So far I have to say out of the games out that have a movie to go with them I see this becoming a trend in the MMO world. So far The matrix was not done very well at all it is a averge game at best.  Star wars SWG started off strong and really failed at the end. LOTR is a good game but when it first came out it was not the best.

We have Another star wars game coming out looks like it will be great however I thought the same with SWG and hope Bioware really comes through.  There was also some talk this year about a Harry Potter MMO not sure if thats true or not but sounds like if it happens it may be done good.....

Star Trek is coming out and the screenshots look good but who knows... Star Trek has let me down in the past with thier games. Seems to me that MMO's that are based on movies or at least has a movie to go with them does not seem to do to well.  Think Designers need something new to go off from..... Cartoons in my opnion would not be a good second choice.

What do you guys think MMO's should come from or based on??

Well, first off I think LOTRO is more based on the Books than the movie.  There are many good Book series that could be used.  What am I thinking, tho, this generation doesn't read anything if they can watch a movie or TV instead.

Well, many of those IPs have actually much more content behind them other than just the movies, so I can't really tell for sure, though I don't really think that there is one general rule for the success of MMOs that are based on movies.

It is interesting sometimes to borrow pre-existing IPs, and it is easier to gather more players that way, since many of them probably already had some contact with the game environment somewhere before. Also I find it a good way to have people understand better the lore and the whole content of the game, as sometimes developers don't even care about the story and/or players don't bother getting to know it well.

When LOTR first came out it seemed more based on the movies then the books. I would agree there are some awsome book series out there that would make for a great MMO.

Just seems to me if a game came out based on Books like Damien the series only a handful of people would know it was a book series.  If any books were to be made into series i am sure they would find something lame and popular like anne rice Vampire chronicles to make a MMO about....  I love Horror games but Not a huge Market for Horror MMO's

I read a blog that suggested the works of Philip Dick... the movie from one of his stories would be ok i think - Bladerunner.  It also doesn't have to be books - fiction, history would work.  The Napoleonic Era would be a good basis,  in my opinion.  Also Graphic Novels work well with movies, so how about Sin City - the game?  lol

I could see Sin City being made a MMO.  There seems to be some Historic games out there however most of em are based around pirates and none of them live up to the fun of being a pirate really.  I think if they wanted to make a Pirate game then it should have no Rules cause pirates didnt have any.. However the games I have played Bounty Bay/Voyage Century come close problem is they are a Item mall type game and I dislike those types of MMO's mainly cause a lawer Vs someone who works at burger king is un fair In my opnion.

I think a MMO based on the American Rev or Cival War would be fun to play.... How ever most war MMO's I ever played were about WW2 and none of them did the war justice.

 Don't forget AoC lol...

I think a big problem is that they have a lot to live up to with really popular IP's.

I started a thread about thoughts on an Underworld MMO... I believe that could make an interesting MMO.

I don't really have a problem with games based on Established IPs, but they do tend to come with constraints that don't affect other games.  The existence of canon limits the type of content that can exist in your game.  And you have to meet customer expectations, instead of getting the benefit of establishing expectations by providing something entirely new.

IMO mmo's based on established and popular IP's are ultimately too limiting for long term enjoyablilty for me.

I agree mostly but I am seeing more and more companys makeing games based off either classic video games or Movies/Cartoons.   DBO or Dragon Ball Online is based off a cartoon and if it is anything like the live action movie that came out I will make sure not to even try the free trial.

I am going to use the Hero Engine to do it based off a Sci-FI/Horror element There is not many MMO's based on such a thing and so much can be done with it.  I dont see my self makeing a Fantasy style game since there is already a gizlion of em already and 80% of em were stolen ideas from old D@D Book games.

Reason I started this topic anyways was to get some ideas on what the people thought and if a orginal idea would make it in the MMO world or not.... Sounds to me so far most agree that people seem to buy and play games that were from another IP or some form of other media..

People like an idea they have some familiarity with.  Another series of books that, in my opinion, would work well is the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher. Set in modern day Chicago it incorporates all horror elements  plus wizards, detectives and organuzed crime.  There are good and bad guys, a variety of "classes" - wizards, police, Knights of the Cross, the Denarians - demon possessed people, 3 types of vampires black magic wizards, Sidhe of the Summer and Winter and more.

One idea could be to ahve a Terminator MMo with humans and Skynet machines fighting over terratory. Also PvE wise you could have it where the Humans earn Stuff by going to kill PvE Skynet machines or recovering pre-apocolypse gear such as generators or guns. meanwhile you can have the Skynet players go around hunting down rogue Machines and locating pre-Apocolypse items for salvaging or melting down for raw materials for Skynet.

The main focus tho would be PvP between the resistance and Skynet. the resistance will ahve a wide range of troop types for you to choos from ranging from a common soldier to a specialist i.e. a heavy wepons guy or a medic. Also vehicles will be available such as trucks and bikes. The you will see that skynet has a wide range of machines for you to choose from ranging from the basic drone [which could be armed with a basic gun or a sniper rifle or a spotting scope for long range artillery] to a form of terminator. And vehicle wise you will ahve bikes and big tracked walkers exept you will be the vehicle instead of piloting it.

Anyway thats my basic idea feel free to add to it or alter something.
