Played the game for two years and didnt notice much of a story at all until WOTLK. As for the novels i could be wrong but would bet the majority if not all came after the game.

 

I suggest you play the RTS games, yes the books didin't arrive until after the first WC game in 1994, but theres a rich history if you care to look, playing WoW for  2 years realy doesn't cut it.  Just as I know jack about the WH lore, from what I have picked up its a very shallow and basic lore but thats my opinion from my limited experience... I cannot name a single key character in WH but loads and their history in WC.

If you look back when Warcraft first came out, and hell even after the second one, the lore almost went hand and hand with some of stories told in the Warhammer Army books (Codexs for 40k players).  Magic portals bringing for warriors for chaos (dark portal anyone?) fight against the Empire blah blah blah.  It wasn't till the 3rd Warcraft game that Blizzard began to really work on its own lore.  As you notice they began going down a different path.  Then they released WoW and began releasing the novels and comics.  

My point is back in the beginning Warcraft look, and felt like a long campaign of Warhammer, which personally I was fine with since  Gameswork shop had yet to release a good pc game.  Everything about the first two games screamed, "Hey the creators love Warhammer, and we enjoyed its lore!" so they played with it to their own ends.  Which is FINE!

As for your comment  Warhammer has shallow lore, I can really tell you have no experience with gamesworkshop then.  Inside of each army book there are stories about your chosens races past, hereos, battles, and so forth.  Every year there are campaigns players all across the world that actually change the Warhammer (and 40k) worlds.   Also if you take 5 seconds and look up warhammer on amazon you'll find plenty of lore

11 pages and i havent seen any blizzard bashing .noone even care about the fact that they did steal IPs left and right. they did, the games they released were good,and the world didnt stop spinning.

Bottom line, Warcraft and starcraft play on the classic races and settings that all sci-fi and fantasy games,books and stories have always played on... Warhammer/40k created nothing original or can claim to be original in anyway... just as WoW/SC cannot.. its the story and characters that make a game great and Blizzard are masters at that.

 

I agree wtih you man, i think people trying to claim that warcraft online stole from warhammer universe is pretty stupid, it's like claiming that a game stole it's mechanics from a movie....or something considering warhammer came out after wow....
 

And no offense but I have studied the warhammer universe and I don't see any similarities between the two in question, and say lord of the rings, or c.s. lewis's books...so i mean if you really want to get nit picky, warhammer stole from conan.

WoW = Alliance vs horde

A common misconception, there is no Alliance vs Horde in WoW, there is no good vs bad in WoW the story is fsr more complicated and rich than that

Warhammer = Order vs destruction

WoW = Alliance has 3 races  vs horde has 3 races

WoW has 10 races at present, 8 at release 4.5 years ago, you didnt even know that?

Warhammer = order has 3 races vs destruction has 3 races.

        Its not a copy....its a greatly dumbed down version of it......WoW took the things that are in EQ and made them 1000X easier for the user.......They made the game so your 5 year old brother could play it.......EQ had some horrible time sinks no doubt but as far as the challenge of the game it was light years ahead of WoW.

All "ZOMG WoW COPIED X" or "X is a WoW CLONE"  or  "STOLE" used in any way shape or form ASIDE.

I'm enjoying WoW now and the lore is really interesting. 

I played WAR for 2 months and Felt it was too choppy of a game I might go back to it if they refine it but It's just not fun for me right now.


I see alot of tabletop QQIng. What about D&D?

On a different note, anyone else find it odd that whenever they bash on the Fact that Warcraft universe did start out VERY VERY similar to the warhammer universe most of those saying "nu uh stop hating!!"   ONLY mention World of Warcraft and Warhammer Online?  As if neither existed when they were Rts games, go back and look, they always say Wow even though the original flamefest started from a statement about the original Warcaft: Orcs and Humans game.   

Say does anyone remember Space Hulk? oooh that was a great one back then.  

Sorry back on topic, yes they are similar, no denying it unless you choose to.   Doesn't mean that blizz doesn't make a great game.
