More than likely they decided to pull it because of the great reviews they received from the trailer. Any gameplay footage could have been criticuzed so they probably decided to ride the high while they could and release more developed game footage later. That's my opinion anyway.

In theory that sounds great, but that was a gamble that didn't pay off. The good news is people will get over it.

I think if it truely was the case, it did pay off. So a few whiners (Yes i was disapointed ... then I started doing something else ... big deal.) complain about not seeing footage, like you said "they will get over it". But if they had shown the game footage it could be disected and the game ripped on fairly quickly with many many people forming opinions early on what the game may or may not be. I think that would have been alot worse.

As it stands most people who have been following the game will continue to follow. For those that weren't and were turned on by the trailer, they will also be watching still. Would seem like an excellent move. However it isn't something that they could continually do. Missing on this shouldn't hurt them in the least. However if it became constant, it would indeed hurt them.

Marketing is marketing, executives are executives.  It doesn't seem all that out of place to hold back on everything you have, if for no other reason than to spread it out a bit.

There is a lot of fan service being paid to this game today.  Unfortunately there are months if not years ahead where they need to continue to entice us with content.  We continue to leach the tiniest of details out of the material we are given and the speculation game keeps conversations running among those who enjoy that.

Really, I don't see anything unreasonable in what they are doing.  Hell, even if it was SoE I still wouldn't find it unreasonable.  They are not trying to humor the fans, they are trying to put out the best game they know how, and there is a lot of know how in that group.  They are being responsible.  I can appreciate that.

After all, it will all come to light soon enough anyway.  I am in no rush.

For the impatient ... embrace your anger ... feel it flow ... it is the path to the dark side ... er somethin'

Heh of course people will get over it...most don't give a damn. They only care about the game and if they enjoy it. Not about the mystical communication between the developers and the public months...if not a year or more before it is even released.

Exactly.  People need to get a grip and relax.  TBH I'm surprised they're far enough along to even show footage to press behind closed doors at this point.  Most other MMO's are a LOT further behind in their development this early on.

Hey everyone, we know there has been a lot of talk about watching The Old Republic Demo that is being shown during the E3 Press Event. Currently, we are only showing this behind closed doors.

It reminded me how SoE managed SWG players, I wished we where past that behavior. I do hope it'll be better next time.

Oh dear god, calm down and stop freaking out. This is getting out of hand because people like you are so overreacting to it that it makes me want to smack the stupid behavior from you.

What do you want them to do exactly? The same thing they did to KOTOR2? You do remember what happened there, don't you? They were forced to release before it was ready.

I'd rather have information that is actually ready, than a repeat of KOTOR2.

Get over it already.

KOTOR2 was an Obsidian Entertainment project and published by LucasArts. So there is no comparison there. Pick another game :)

I guess I look at it a bit different.

What I care about as a gamer is a dialogue.  Though that dialogue is one-sided, I prefer what Bioware is doing over say, Blizzard -- where you get game footage, and don't hear anything about the game for six months.  Or, where they claim a game is coming out soon, only to wait two years for it to be released.

In SWTOR, every Friday there is some new tidbit.  I think Bioware is very conscious of this.  Blizzard likes the whett the appetite of its players, but then blatantly disregard them for months at a time.  Bioware, at the very least, tries to be far more inclusive.  If they didn't show something to the public, it's probably because -- as people have said -- certain individuals will latch on to something, which may not be there in final release.

What they seem to be certainly sure of is the story, the history, and what elements they want to include.  This is another thing I enjoy watching, because at least I know the game will be somewhat grounded in the world they create.  Whereas, in something like CoH, where they added an entirely new element that didn't exactly gel -- or WoW, where they invent things that don't even make sense, so it can support what they want to do.

Or Mythic, where they claim something about the world, only to realize once you play, it's not there.

You have to figure all that out beforehand, so it's a cohesive environment.  So, for me, all of it I enjoy watching.  Gameplay footage is just one element, albeit an important one.

There are a few questions I'd have to ask before jumping to conclusions on an issue like this. Number one being who is it that is in control of marketing and the advertisement of the game, Is it Bioware, EA or LA ?  Also community managers could have been just as in the dark about exactly where they were setting up shop for all I personally know. I do however think I'm seeing a few posters here overreacting.

There's plenty to read up on from e3 that sheds  light on some regularly asked questions. Number one ofc is, is it really a full fledged MMO?  I'd say yes at this point. Will it play like the average MMO? Not exactly, but in some form. Will it be solo heavy?...  I'm pretty sure all of this is answered at this point.

I don't think it has anything to do with Sean.  I think it was bad communication between Bioware and Lucas Arts.  I spoke with a few people at Lucas Arts (they ran the demo as well, not bioware people), and none of them knew of the controversy on forums about "no in game footage", or that it was even occuring.  They seriously looked surprised.  It was brutal to even get into the media demo (and that is with a E3 Media Pass!)  Everyone was very nice at LA, but they didn't have a clue about the unrest on the game's forums.  In fact, I told them Sean was doing a pretty good job with all the unrest in the forums.

I find it amusing how people get pissed off.
The demo they showed will be available publicly sooner or later, why can't you wait a bit more? It's not like you'll play the game any faster if you whine.

The game is already OVER hyped.. Loot at the ratings peoples..   I find it more then coincendental that the new "trailer" is released with all it's wonderful cinimatics for people to drool and enjoy, and when people get a change to see the "real' gameplay footage, it's blacked out...... COUGH COUGH..

Bioware knew exactly what they were doing and why.. I faily to see how "showing" actual game footage would be over hyping anything.. UNLESS you are fearful that the footage might actually turn people off or away..   BP, JGE Champions Online all have released actual footage with possitive results, yet Bioware does their behind closed doors?   I'm sorry, that was a HUGE mistake in my eyes and makes me more cautious of the game..   Remember, alot of SWG (SOE) employees walked across town to take a job at Bioware..

Anyone who manages their schedule around a game event needs to take a hard look at his or her priorities.

Actually what a lot of fans did is no different then what fans of anything do, or even the press for that mater, most just did it from home instead of at the event itself.

Funny how any other hobby is ok but suddenly if it's about video games it's sad and we need to adjust our priorities.

Meh. Everyone's so sensitive. I'd be the first to defend people's gaming hobby, but any hobby is just a hobby. No reason to get so miffed over some website event. The game won't be out for a good long while, there's plenty of time to learn all about the gameplay - no need to arrange your life around Gamespot.

First of all it's a game, so relax.

Secondly what is with this growing trend of players of MMOs that feel they are owed anything ever? They will release footage when they are ready, they will release more details when they are ready. They will sell the game when they are ready. They don't owe you any footage or details and to keep thinking that way you're only setting yourself up for a lifetime of disappointments.

What are you people talking about?

Of course they owe us something.

We're the people pimping, pitching, projecting and publicising their game for them FOR FREE across a thousand different game forums.

Our enthusiasm and eagerness for them to succeed is worth literally tens of millions of dollars to them.;

Car manufacturers, washing machine makers, chip manufacturers would kill to have the kind of support for their products and their company that we are giving TOR and Bioware.

So, we were told there would be game footage at E3. We waited and we looked forward to this. Then we were told that it would be shown to journalists but not to us.

People are disappointed and even understandably angry.

An explanation would cost Bioware precisely nothing at all. An apology might even win them some friends.

OK?

OP is funny. People really rescheduled their day to see a game interview?.........I love me some video games....but I figured I'd just hear everything online...here for example....at my own pace. Right now ...I even have a lot of time to kill...(economy locked into a part time job...so I decided to go back to school in Aug.).....and I've been playing video games  since the mid-seventies..(collected comics and PnPRPGed until early this decade)...and still never thought to re-arrange my entire day around a game that I  AM  very excited to  have in my old, grubby, lazy hands.

correction: I have...once I had purchased a game.....called out sick to play. That was over 20 years ago though....I think it was The Legend of Zelda on NES....lol.

Okay seriously. Anyone else who starts a thread with SOE or SWG should be taken out and shot. People need to learn how to exercise a little patience. You'll get to see the demo soon enough and then you can spend the next few weeks complaining about what's wrong with it and how the game will be a total failure. Hell why even bother? Just post right now what's wrong with it. It isn't like some of you guys ever needed any evidence to prove your boisterous claims or predictions.

I would love to see the great publicity you have done for Bioware. By all means, show me the posters, commercials or other means and explain how you are "owed" something. And NO, blabbing about it over the internet doesn't count. That just means you're a gossiper, not a publicist.

Initially I would not go as far as you but honestly you are right, many companies would kill just to have the insane amount of free advertisement MMO gets. (edit: I'm not sure they owe us more than delivering a nice and fun game though)

The funny thing is most of the MMO studios don't know how to manage their customer’s base so, it too often, backfires.

Now to the people saying I'm exaggerating, please note that I did not say BioWare = = SoE and there was a question mark at the end of my sentence.

LoL comparing BioWare to SOE is like comparing a small Fiat to the latest Ferrari ... Do some reading about BioWare it might help you in the future when you make more posts about them. And second I agree with us not having so much info about it yet but it will come dont worry and relax.
