I love FF and I love PvP...one could only hope!

good question. As far as I know there are no details on PvP as of yet.

Hopefully not, as that only ruins the PvE experience and then you have constant tweaks and changes to balance all the classes based on the stupid PvP BS.  FFXI has done great for the past 7 years with the little PvP they have and it has never effected the PvE and I sure as hell hope it stays that way!

A BLM should damn well so way more damage than a WAR sword strike, and a RNG bow shot should hit with much better accuracy and dmg than a SAM with a bow!  Balancing classes so they're on equal footing is not required in PvE, screw PvP, as there are plenty of games already with it and look how great they're doing....yeah...heh!

I have to agree i dont want to play a Final Fantasy to go kill other players i want to play to join with friends and go kill some hard bosses. 

I agree with the poster above me.  As well as they are going to have to find that balance between the solo/group, casual/hardcore aspect of the game, they will have to find that balance between the PvP/PvE aspect of the game.  All of those abilities to choose it what it takes to make a good game in the MMORPG genre. Those, along with immersiveness, combat, and overall feel of the game will play a critical factor in the success of FFXIV, like all other MMO's.  I found the whole Ballista aspect of FFXI very flawed and stale.  I didn't feel like there was any real reason to do it, and hopefully they make some sort of more sweetening reward for being successful than simply some exp and a title "Rook Buster."

Personally I am not an MMO pvp fan, because I think its to slow. However I do hope it has pvp in it, but not a main role in the game. Something along the lines of how ffxi did it.

if it has PVP I hope it will be completely secondary with no class balancing.

When a Galka monk came on the battlefield it was a very scary experience......the only question was how many would he kill in a row....not weather he kills or not.

I Personaly Do Hope there will Be Pvp servers. And I hope that it fallows a few other MMO's and makes them Compleatly Diffrent Stats. No Pvp Fudgeing Up My Pve. Pvp has its place. Heck It dosent even gata be Pvp of Player Vs Player. It could be a race or something I dont honestly care. Just Don't let it screw up my PVE and ill be happy to Support PvP.

Thank you, deathtripp, for demonstrating another reason why I hope FFXIV will keep any PvP content to a limited, consensual format as they do in FFXI. Fewer people with attitudes like yours infesting the community and dragging it down.

FFXI's done great with the limited PvP it has in Brenner and Ballista. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

The Final Fantasy games are, by their nature, cooperative games. SE carried on that trend with FFXI, and hopefully they'll continue it with FFXIV.

There are plenty of PvP MMOs out there to play. I enjoy PvP myself and am playing Lineage 2 at the moment.. I love the open PvP environment, the sieges, the clan-wars, the politics and all that goes with it... but that's because Lineage 2 was built with PvP conflict in mind.

When I want PvP, I play a PvP MMO. I don't look for a PvE MMO and then complain that it doesn't have PvP. Likewise, when I want PvE, I play a PvE MMO... I don't go to a PvP MMO and then complain that it doesn't have enough PvE content.
 

It would be a great game without pvp, I enjoyed FFXI without ever trying their pvp system and FFXIV would do just fine without it. The community will just end up closer without the pvp "hardcores" whining about taking the nerf bat to classes they don't play.

I would much prefer fighting NPCs than players.  NPCs have many advatanges over PvP players.  They have better grammar, are less whiny, often better AI, often more mature and most importantly they do not constantly hop around like a child in desperate need of ritalin.

yea the whole nerf bat syndrome is what killed WoW for me.

If I were PVPing with a taru mage and got targeted by a Ranger surprised by a Ninja or any other potentially disastrous encounters with any form of damage I would expect to pop like an egg hitting concrete.

The other side of the coin is also viable, if I am a well geared Mage my top spells will be devastating.

Sometimes classes are Glass cannons to other classes, rock paper scissors. Something Blizzard lost somewhere along the way.

I enjoy PVP but if they have it it better be done right.....QQ better fall on deaf ears, or have completely separate stats for pvp

If it has PvP, they sure as hell better not have us playing on the same servers as Japanese players.

I agree that there should NOT be PvP... I mean I don't really care if there is but I do agree that it has been sucessfull without it and the community stays together. I am convinced that it has a better community at least in part because of it's lack of PvP. LotRO also has a decent community and not so much PvP.

I guess I've never really thought about it but there might in fact be a connection there. And I'd take a great community that isn't fighting with eachother over PvP any day.

Pretty much this. I don't mind arenas but I'd be disapointed if another game I'd consider cool has world PvP. That and I'm not sure how Square would handle it, usually if one is good at designing PvP they're not so great with written content and/or PvE and the same goes for heavy story and PvE driven games.

I hope there's some in arenas and such but not everywhere. I have a feeling after Aion I'll want a big break ;P

LOTRO has a pretty decent PvP fan base. The option is there for players who want to PvP even if it lacks content, but there are many players who basically only PvP in LOTRO. That and their great community is... greatly exaggerated as I'm currently playing LOTRO and don't see much of a difference.

That said, communities are no better in PvE focused games. Hardcore PvP MMOs have a much different community from any other kind of MMO, but their subscriptions are so small that they really aren't fair to compare.

PvP via minigames maybe? There's a decent history of it in the newer FF games... we have Triple Triad,  Chocobo/vehicle racing, Blitzball among others.

I wasn't too fond of these overall, but the cards you could win in Triple Triad had a kind of usefulness that I think would translate well to an mmorpg.

I love PvP but cmon I hate when people try to push a game type that doesn't belong in another MMO. You can CHOOSE to play many of the other games that offer PvP. I don't even like FF w/e number but I know it is for PvE and its pvp is trivial at best.

And by attitude by yours Im sure he meant people who take the game too seriously and end up either crying for a nerf when they encounter a better player or constantly bloat about how good they are.

Your "attitude" that I refer to is how you presumptively and arrogantly regard anyone who doesn't like PvP as "whiney anti-pvp carebears". It's an ignorant, closed-minded attitude and, yes, I'm calling you out on it.

Had you simply said "I hope they have PvP because I enjoy competing against other players and testing my skills to see how well my character performs", I'd have had no gripes. I still wouldn't agree with PvP in FFXIV being a good idea necessarily.. But at least you'd have voiced your opinion in a reasonable manner, worthy of serious discussion.

But the way you came across and the attitude you displayed, quite frankly, sucks. I would much prefer it not being present in the FFXIV community. I can't see how it would do any good for it. That's my point-of-view. If you don't like that.. then that's *your* problem.

Like I said.. I love PvP. But I love PvP in a MMO designed for it. I don't believe every MMO out there needs to have PvP to be viable, nor do I believe it necessarily makes them a "better game" for having it. In my experience, a MMO that tries to satisfy both camps typically never really satisfies either. The reasons and examples are myriad.

As for you wanting to test your skill against other players and so on... To put it bluntly.. No matter how much you might "want to" do that... if FFXIV doesn't facilitate it in the form of a PvP system... then it's *you* who will have to deal with it. I'll be enjoying the game's PvE-focused content.




 

I hope there is personally but if they don't have it then that's cool to I guess.  I'd rather have a big budget FF online fighting game.  Like Dissidia but, online and on all platforms.  I don't really care when it comes to MMORPGs.

Actually.. If they do something like that... something analagous to the Ettenmoors in LoTRO, where PvP is separate from the PvE content, then I would support that - assuming the balance for PvP didn't interfere with PvE, and vice-versa.

It works in LoTRO because the Creeps are restricted to the PvMP areas, so balancing the "Freeps" against them is easier, because it doesn't spill over into the PvE areas of the game (hopefully that makes sense :-p).
