAM @ 600MHz. My PC has an 8800GTS 512 video card, an E6850 CPU @ 3.0GHz, 4GBs of RAM @ 800MHz.

Besides the speed of our RAM (which really doesn't affect the FPS too much), and our OSs, our PCs are really similar. So I would have to assume that his issue with FFXI and his PC mostly lies with his Vista OS.
