Well, what do you all think? Is gold buying and steroid use in professional baseball the same?

Are gold buying and steroid use in sports the same?

Yes

Is it just me or are threads on MMORPG becoming more and more ridiculous?

I'd like to see steroids legalized in Baseball. If fans truly hated sterioid use, then Baseball teams would be going broke because no one was going to games or watching them on TV, but that hasn't happened.

I'm not so much bothered by gold farmers and gold sellers. Rather than try to stop gold farmers and gold sellers, I"d rather see a game design that discourages gold farming to the point it's just not worth it.

I'm not sure you can make a direct comparison. Baseball is governed by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. All Baseball teams have to follow the same rules. Also, steroid use is a health issue. The reason steroids are banned is because the Baseball Commission doesn't want players falling dead because of using drugs that are not healthy.

Selling gold on the other hand is not regulated by one governering body. It's determined by each individual MMORPG and their TOS agreement and EULA. Selling gold has no health issues, it's more of an economic issue.

Ultimately the decision should be left up to the stake holders that actually control these activities. In other words, the Commissioner gets to decide whether steroids are allowed in baseball, and the Publishers and Developers decide whether to allow gold selling in MMORPGs.

But, if I were the commissioner, I'd allow doctor perscribed steroids. If you croak, that's between you and your doctor.

If I were publishing or developing an MMORPG, I'd try to discourage gold selling more by my game design, then by enforcement, i.e. suing gold sellers. I'd still sue them, but that's only going to be partly successful. The better course of action is to design a game that puts them out of business.

Playing devils advocate here, sort of..

Why not have an "Enhanced Major League"? Forget this suspensions and remove whether of not these players deserve a Hall of Fame or have an Asterisk put to their name.

I propose anytime a professional player tests positive for a performance enhancing drug, their contract is nullified and they go into a new baseball league "the EMLB" let them take all the drugs they want in this league. just play by the rules of baseball. Lets see the game evolves into a bunch of acne, womanly breated ,behemoths go at it against each other.  At least we know what to expect in this league.

John Stossel wrote an interesting article on steroids and medical effects - you may be surprised.

Also an argument on how the game has changed to the point where steroids is just the most recent enhancement in the game.

I have to agree here. Steriods give you an unfair advantage just like farming. I think that one of the differences is people who buy gold do it because they enjoy a game and their real time is more valuable than real money. Steroid users are similar to gold buyers but not really. Many pro baseball players are given the steroids for free. So what if you were given lots of gold for free that gave you an unfair advantage, is that still unfair?

Everyone here does realize that steroids dont just make muscles just bulge out of your arms right? All it does it reduce the time you have to rest between working out. So it would be more realistic to say Are people who play 24 hours a day in mmorpg's to farm gold similar to professional baseball players who use steroids?

and what about all the people these roid rage freaks yould have running around if roids were legal are gonna kill and mentally destroy with their roid rage.  roid rage is very real, look how many football baseball and pro wrestlers have done murder suicides on their friends and families in the recent years, it almost never makes the news because no one wants to admit theyre just as much a part of the problem by cheering on the roid raged freaks instead of boycotting them until they clean up their acts.  as far as the gold selling in mmos it doesnt really have the same impact on real life but it definitely screws up the in game economies and makes people want to quit games they once enjoyed.

If your time is more valuable than money, then go find something else to do.  MMOs, like it or not, require time.  That's part of the hobby.  If you don't like it, you need to find a different hobby.  It's no better to say "I want to play professional sports but I don't like all the training and the practice so I'm going to use steroids (or other enhancing drugs) so I don't have to actually do anything, I can just get to the good stuff."

Unfortunately, real life doesn't work that way.

It's worse than steroids & baseball because at least then, they are doing it to be truly top at something that has meaning. Wheres if you buy gold, you are just spending cash on virtual cheating to basically half to do less. In baseball the players that use sterioids are usually already top athletes that want an "Edge". In a MMO people who buy gold to get ahead usually just have no motivation and are not anywhere near the top.

Your sterioids analogy is off a bit. Bad players usually won't use steroids because they don't have much to lose and alot to gain naturally. Usualy it is amazing players feeling the peak of the mountain in their personal ability that use sterioids to become even more "amazing". If you are a dead-end athlete, then it wont make much of a difference, nor wil it put you at the top of your game.

I'm not pro gold buying/selling, but it works for some people.

Some people have extremly busy RL stuff and it limits their ability to have enough gold to make games enjoyable with such competitive economies.

well since games are made to have money sinks,no its not unfair to buy gold.spending endless hours to farm gold because the company that owns the game wants you to spent more time without having new content is not something that i pay for every month

You do realize that all steroids do is reduce the time you have to rest between working out right? So in reality its allowing your body to train and practice MORE. Unfortunately you post without knowing the facts.

It is already legal in quite a few MMOs. And straightly speaking, against company policy is not exactly "illegal". No one is going to jail for gold buying.

You do realize that this is an analogy, right?  Stop getting hung up in the irrelevant details and actually debate what it means.

If you don't get the analogy between those things you should think more. But then, you could read the mentioned article about steroids and see that they are not as deadly as the press makes them seem, heck, even drugs when not overabused are not that deadly, instead the why not do it resides into more than being bad for your health.

And sorry, I can't think of illegal gold sales without associating with F2P item malls in the sense that they are merely a legalized real-gold sink into "asteroids" for your character.

Yes, they can be compared and pretty much are the same - while in sports it reduces the time you have to train, increases your physical limits or resistance, it pretty much does the relative same in RPGs: reduces the time you have to spend, increases your gameplay limits (would you have be able to farm for that big item otherwise? would you have been able to reach that level or rule in pvp without the big xp enhancers, attribute enchances and upgrade enhancers?).

IMO, when MMORPGs let more and more people buy gold, and when they put their F2P lies with their cash shops, they are merely abusing their idiot mechanics that fail to remove what makes farming boring or unnecessary and let people sink their money when their MMO fails.

If you HAVE TO BUY gold in a MMO, it fails for you, fact. Go play in some single-player RPG environment where you can cheat freely, the MMO part of the genre has to constantly fight against things that give edges to other players - gold farming, power leveling, hacking, item malls and so on.

Don't start the "RPGs are uneven because you must spend time" BS - that is part of the character persistency and development mechanic of RPGs, and that merely exists to make people interested in playing - why should you keep killing virtual monsters on a not-so-great graphical and sound environment? Because you want to evolve in that game - gain experience, develop skills, gain acess to higher level maps and monsters, and go further in the storyline.

Time versus how you play should be the only valid measurements for your evolution games, or did people forget the objective of games is to have... fun? Probably, because they are too focused spending all their RL money power leveling characters and buying gold to afford everything in their games, simply because they do not enjoy the RPG part of games - RPGs are not for you then, there are certainly a lot of more competitive genres around: RTS, TCG, FPS, etc.
