Did anyone ever play microsoft's 'Mech Warrior' series?

That would make an amazing MMO! A great concept, huge amounts of strategy in equiping your mech and on the battle field, great potential for PvP and the original games were fantastic.

OK it might not be the best known game ever and I doubt it has a fan base to even slightly compare to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings but it would make a great MMO!

Someone should really be making that game!

I am puzzled no one has made one using mechs.  Seems to me to be a slam dunk that someone should try one.

The Mech Warrior series and novels had many interesting mech types and weapons. The lore is vast and a  content rich universe, a good scfi mmo that can deliver much game play and if made hope they use skill base progression instead of level based progression.

Its not a full blown MMO, but there is a MOD in the works using the Crysis engine.  http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/

Look at Force of Arms.  www.forceofarms.com

The game has some really neat possibilities and is very similar in some aspects to Battle Tech. I have been following the game for some time and will fill the void of a Battle Tech mmo.

Plus I heard that microsoft has the rights to Battle Tech. and if that is the case we will never see it for the PC.  They would put it out for the 360 instead.

Thanks guys, i'll have a look at both of those.

It's good to know someone has thought of doing that sort of MMO, it's just a shame that microsoft are holding back. I agree that if they do decide to make it they would launch on the Xbox, SHAME on them!

God, that brought back memories.  I used to play Mechwarrior online many years ago, back in the days of dial-up.

I am subscribed to a lot of gaming operations and i can remember seeing an all mech type game,by one of the asian developers.I cannot remember the game however as i am not that interested in a game like that.RF online offered one class the ability to operate a MECH and MANY wanted it ,was very popular amongst the RFO crowd.

I enjoyed the MW series of games also.I waited for quite awhile for the MW 5 to be released but it was cancelled in the end.You can pretty much thank "Mech Assault" for that as well as the trend to go dumbed down console for what was really a sim series as much a game.

I would definitely consider trying if they came out with a MMO MW that would stay true to the franchise

I have sunk many a pleasurable hour into Exteel.

Of course, it operates on a cash shop, so spending a little money on the game will help you get started. Last time I played it still wasn't necessary to succeed, however, as everything you could buy in the cash shop had an equivalent or superior 'credit' version (which is the money you win in the game by winning matches).

It's got the whole mech-building aspect (core, arms, legs, weapons, head, etc.), mech painting, very fast-paced action, pilot levels (which grant points that can be used for minor improvements). It's overall a very fun game.

Heck I think I might just reinstall it and play some more.

The Makers of Eve should develop it for microsoft.  Imagine the customizational aspects it could have.  Just a thought.

Smith and Tinker have the IP, as well as the Shadowrun IP (this company was founded by one of the original creators of both IPs at FASA) and they haven't shown any interest in making computer/video games out of either. They formed in 2007 and that was the last time they made a news update to their site. They used to have an employee bio section and job posting page but those are both gone now.

Course, their site only ever really talked about "toy making" so it's likely they were not going to make computer/video games at all. Which is a total waste of what the IPs they're holding and they might as well sell those IPs to someone like CCP who'll make good games from them.

I have been looking for this for years now :(

Sadly I think Microsoft still own the computer game rights to it and they are not planning anything.

And Shadowrun and Battletech are owned by Catalyst

Mechwarrior and Shadowrun (and others) electronic entertainment rights are licensed to Smith and Tinker (so Microsoft still "owns" them).

Shadowrun RPG and Classic Battletech/Mechwarrior/Aerotech/Battlemech is owned by Wizkids and has been licensed out to Catalyst to continue making the RPG books.

Nah. The makers of EVE should develop it for EVE.

A lot of players want some kind of ground combat in EVE. I'm not interested in running around as a foot-slogger, but plug my capsule into a customizable battle frame? Yeah, I'd be into that.

I was holding out for a NA release of Front Mission Online, but SE went Japan only with it. Even an Armored Core MMO would be cool. There are a lot of Mech properties out there that could work.

I'll have to look up Front Mission Online, as I completely enjoyed the turn-based Front Mission 4 on PlayStation2.  Aweseome game, great custimization of the mechs, and great skill synergy combo systems in the fighting.  I so enjoyed the Link combo system.  Thought it was very original and innovative.

Microsoft let the license for all the former FASA IPs go back to Jordan Weissman.  His new company, Smith and Tinker now has the rights to Mechwarrior, Crimson Skies and Shadowrun.  I'm not sure what they have in the works, but I don't think it's either Mech5 or a Mechwarrior MMO.  He has been more interested in collectible games than video games for the last decade.  Hopefully though, without Microsoft sitting on the license, we can finally hope to see a new 'Mech game soon.

Ideally,  I'd like to see a combined arms Battletech MMO... With 'Mechs, tanks, areospace.... of course I still think we are a long way away from any game that cool.  I'd even be happy with a regular Mechwarrior game at this point.... unfortunately, no one seems to be working on one, and it's been six years since the last one released.

A MW MMO will never work ,any Mech or Mecha MMOG will work for that matter cause it will just be like playing a online match with a bunch of guys, look at Exteel,it's considered a MMOG but it realy isnt in almost any aspect.

However a game based on several factions fighting in space for territory, having politics etc (like in EVE) and having mech/mechas as a feature that is hard to obtain would be more intresting.

Also a exemple of why a full out combat game wont work long time, look at Planet Side,it was good at the begining but it's barerly standing on it's feet.

I think we just need to quit thinking every MMO released has to be just like the ones released in the past.  First, it doesn't need to be an RPG to be an MMO.   I think MPBT 3025 was a step in the right direction, but the lackluster graphics and controls doomed it to never launch.

I believe that there is a huge market for action or FPS games that are perpetual and persistent.  people play those game because they are exciting and fun to play.  People love MMOs because they offer persistence, long term goals, and rewards for hard work and dedication... even though the goals and rewards are virtual, it still triggers a part of us that feels satisfaction at the completion of a task.

I think we are long overdue for MMOs that are actually exciting and fun to play, rather than boring and repetitive to play, but rewarding.  I don't need levels or skills in a mech MMO to make it fun for me... in fact I'd prefer it had neither.  All the game has to do in terms of progression and experience rewards is offer access to more equipment, or promotions in rank that don't make you more combat effective.  The last thing I would want to see are levels that make people do more damage with the same equipment... some RPG mechanics just have no place in a skill based, action game.
