We wanted our fans to hear this from us first... We’re changing our Champions Online launch date from July 14th to September 1st of this year.

Why? Here’s what our own Bill Roper, Design Director and Executive Producer on Champions Online, had to say about it:

“It is critically important for an MMO to be as good as it possibly can be at launch. Through our constant dialogue with our vocal and supportive community of beta testers, we quickly realized that in order to implement certain features that we all considered important the development of Champions Online would require more time. So that's what we're going to give it. Cryptic has a proven track record of releasing solid games and we want to maintain that with Champions Online.”

What does this mean for you? Simply, more beta play time right now and a better, more polished game at launch

Well that is good to hear.

Seems like they listen to the beta testers, and want the game to be as polished as possible before release.

Shame. But consistent to short press nda release. Some reviewers claimed that game is still bit "raw"

Oh well it's a shame but if it needs the extra time then it needs it.

Oddly enough if you take a look over at the official forums there are ofc the QQ responses to the delay, oh how those ppl remind me of the ppl back before AoC went live, all screaming and throwing their toys out of the pram because the game got delayed and them all wanting it released NOW, and ofc those are probably the exact same ppl who came running straight back to the boards to tell us all "I QUIT AOC SUCKS, IT'S NOT FINISHED"

I'm happy to wait, plenty of other MMO's I can play in the mean time and tbh Sept isn't really that far away.

I personally dont mind, this is what more MMOs i think need - do not rush and take your time.

Besides...im still waiting for my beta invite :( - maybe this delay will give me some luck.

Well that sucks, i know they may need the time, but if this game comes out the same time Aion does then most will go there. Most people have played COX and this is not the much different. . Was looking for this to get out a few months earlier then aion. owell ....

AION...pfft - personally i have had enough of those type of fantasy games.

Give me something unique, Champions Online, SW:TOR, Fallen Earth, Earth Rise etc.

AION , to me, is personally the same old from what i have played in Wow, EQ2, VG, AOC, WAR etc...

You will 100% see me in CO! thats +1 pop!

Darn, I was hoping to play it this summer, but if its not ready to be released  I dont mind waiting till this fall and get a much more polished game. In the mean time I will fire my CoH account back up.

NOOO!!!! I was looking forward to it so bad. Well If it needs more work I guess its ok.

September 1st really is the latest they should release. Aion, Diablo 3,  and maybe SWTOR could drown this game out.

Sounds to me like your planning to play Aion anyway and that CO would have just been a filler and a wasted purchase for you, plus I thought ppl could already get their hands on Aion, so long as they are ok with playing a different version.

Yes, will be playing aion, but does not change the fact CO would have been great to get started on.. As far as a waste of time and money, no 2 months +  for 50 bucks is great a waste of money is the dinner me and wife got, i ordered a small pizza from there and wife got chicken, they put this weird cheese on it and hers had a very funny tasting  sauce, tasted nasty, but that was the way it was made.. then get a bill for $49.00 plus tip. now that was wasted.

Bill Roper said that?  Maybe he has finally learned his lesson after the failure of launch of Hellgate London and the sinking of his own company, Flagship, after that.  Maybe... but doubtful.

So would it be breaking the NDA to ask the beta testers their opinion on if they think the game will be polished and playable by the new Sept 1st date?

I think this is why there is such a big split on the whole idea of postponing the release dates of MMORPGs. One side says more time equals more polish and the other side has patiently waited on a postponement for games in the past and still got a mess. Nothing stinks worse than waiting on pins and needles for another three to six months on a game and then wondering what they did with that time when you finally play it. Hopefully that isn't the case with CO.

I will just say the majority of the beta testers saw this as a positive move for a succesful launch. We're all very happy with the launch date.

NCSoft has'nt officially confirmed 9/1/09 as a released date for Aion. It would be great though. I'll probably be playing Champions AND Aion when they are released :O

It tasted nasty and you still paid for it?

MMORPG Character Monuments

...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest...

6/10/09 5:03:12 PM#17

Its unfortunate, but I can understand why. The last year has demonstrated that there is a new (and much higher) expectation for MMOs at releaSE. They much be finley tuned and polished games right at the start ...very much like those of console platforms.

I wonder if its release will be even further delayed because of this

As a beta tester myself, I agree with the above.

Hope is not a strategy
