http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/insane-apb-character-customization/319854 Put this in TOR setting, change the car cuztomization to some ship customization and it's character creation love. ![]() Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

If everything is going wrong and all the sunden something go well, then something must be wrong... |
that char cust is total win. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

The problem with that is the more data it requires to represent a character the more load lag you get because it has to be communicated to your client before it can be displayed. "Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice." ~Greys Law |

@zymurgeist After all the years you spent on the potbs forums, are even playing the game atm? |

That game is an ACTION MMO 3rd Person Shooter Racing game. Think Grand Theft Auto+Need For Speed with Law Ennforcers VS Criminals. It's called APB - they're making it work. ![]() Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Because I hate what humanity does with this one.

Great vid, cheers for the link I did find it weird that Paul Barnett from WAR was doing the commentary though. Is he freelancing? |

TOR is supposed to be very cinematic. I think taking the facial cuztomization options at the LEAST would be a good idea... The video is from an MMO called APB. It's an ACTION game set in a large city - imagine GTA+Need For Speed. Basically a Cops vs Criminals game with 3rd person shoot outs [totally twitch based], car chases and explosions... Imagine how IMMERSED you would become just with that character, how connected you would feel. To me, a character in a video game is just that... but NOT in an MMORPG, and especially not in a BioWare MMORPG where my decisions matter. I really like to feel for the character and connect... and visual immersion IS important to me, even if not as important as the story itself. Everything in TOR is of such high production value, it would just be a shame if the character creation weren't... Also, you could always scale back the graphical quality. With something like this, people could scale down to a level where it still looks good, just doesn't look 'amazing.' With the current look, it almost seems like it just looks 'OKAY' for people with lower end computers, and with higher end computers. I really wonder how much I for instance will be able to 'scale up' graphics... I know TOR won't have character creation this indepth, with realistic model shapes that look more like the cinematic trailer but... it would be amazing. Like I said above, with such high production values for everything in this game, it'd be a lil bit of a shame if character creation was a low end. It's your character afterall - something you will look at and live with for as long as you play... both in gameplay and every single time you interact with an NPC and a cinematic event happens... ![]() Why do I write, create, fantasize, dream and daydream about other worlds? Dumb. The more customization options you give, the more server resources are taking up. This is a game advertised as being playable on low-end computers. APB won't be.

From what I have seen of APB it looks amazing. I can't wait to play it.
I think all mmo's would benefit from a robost character creator. Atleast for me, it makes a big difference in terms of game satisfaction if I love/hate the appearance of my character. So far in mmo's, my favorite character creator was SWG, but COH was also amazing. APB, if it releases with its character creator intact, would be awesome. |

It's the character customization phase of the game. It's not like the model's attributes are changing while you are playing the game. Once the model is "baked", its like any other character model in any other game. Also server resources don't affect the client performance. Two different animals. For example, in Second Life, all server resources have to be downloaded on the fly because all content is user created. The client can't anticipate what will be in a sim when it's accessed. Does the client slow down? No, it runs along just fine until the user receives all the object data from the server. The game will be playable on low-end computers, but may not respond well on slower internet connections, which would be the bigger issue in this case. |

Let us at least hope that some weight will be put into character customization since it is one of those things i really love about any game. I want to look unique and i want to look the way i like and not being restricted to eight different facial settings like in WoW. |
