Only a fool hates that which he knows nothing about

From the Newsletter: cdn.funcom.com/aoc/newsletter/issue22/

Coming Soon:

"As a token of gratitude to the veterans of the community, we have chosen to award all accounts that have accumulated at least six months of subscription time since launch a free character slot. Your dedication is a great inspiration to everyone on the development team, and we hope that this token of appreciation shows our continued gratitude. This offer will also be available to those who accumulate six months of subscription later. The additional character slot will be made available with the launch of Update 5.

For those of you who have not quite racked up six months of subscription yet, you will have the opportunity to purchase a new character slot for 15 EUR/USD. The process will be quick and easy - just log into your account page and follow the instructions. You will only be allowed to purchase a maximum of two character slots. This new service will be available with the launch of Update 5."

Do you think that 6 months out of the last year is fair assessment for the free character slot?

If you haven't got 6 months up your sleeve, would you buy another character slot in the future? maybe? Price right?

Wow... so about $75 is worth one character slot...

If they weren't making this available to everyone through purchase, and bumped it up to 2-3 extra slots, I'd think it would be nice. Instead of increasing their slots though, why not some special mount available to only them?

Seriously, if you wanted to thank them  for staying on for what was basically a paid beta, give them something worth the cash invested, instead of saying thanks, though this ain't anything special.

Just because you are unique does not mean you are special

Eh nice gesture I guess if you're an altoholic like me.  I wouldn't pay $15 for one character slot, though.  Maybe 4 slots so I could have one character of each class.

ahh paid character slots now, I see FC has decided to take a few more steps down the slippery slope emulating SOE and we all know how successful their MMOs are.

WoW does the same thing. Pay for character transfers, redoing your character's appearance, giving your character a new name...

We realize how much you hate Funcom and AoC, but please don't blatantly mislead people :-)

no but one of their crappy CS's  screwed me out of 20 bucks when the billing system burped after I had been a customer for 5 years and that was enough to teach me they are a bunch of fools over there. I probably would stil have a station pass for VG and EQII just so I could log in when I felt like it but that 20 bucks was more important than my long term subscription to them I guess

I guess I really owe that CS in a way, he saved me from spending a lot of money on something I was rarely using anyway

I agree. 15 EUR for 1 char slot is a bit steep;  I would expect at least a couple for that price, but a nice gesture for the games vets.

What I don't understand is how buying a character slot is in any way different than getting your character's appearance redone. I thinking you are blowing it up a little more than you need to.

Hilarious to see them trying to sell for a premium, what they already have too much of .. Space.

maybe but it seems more like a sign of desperation to me than anything. You know if they would just settle down and make a quality game and treat the customers with a bit of respect they would not have to resort to selling character slots. I do like the idea of rewarding the vets though, that is kinda cool.

Not something I need but guess its nice for people who enjoy alts.

So many things I wish Funcom would do with this game, hate seeing things like this available... server transfers would be better (for a paid service) and why can't we get some resources put into game features.

Still no duel in 1.05, no cross-server mini-games, no larger/new mini-games and/or maps....

Really want something to do besides raid, but hey... i'll have another empty character slot  : )

WTB cross server pvp (larger scale).... thats all I want.  I don't want more character slots, I don't have anything to do when I log this one.

huh, go figure. Extra slots when I've only made on character before I desubbed, paying 15 bucks for another empty slot is a sure fires way to get me back in the game /sarcasm paused

I've been playing the game since launch, and by having characters on different servers and a couple mules I have exhausted all my character slots, so I really welcome this move. Ofcourse if you played for a month and left, this is not for you, but is rather for the people that stuck it out and are still enjoying the lands of Hyboria.

i think its a nice gesture but making it available to others for 15 bucks kinda says 6 months dedication = 15 bucks. yey

another mule for the resources i'm hoping to use one day is always welcome though.

First off i think FUNCOM is extremely stingy to give only 8 character slots across ALL servers.

More so when there are 12 classes in the game. So as it stands you cannot create 1 of each class!!!

By comparison i think WoW offers an upper limit of 50 character slots.

What may i ask are the limitations of giving your players more character slots? As far as i can see is it just a hard drive space which is so cheap now.

So i think it is cheeky of them to give an extra slot to veterans, and to charge $15 for one. No other company i know charges for extra slots as there is no need as they are not restricted in other games to start of with!

SOE gave extra character slots in EQII if you have  a Station Pass. Funny to see FC copying SOEs business plan. Like I said earlier in the thread, I wonder when they will go to the full out  micro payment system.

Out of interest does anyone know any other game where you are restricted to a ceratin number of slots and if so how many in ratio to the number of classes in the game?

per account or per server? I think all limit you to one degree or another, most give a half dozen or so per server it seems. I could not find any other western MMO that limited you to less than the # of classes per account though. I could be wrong, I tend to pick one server and stick with it in my games.

Will need a altaholic to answer this one.

I guess WoW is a pretty standard game and they have the following:

Max is 50 total with a 10 / server limit.

With 9 classes, so you can create a full set of classes on 5 different servers and have 5 left over.

In Aoc you can create a max of 8 over all servers, out of 12 classes and have to pay $/€15 for an extra one to a max of 11 (come the new patch)

I think the price is too high. Firstly doesn't take into account the exchange rates and secondly every other game I brought extra slots I got twice as many for the same price.

What is good though is with patch 1.05 essentially many classes will play differently enough.

If you get your free slot then that is a nice gesture to try something new out.

What they need to work on next is paid character server transfers at a decent price.

Guild Wars. You get 4 slots with the first campaign and 2 slots pr. extra campain for a total of 8 slots.

There are 10 different primary professions in GW.

Extra character slots are available for € 8.99 each. Seems like a nice price considering the game has no monthly fee.

What, AoC only gives you 8 character slots across all servers when there is 12 classes? And now they want you to pay 15$ to get more slots?

And people in LotrO complain they only get 7 slots PER SERVER with 9 classes.

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
