Hello all,

Thinking of trying EVE out, but have a quick question(for now)...Does EVE run on Vista? My "pure" gaming rig is an Athon x2 64 3.0 mhz, 4 gigs ram, Vista 32 bit, XFX 9800gt 512 meg PCI, but I do have an older machine that I use for vent and surfing that has an Athlon 3200 2.3 mhz, 2 gig ram, XP sp3 32 bit, GF 7800 512 meg. Which would be the better machine to give this a go on? Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm at work and couldn't search all the pages of posts.

Thanks

Either one of those will work.  The gaming rig will run it with higher graphic settings but EVE is designed to work well with specs quite a lot worse than your older one.  Regardless it shouldn't be difficult to simply transfer the game files to whichever rig you want since you can run the game without having to do any special sort of install.  You just need the game files.

Good luck with EVE!  I hope she treats you well.

Thanks for the replies and its good to know both rigs will run the game ok. I have a request in for a 21 day trial from one of the other posters here in the EVE forums, so when I receive an answer back, I'll try this out.

Will run no problem.. but why aren't you running 64-bit?  Your rig should be able to handle it, and if you ever decide to pop in some more RAM, you'll be ready for it.  Will squeeze just that little bit more performance out of it by running 64-bit.

EVE runs fine on Vista... in fact they did an entire rewrite of the core code to the client a while back specifically to get it completely compliant with VISTA.... tbh I think it runs a little better in vista than it does in XP ever since SP1 came out for Vista.

Rig came with the 32 bit Vista already installed.....the ram and Vid card I upgraded myself....just haven't had the money to go 64 bit Vista or XP...and with "Windows 7" on the horizon....want to wait to see the reports on that OS for gaming before I decide to upgrade to 64 bit. :)

EVE runs great on my gaming laptop which uses 32 bit Vista.

I run 3 accounts at the same time on occasion which can tax it a bit, but 2 accounts works great at all times, even in big fights.

I was really pissed off when I found out that most of my games would not run on the 64-bit Vista I bought. That was when I first upgraded.

But Eve was one of the few that would. I've never had a problem running Eve on Vista.

What games were you looking at tht wouldn't run on 64bit Vista?  I have being playing games on my machines since release of Vista x64 ultimate and only had 1 or 2 minor issues with games.  The biggest being EA games, they would install but never put an icon on my desktop or in my start menu, after I found the the exe file I just created my own icons and poof worked fine, no emulation no nothing.  I have played alot of games from CS:S, AC, LOTRO, CRYSIS...just to name a few oh and of course, Sims 2, C&C2.  Don't know where people run into problems with Vista, I have never had any issues with Vista at all.

I dont remember specifically...City of Heroes was one and I think Roller Coaster Tycoon and some other single player games. It was when Vista first came out. I bought the 64-bit version thinking it would be better, but it was actually much worse. At the time it performed worse and had far worse support.

Driver support was just awful. Even when I did get some of the games to work later, they still had wierd problems (the cursor would not appear in CoH for example, and I had to use a 3rd party program to set the resolution correctly because it kept defaulting to 800 x 600).  In hindsight I should have just gotten the 32-bit version.

But Eve always worked, and I didnt see a performance drop. I never had to mess with it.

As an issue with 64bit is for example PunkBuster.

I am a pretty big PC gamer and have never had an issue with x64.  Might just be some bad hardware configurations if you've had issues.  I have heard bad things about XP x64, but have heard nothing but good about Vista x64 when it comes to gaming.  SP1 fixed the majority of issues Vista had, and I find that I enjoy it better than XP, even after using XP since its release.

Now, I am running Windows 7 64-bit and have yet to run across a problem with it either.  In fact, it runs better than Vista so far.  Very pleased with Win 7, and would definitely reccomend an upgrade.  Even as only a release candidate, it is a really solid OS.  Can't wait for its official release.

Edit: Oh, lol.. you are referring to when it was released.  Then yeah, Vista was horrible.  But Vista now is nothing like Vista at release.  Vista is a very solid OS if your machine doesn't suck; and that's not saying you need a beast to run it.. just a solid rig and it will perform fine.

This, TBH

VISTA reeked.... sucked... was horrid... insert your favorite ephitet here.... when it originally released.  However, since SP1 it has been a rock solid OS and I highly recommend it to anyone who's buying a new PC before Windows 7 comes out.  Windows 7 seems to be slightly better but Vista is solid now as well.

The Vista you knew in 2007/ very early 2008 is not the Vista of today :)

Wow how time flies... has it really already been 2 years?

There was never a point in getting Vista 32bit imho, but alot of the preinstalled systems run Vista 32bit, which is dumb from the manufaturers.

With Vista 32bit you get most of the bad things and few of the good things from Vista.

Furthermore, even at release Vista was a solid OS, you just had to do alot of tweaking with it, and even now, an untweaked vista is not that great of a performer.

Corporations never implemented Vista, but that is not because it was not a stable OS, but because of too much work for little gain.

Lastly, the 64bit version of Vista is free if you have the 32bit version, you can just use the same serial number, so the only thing you need is a 64bit install DVD, not the actual license/serial number.

Thanks folks..you were right...DLed and played some last night on my Vista machine...solid 60fps and no lag from what I could tell...ran smooth as silk. Better than some other MMOs I'm still playing....now if I could just find Tahamars Outpost in Uitra to finish that quest........

One thing I remember that sucked about Vista...it had no driver support for my current network card. The only way I could get access to the internet was by buying a new card.

Indeed, Vista does a good job running Eve.

I've got Eve running on Vista 64. Rarely crashes and when it does, it only does it when I'm quiting the game.
