I never got to play this game when it first came out since my computer at the time couldn't run it. Now that I'm in a lull for MMOs and with news of FFXIV coming out one day, it may be time to finally take a look at FFXI.

It also helps that when I showed my girlfriend a video on Chocobo raising she was in full "Awww mode" and was interested as well.

Still looking over threads here but is there an actual trial to take advantage of? Or are we better off just buying the boxed version?

The full collection version, with wings of the goddess (black box), is only 14-16 bucks, and that gets you a 30day free trial.  If your interested, no reason not to.  It's currently holding my attention till Aion NA.

Ah excellent! Yeah am already downloading the trial (found that link after I posted my post) and am looking over the getting started sections and the nice guide at the top of this forum (yes, my girlfriend has her eyes on the dancer job).

Any suggestions on a decent server for population? I saw the one thread has a lot of people joining the Kujata server.

Yeah join Kujata, and FYI, you can't get Dancer until you get at least one job to lvl 30 to unlock it, and get over to Whitegate which is semi-medium length quest + you'll more than likely need a lvl 60+ friend to help you get it at lvl 30!

Dancer is WotG. You don't need to go to Whitegate. It's pretty easy as long as you have sneak and invisible.

Let me know if/when you join on Kujata.

You will still have 3-8hrs of patching to do regardless!  I have all the expansions installed and it took me almost 4 hrs!  Such is the patching process of FFXI.  Heck in the past it used to take overnight or multiple days for some ppl, this is nothing now!

Good luck!, FFXI is an intimidating game, not for the weak of heart, dont get discourage as you wander valkrum dune hopeless and at times, alone... and then it gets harder from there on! but this game is rewarding and if your willing to find them, they are great people in the game that will leave an impression on you for quite a while.

So I went to 10 different stores and could not find the game and cant use Direct 2 Drive because I'm in Canada. So I caved and ordered the game.

For now I am installing the trial and am patching currently. I think I will join the Kajuta server when it is done. If that is where all these new people are also going to go to. See yuh all soon :)

Are you sure? I got the key from their trial system yesterday. I DID have to get it resent though as the original key got caught up in my spam filters.

Yeah, am in Canada also and ended up finding a single copy at Walmart. Called all the EB Games and Microplay stores around and all the EB Games people kept saying it was discontinued (the box pack).

all you need to know is that its not a WASD game.

... uninstall.

Yes, I am that shallow.

oh and the even when you do move, the animation is so bad it looks like your floating because you take about 10 strides for every step.

Its like a very bad amiga game, even if you get a copy for free you dont even bother to format the disc and copy over it, you just throw it in the bin and wonder why any human exists that even bothers.  maybe they have some kind of mental block?

Obviously your bashing is backed up by... nothing. Perhaps the mental block is yours to keep, keep it away from people already installing the game. If there is one game out there that provides the possibility to really feel rewarded for a hard session's worth, it's this game. Everyone that I have ever known to bash this game doesn't get past level 10 because you don't solo much if at all after that. BTW OP if you want a game where most of it can be played with just you and your gf, you MIGHT be out of luck. I haven't played since CoP, so I'm not sure about the present situation, but the game is still heavily group based. Just an FYI

Just because your PC really sucks and can't run a 7 yr old MMO, doesn't mean it don't work.  The animations here are one of a kind and very fluid.  Oh and you can make this a WASD game if you give it more than 20sec, which you clearly didn't!

My guild and I are starting up on the Ifrit server, so if you want some guys to group with at the lower levels, give a shout out to Musco, Veteris, or Ocsum. This is for anyone reading this thread/to the op :) Most of us are just starting out.

Don't you love it when people just own themselves pretty much in the first few words?

You really should have said something before uninstalling so quickly.

First of all, I've never played the game with anything other than a gamepad. I mean, the game was originally designed with a PS2 controller in mind so naturally it's going to  be the choice control scheme when playing the game, even on a computer.

Secondly, about the animation being bad, I'm going to guess that you didn't try changing any of the settings on the "FFXI config" tool? The default graphic settings are set to the lowest resolution and admittedly look really terrible. I'd say that's probably why the movement looks so bad. Once you change the graphics settings it's like a whole other game.

Anyway, I don't even know why I bothered giving you any suggestions. Considering your last comment, you seem to have some predetermined bias against the game. If that's the case, using a term like "mental block" seems like an ironic and hypocritical statement.
