Mythos met a sad end when Flagship Studios went down, but the newly reformed Runic Games brings a lot of those developers over and they're hard at work on a new online game called Torchlight.

This lighter, casual game, will kick off later this year as a single-player experience, before expanding into an MMO.

This new game is, like Mythos before it, aimed at a far more casual audience. Prior to Mythos, many of the developers also worked on Diablo. Naturally, Torchlight is an action/adventure RPG.

Check out the Torchlight section here.

Awesome, tossing down my support for Runic all the way.

Been keeping up with this the whole time, was wondering if it'd be added here, pumped to see it has been now ;)

But isn't anyone concerend that the same people just won't be able to bring it on home? Why is Torchlight going to get it right, especially when using the same people?

Is there something else that needs to be said? Is there a great project manager heading the team or something?

Well, having played both Hellgate and Mythos pretty extensively... I definitely felt HGL had problems, tried to do too much and didn't really nail any of it, more of a jack of all trades type of game. Mythos on the other hand I greatly enjoyed, it was shaping into a very fun game. So I'm definitely looking forward to what they can do with Torchlight.

so wait, theyre releasing the single player part and ADDING an mmo?

so basically theyre throwing something out there to get money and hopefully its enough for them to continue development on an mmo.

im calling it dead company in 2 years.

Games i'm playing right now...

That's not how it is going at all. The MMO's production is entirely funded by Perfect World, and the single player game is something PW is letting them do as they develop materials for the MMO. Here is a quote by John Dunbar, one of the developers at Runic:

Webbstre wrote:Whether or not the single player game is just a way to make enough money to hold Runic over until the MMO is finished

This is an understandable concern, but it's actually already taken care of. Perfect World is funding the production of the MMO, and it will get finished regardless of what happens with single player. Since single player games don't really work in China, Perfect World is kindly indulging us here. The single player game offers us a really nice stepping stone to the MMO, but it's also a game we really want to make. It's good for our sanity to release something sooner rather than later, and I'm excited to see what sort of mods people come up with.

Both games are made by the same tools, but they will be completely separate games, not an add-on of any sort. The gameplay between the two games will be similar, but not identical. You can find out a lot of info about about what we know about the games so far by stopping by RGF, where the developers often come post on our forums and sometimes answer questions.

Pretty much sums up my sentiments to the word,

HGL I will agree had a plethora of issues. Mythos on the other hand, was exceptionally enjoyable and peeled many hours away from my social endeavours. I'm hoping Torchlight will do the same.

Awesome! Torchlight will be much better than Mythos and we will have ourselves a nice mmo to play. Go Runic!
