According to a few people, you must have a good amount (subjective) of play time in order to review Darkfall.

What do you all think?

Amount of time needed before having an opinion about Darkfall.

0 - The people of Darkfall tell me how good/bad it is.
1-5 minutes. Enough to Create your character and look at the world
6-60(1hour) You've been able to rn around a bit, talk to some NPCs and kill some stuff
1-5 hours. You've had enough time to die to monsters and players, and you've done a few quests
6-9 hours. You've found some new places to explore, made a few friends
10-20 You start to see the grit of Darkfall. The higher level armor and mounts. Maybe you've joined a guild.
20-40 You've been playing Darkfall for a work weeks worth of time. You can loot quick, run faster, jump higher..
41+ Cities, Politics, Wars, and Conquests is what DF is about now.

As a general rule I give games 20 hours. But sometimes I just can't make myself devote that much time to a game.

The absolute minimum? Enough time to not get caught lying about the mechanics.

If i would do a review on a game as Darkfall i would join a clan (or several) and do some sieging. And attacking another city. Maybe try and raid some coust with a ship. This could take one or several hours.

But you would get a better picture about what DF is all about.

Killing some goblins in the noob area have not much to witht he gameplay.....atleast not a for a review.

Truthfully i think you need to be interested in a game before you can succesfully review it. If you like PVP and you go and play hello kitty online, guess what you wont like it.

If you like FPS as well as some sort of a open FFA PVP mmorpg game, you can review this game.

If you dont like it before you even play it, you will nerd ragequit. Plain and simple. You have to have someone who likes PVP with FFA, like a EVE review or a PRE-CU SWG or UO and then he can give a accurate review.

But getting someone from WOW or WAR is just plain retarded. Because I will never try AION, know why? BECAUSE I Have no interest in that type of game. But if someone paid me money to do a review in it, I would, And troll it and ragequit as well. Its common and if people dont get that, then you need to come back to reality and wake the hell up.

It is not the responsibility of the player to find the "Fun" in a game, its the responsibility of the game to show the player the fun.

Yeah basically i need to play it a few hours before makeing a informed review of any mmo or game. Getting out of starter areas and sample a bit of everything the game has, just short of joining a guild. Game mechanics are how reviews should be looked at and the depth of playability.

I don't think there really is, or should be, a hard and fast rule as to how long a reviewer should play. Instead, perhaps there should be some integrity guidelines. For example, suppose you are tasked with reviewing a game; If you create your character, enter the world and, after a short time, simply cannot bare to play the game any longer, perhaps you should recuse yourself from the review. At the minimum, a second reviewer should take a look to either verify your experience or go on to write a proper review. Ultimately, if two reviewer cannot bare to play the game for any length of time, then a bad review would be warrented. If one reviewer couldn't bare to play, but the second one could, then it just comes down to personal taste.

I know there are probably a bunch of holes with that line of thinking, but it's what popped into my head when i started typing my response...

If sieging and the like is SOO important, then why isn't it more accessible to the entire gameplay population? (this includes those who just logged in, and those who aren' t in clans)

I mean, if it's such an important feature, why is it hidden in time?

To review the game i would say 20+ hours.

To have an opinion i would say around 0 hours. Everyone is entitled to an opinion on the game whether they have played it or not. it's our own responsibility to take that opinion and either take it onboard or decide to make our own.

Like I said thats your outlook. If you go into the game and just stand there you expect it to be fun? sorry never seen a game like that.

And the game game did add the tools for fun. It just didnt hold your hand showing you. It has the fun, in everything I do I consider fun. From running from one place to another while avoiding death FUN. To killing NPCS while watching for the occasional RED or opposite race squads. While finding a red and getting into a 1vs1 fight.

This game does provide fun, but if you dont like this genre, you will whine and not like it. Its that simple. If you dont like full loot mmorpg pvp ffa with a big map and fps combat that has gameplay over graphics then you will not like it, but if this does interest you, then you should atleast try it. Its pretty simple. Its a niche game. More argueing on your opinions mrbloodworth is fairly worthless. If you dislike it so much why do you keep posting here.

Some people like to siege, some people like to kill crafters, some people like to get to mastery crafting, some people like to sit in NPC towns waiting for things like a unfriendly guild to come.

Some people like to just RPG on a boat or elsewhere. Some people like to kill PVE's

Just because he likes siege doesnt mean that the game should be based upon that aspect. Its this kind of thinking that gives dfo a bad name. This is a Free game. You have to make your own way, the game does not make it for you, it just gives you the tool, do with it what you will. Its a niche some like that some dont. I do.

It's this type of attitude that keeps people from being interested in the first place. You can't generalize game players to the degree you seem to think they are. Just because someone plays one game does not mean that they do not desire change or something more challenging.

It would not be because its a important feature, its because its a different feature from many other MMOs. Anbd i would get a nice view of massive PvP battles, magic, mounts, city and empire building and the games politic.

As i said, showing (or telling) about some PvE goblin hunting we can see in most MMOs.

And last, sieging is accessible to the entire population....but you dont have to do it if you dont want to : )

people liking something doesn't really validate its quality, obviously that goes for both games listed. Also you didn't even make a point to be proven so i don't know why you feel so happy with yourself.

This is something I don't understand, why does not liking DF automatically means you like WoW and vice versa? Why always go to the two extremes?

Let's talk about a different, but similar example.

If I was a new WoW player for instance, and I would make a review for my playtime from Lv.1 to 30.

And then I would review, based on my own opinion and the gameplay that, I found the game boring, lack of interaction with other players, no depth to the game, it's laggy, don't like the graphics and etc etc... whatever comment you think anyone could come up with in a review.

What would most WoW or ex-WoW players say?

"Well... you've only been playing for a few days to get to Lv.30 (some can do it in a few hours), Lv.30's gameplay is no where near the kind of gameplay a Lv. 80 has in Northrend, it's a totally different kind of game then... and it's better because of this and that and this... etc..."

Hope I don't have to specify out my point here, I've been playing Darkfall for a mont or 2 now, and I wouldn't even trust myself to do it a proper review, so I can't see how someone who only plays for a few hours can have the "enlighthed" grasp of the whole game in that sort of time. More times than none, I felt I wanted to quit the game, out of frustration to things that happens in it, but eventually you realize that whenever you lost wasn't actually worth that much and that there is way more to do.

So whoever wrote blogs and reviews about any games actually, should always be read from viewer with careful analysist. There are tons of people you disagree with in RL and you shouldn't just go around random stuff people write and take it for granted.

Game: an amusement or pastime

Work: exert oneself by doing mental or physical work for a purpose or out of necessity

So, if I need to do X to enjoy Darkfall, doesn't that technically make it work?

Depends on how shallow the game is.  If the game just rinses and repeats the same thing over and over again it wouldn't take long at all but if the game is more complex it could take a very long time.  For example if someone were to only play a game like UO for a few hours they really wouldn't get a good grasp of its complexity.
