I have actually started a new project to answer this specific question. Can a new player starting today compete?

If you are interested in following my progress as I play check out this blog.

I have been playing EVE for a couple of years now and i still feel like a noob , there is always something new to learn and right now its pvp for me. lucky for me im part of a great and friendly corp  , but im losing ships all over the place and i dont care cause its so much fun ! i mainly mine to build ships but now i mine to build ships for faction wars and its breathed a whole new life on EVE and the future is bright.

I hope you enjoy your time in EVE, and just remember that you WILL  lose ships but thats the nature of the game. you will laugh you will get mad, you will feel like screaming    at the git thats just blown your first descent ship up but think of it this way he proberly started the same.

 hey guys

Thanks for the replies

Im on the character creation screen now.. and its asking me to choose a race. Does it matter which one I go with? Does "miner" give me any special benefits to mining (for example?)

Am I still able to be friends/talk with/etc with all the other races?

Getting closer to being in space :P Can't wait! lol!

Thanks again for all the great posts guys.. fantastic community I can see :)

Anyways, Im looking forward to giving this a go! Hopefully I enjoy it and end up subbing. I've been looking for a solid MMO for quite some time, so Im glad Im possibly not too late ;)

Cammy you shouldnt worry about me :) , i have been playing eve on and off since 2003 when it came out and im sitting on more than enough ISK atm.

So for me to give 10m ISK out to a new guy is just me being friendly, and im currently in 0 sec,  not comming out anytime soon :) , but i will sent you some money.

And i would say no its never to late to start playing eve, you just need to know what you are going to do with your character from the start, either your a fighter or your a lover :)

Never the less, post your name here or sent me a pm and i will set you up with 10m ISK

Darnit, where are kind people like you around when needed? :/ Oh well, atleast im getting up to the exhumer books price slowly but steadily (23m to go)

I started back in 2008 with my character, though my toon says it's about a year old, it has roughly 6mill Sp and ~2 months of playtime give or take. So im still very new to the game, just resubbed today actually and im having a blast again mining ombre like there is no tomorrow.

Butl like many other has stated before, it is never too late to get into Eve. Its fun and addictive, it takes some brains to get through, but you reek in more rewarding stuff than in most other games. And if anyone wouldbe interested in playing eve, just toss me a pm and i'll hook you up with a longer trial than those 14-days~

Cheers

- Maleith

Well im allways around on the mmo boards , i just dont see every post :) , but i can surely help you on the way to the exhumer book if you put your name here :)

I agree, long run, the blog would never end. However, I have been saying this for the past year or so and my friends / family just dont buy it.

"You can never catch up"

"You can never compete"

"They will always beat you"

over and over... so I said screw it, Ill make a new toon on a new account, no help at all from any other toon, join a corp anonymously and work my way straight into pvp in a few weeks, not years.

Documenting my kills as I go, so hopefully encouraging some of the folks who think its impossible to give the game a shot.

Hi there,

good luck on your first explorations. It is grand new galaxy out there.

One word of advice maybe, dont believe everything you read or hear. Not all 'friendly nice' people are genuine. Present company on the forum excluded

Life in EVE is just RL, many thousands (40-50.000 at times) playing at the same time. Some are great, others are little buggers. And then there is the occassional SoB that ruins your day. It WILL happen and dont let it get to you. Maybe you decide on a carreer as a pirate yourself and then you will be the one praying on others. There is deceide, treason, robbery and backstabbing.

BUT it is great fun. Just get yourself into a good friendly corp. Space can be a huge lonely space and if you dont get involved in the social aspects you will not play EVE for long. I would suggest not to go for a mayor corp. Avoid corps that will use you only for mindless mining, transports or other things you dont really want to do. If you love mining, go for it, if you like missionrunning, do that. Key is, find a corp that will let you evolve into whatever direction you want to. Ofcourse there will be boring things to be done for the good of the corp but even this can be fun with a good bunch of friends that like having a laugh.

Enjoy and i will see you out there

I'm looking around for a nice MMO that's "different" from the rest and obviously this led me to EVE Online. I've heard lots of comments about the game (everything from you need a space manual to learn to play it, to best space sandbox game ever) :)

Its both.

Eve is the best MMO I have ever played, but it has a very steep learning curve. And it requires more time invested than a lot of other MMOs.

I'm curious if its too late to start playing EVE as a new player?

No. If anything, its a better time. They have streamlined the new player experience a lot more, and fixed a lot of bugs.

Since its a sandbox style, I figure it doesn't really have an end game

Yes, it has an endgame. The endgame is the drama in the player empires in nullsec space. The "endgame" content is entirely player driven. Thats what I love about this game.

starting off fresh would hopefully still have a healthy community, even though its a good few years old?

I believe Eve has more players now than at any time in the past. It is also a single shard server...everyone is in the same game world. Some people on here are complaining that it is too crowded if anything.

I admit I tried to give it a shot a few years ago but my PC couldn't handle it (I had a craptastic laptop) and I found the game to be somewhat confusing and slow starting.

There is a learning curve, no doubt. It is the most complex game I have ever played (both MMO and single player). But the payoff is in the form of way more freedom than any other game I have ever played. The learning curve will be easier now than it was last time, but you need to brace yourself for it nontheless. It will take some effort to get up to speed.

Do you have any links you can share to get me started?

Yes:

http://www.eve-agents.com/ - A searchable database for agents. This will become valuable after you get past the newbie stages.

Guides:

Tanking Guide - Tanking is not an option in Eve. Every ship is capable of it. You need to know how to optimize your defenses for whatever ship you are flying. The developers design the game on the ASSUMPTION that you have an optimized tank. As a newbie you can survive without it for a while against weak opponents, but you will need to optimize it eventually, even for PvE content.

EW Guide - Electronic warfare. Even if you choose not to specialize in it, it is a good idea to be familiar with it. Because eventually, even NPCs will use it against you.

Player/Mission Guides - These are cheat sheets for a lot of the PvE missions.

New Player Resources - Misc new player stuff that you will want to know.

Damages and Resists - A forum post showing detailed information on what factions use which damage types (and what they are most likely to be vulnerable to).

Eve Guides - A collection of tutorials for newies in Eve.

While it doesnt have any real practical value to a newbie, there is also this map showing the different player factions in nullsec.

  kwai,

That is super generious of you... and I'd appreciate any donations you want to send my way :) Of course Ill have to figure out how to find that money lol. At least I got my char started before bed last night, so this evening will be doing the tutorial and running my first missions. I figure Ill start off with mining so I can make some of my own capital and get started from there!

Braindead,

Thanks for the great feedback and lists - I will be checking those out today as well.

Sounds like EVE is still as popular as it was when it first was released (possibly even more so). I'm very much looking forward to giving this a try - I know some people had to get a trail 3-4 times before they ended up subbing and loving the game. I guess the learning curve makes it a bit time consuming since you need to dedicate time into it in order to benefit from the rewards.... that said I am looking forward to trying a REAL sandbox game, which I haven't found since the days of UO.

/happy panda :) Can't wait to get home and give this a whirl! If anyone wants to look me up please feel free! I'd very much enjoy meeting some friends online and get started in a corp when Im ready!

Eve is far more popular now than it ever was in the past. At launch you had 5,000 people on peak time during weekends, off times you had maybe 2,000. Now those numbers are 50,000+ weekend peak and 35,000 off times.

And this is all in one world? Are there not massive lag problems with that many ships in one space?

What about large scale fighting?

One thing I always found interesting above EVE is how there's no "servers" and everyone is in the same world... that's really awesome and something many MMOs just can't do correctly (no matter how hard they try)

Lag is an iussue in every game, it's just how much of there is. Eve has traditionaly had lag issues but over the last couple of years CCP has gotten the money to get some top of the line servers and they have optomized code and with the stackless io stuff they came up with large fleet battles of 1400 people are possible. Yes there is some lag but a couple of years ago getting just 700 people in one system would crash the node, so 1400 with some lag is pretty damn impressive.

1400 ships?? Holy hell!

That's VERY impressive!

I have played other games (that I won't name because Im not trying to start anything) :) but.... let's just say 25 "characters" could lag in some spots when a massive boss fight happens.... Actually, there's been many games I've played that just cannot handle massive PVP. 1400 ships is extremely impressive - I wonder how come this technology hasn't been used in other gaming MMO's coming out?

The servers are more expensive and are relatively new but it's the stackless io innovation from CCP themselves last year is what really made 1400 person fleet battles possible. The servers themselves are more for all the market transactions and database calls. In the end it all works together though.

Edit: Links to info about the servers they use www.ramsan.com/success/ccpgames.htm and www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp
