As far as the topic, I never was interested in Darkfall, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this guys exit novel. Very interesting to read.

A really good read.  It states what others have said on this forum, but with a little more articulation and justification for the reasons he left.  It was well thought out.  It is a bit shameful that the mods at that forum are still in "spin" mode and delete all the threads that disagree with their point of view.  It would have been interesting to see how this thread would have run over there.  Of course, with the declining number of active accounts, people may have already moved on and the only ones left over there are the....ummm...."faithful"...

person plays to little = pathetic losers who obviously didn't play long enough to learn how to play the game.

person plays to much = pathetic loser that is bored/lost city and rage quit/got ganked/lying cause really didn't play that long/really didn't hate the game because, gosh, they played for so long/<insert favorite attack here>...

 

So what is the "sweet spot" time wise that one can claim to have played the game without falling into either of the above categories???

That said, the "Tasos Standard" is, in principle, pretty much the way it comes down. If you say DF is good, you've played it long enough, no matter how much or little time you spent. If you don't like it, then no amount of time was enough. The evidence of it is right in these threads...

Someone says they played for 3 hours.. "not long enough!".
Someone says they played for hundreds of hours "Why did you play it so long if you didn't like it?"

The only "correct" answer DF fans will accept is some variation on "DF is awesome".

And if someone plays 9 hours, like Ed, and gives a review, he still gets flamed.   A bit hypocritical if you ask me.

Of course not, it's slightly insane. I wish I had the time to do anything that  long. I just don't have the time nor inclination to do it.

Whether or not I agree with is not what I was trying to say. I respect it as it is his experience, I simply gave my opinion as to why it might be so heated. Logic is only as effective as the premises one uses to prove their point. It isn't as concrete as math or physics, it's merely a perspective.

Gaming is like any bad habit I suppose. Just about anything done in moderation is "OK", yep smoking, drinking, crack even arsenic can be taken in small doses, however as the dosage increases the sensitivity usually increases exponentially. This would, I believe hold true in this environment as well. I hate getting my ass handed to me once a day, I really hate getting my ass handed to me twice a day and I positively can't stand getting my ass handed to me three times a day when I play twelve hours a day and I must be better than everyone else cause no one else tries as hard as me, therefore the game must be totally flawed. I can log on to WOW and own everyone cause I know all the tricks and here I can't do crap.

I can totally see this delusional state from ANYONE that immerses themselves in FANTASY for TWELVE hours a day for MONTHS....

It's your opinion to think he's nuts. It's your opinion to think gaming is like crack (there are studies showing it to be likely the case).

My question is: Why are you taking this so seriously? If you really want to help, find him and send him a PM with helpful links to get that needed help. Just relax a little, we're mainly having fun because it's so ludicrous.  It's like those funny videos of kids raging at their monitors playing their games. It's silly(sad too but more funny).

Back on topic, I have little interest in continuing this debate as there is definately numerous and continous points of view. The point I am trying to make is... just because the OP took an excessive dosage for an extended period of time of "something" that he either was not suited to or did not care for does NOT add ANY validity to his claims. It is sufficient to say that 'he" did not like or care for the game.

If we do something we like a lot, we tend to say we "LOVE" it, however if we do(or are made to do) something we don't like frequently we tend to say we "hate it". In reality even pleasureable thing can become unpleasant in excess. I would still have to stay with MY opinion that 12 hours a day for months IS excessive, even sex would become unpleasureable at that pace....

I'd say it has potential if it wasn't in the hands of the current developers.
