I still want to try this game out, but have a friend I am playing WoW with right now, so it'll have to wait a little while until we get bored of it. From all the pictures I have seen for TCoS it seems to have a nice art style. Some of the buildings even seemed to have a Tim Burtan feel to them. In a few months after the game has been out longer and has had the time to get rid of the post launch bugs I will most certainly give it a try. I will make up my own mind as to whether or not it is a crappy game.

I will also point out I still have a issue with the way they did their open beta in charging players for it. Guess I will have to get past the grudge I have over their greed.

Blood now would be the time to try it. TCOS has an promotion going on where you can play for free and level up as high as you would like until May 7th. This shows alot of courage in my opinion by a company now days. Not many would allow open access to the game free of charge. Then if you decide it's not for you no love lost, however, if you decide it's a game for you then all you do is pay a monthly fee. You don't even have to pay for the client at that point. It may not be a ground breaking game but the gameplay is different enough for me and the world is immersive once you get out of noobie land so I would definately say it's worth a download.

I've only been playing a couple of days, but so far I  have found the game mechanics refreshingly uncomplicated but by no means easy to master.

Combat, unlike WOW, War or AoC require you to really plan your skills prior to battle (a bit like Wizard101 in some ways, but without the kids) requiring a greater level of strategic thought.

The graphics are very distinct, aspects of Terry Pratchet/Tim Burton and I really, really like it (for the record I don't likeTerry Pratchet books), at high settings the quality is also very good and atmospheric. I get a good frame rate on high settings and I am only running an 8800GTX which isn't bad but not exactly bleeding edge. To be fair I  think the character graphics could be better, I  like the kooky styles but the quality just doesn't seem to be up there with the rest of the game.

I  have found the community to be mature and friendly, in fact the friendliness of the community has really taken me by surprise.

The quests so far are nothing really new, kill 10 of these, talk to NPC  X, etc. but the quest text is really entertaining, the NPCs have very distinct personalities and a lot of the quest dialogue has me chuckling to myself. You don't get that in an MMO  very often, so again, suprisingly I  am enjoying the questing more than I expected, even though on paper I  shouldn't be.

So far I  am only level 7 and the regulars say that it doesn't really get good until level 9-10 so I'm really looking forward to it.

p.s. the starter quests are REALLY  patronizing for MMO regulars, but just bear with it, it doesn't last long and believe it or not there are people playing for whom this is their first MMO.

I  can't say for now how long I  will be playing , but it is a fun and interesting diversion from the usual MMOs and it has a quirky character and friendly community that is rare these days.

p.s. I  play on EU PVE International server.

At one time recently I would have agreed with that completely, but not anymore.

After playing the beta of a popular upcoming MMOG, without naming any specific names due to the NDA, I came to the conclusion that I may be sticking with Spellborn for longer than I had anticipated. I felt no connection with my character, quests were meaningless gibberish, gameplay was nothing more than chasing map markers with the sole purpose of leveling up. It was a hollow experience.

Lol like you cant say which game your are currently testing -.- NDA only prevents you from leaking important ingame information thats all.. dont try to make it extra mysterious.

People that say this game is ONLY innovative in it's combat system as if it's a bad thing need to be beaten with a smart stick in the hopes they may one day produce viable offspring that will give back to the human race instead of being walking oxygen vacuums.

Combat is 90% of an MMO. I'd say innovating on 90% of an MMO is one hell of an accomplishment.

If some retard wants to go fishing I say let them brave that evil ball of burning fire called the sun and go do it themselves.

Will we be receiving any more insightful commentary from the mouth-breathers or am I free to go enjoy the game now?

This MMo is like drinking a classic fine wine. The first taste and sensation is eye opening but the experiences changes and blossoms as the wine rolls around on your palate. Most people would swig it  and have no idea of what they would be missing. For mmo's players we generally have alot of ripple drinkers so I am not suprised by their comments. I think most are drunk with you know what so it really would not matter anyway.

I find this game to be absolutely incredible.  The combat is incredibly refreshing, and the fact that the only thing limiting you is your skill cooldowns and what rotation the skill deck is on is a breath of fresh air.  "Mana" based systems are to me very tiresome and dull, as you worry more about conserving mana then doing things, as when you run out you're screwed.  The fact that you can build your own skill deck is also an incredible thing, as once all the skills are unlocked hours could be spent creating the perfect skilldeck (and you'll never really find one either).  The fact that gear is simply cosmetic is awesome, you can finally look how you want.  However for those of you that like stats on gear, there's sigils.  This system is quite incredible in itself.

The lore is awesome, and many quests have my laughing out loud, or really sympathizing with the NPCs.  That's something that most MMOs don't do (please, don't tell me that I'm a geek and to go get a life for saying that.).  The quests are incredible, and many things come back to bite you in the butt way later on.

The PVP is incredible, and in the next patch they are introducing Arena which will give it a purpose, and later on shard conquest which will add even more fun.  A battle against another player in spellborn is truly a battle of wits.

All that being said, there are some bugs and kinks that need to be worked out, but the devs have been putting out patches and hotfixes at a very good rate (whether acclaim implements them is another thing entirely...-.-).  This game ISN'T for everyone, as it's very intense and actually requires thought and skill to master unlike many  MMOs out there.  People will have negative opinions of this game, whether because it's too hard for them or they just don't like the system.  However, it's amazing and certaintly worth a try, and I ask people to not go and waste their time posting pointless threads about a game they don't like to "forewarn" others.  Every man to his own opinion, go give the game a try they're currently giving everyone 2 weeks of free sub time, as well as a up to level 7 indefinite trial (agreed, it is a bit to low, but they have stated they are raising the trial level).

To summarize for those of you who didn't read above:

  • Tcos is awesome IMO (for reasons see above)
  • It's not for everyone, it's quite a hard game unlike many other MMOs.
  • There are some kinks that need to be worked out, but the devs are putting out hotfixes ETC very quickly
  • You should try it, everyone gets 2 free weeks of subscription time currently)
  • And most importantly...
  • If you don't like the game, uninstall it.  Don't troll these forums to "forewarn" others about a bad game.

There was close to nothing I enjoyed about this game myself.  I liked the scripted ship event that kick starts the game.  I also really liked ranged combat.  Other than that it felt dull and unintuative.

I think this game may do fairly well though.  There seems to be a decent number of people who really love it.  Seems to fall into that love it or hate it catagory.

  • No, it really is not hard.  The UI and combat is a bit different but different =/= hard.  Eve=hard.

  • I agree here.  I think people should give any game a chance, especially when it's free.

  • What do you think the point of the internet is?  I'll give you a hint, it's information sharing(and porn).  One of the main attractions of this site is the diverse opinions represented.  You also might want to check into what the core definition of trolling is.  Giving a negative opinion of something isn't trolling.  Going to a KKK website to post 50 Cents newest song would be trolling.  Posting a negative opinion of a new product isn't trolling.

What you fail to realize is that people are discussing their opinion on the game. Opinions are not right or wrong when its based around why someone likes or dislikes a game. I dislike EVE because I hate spaceships...that doesn't make EVE a bad or good game.

This thread was debating what people liked and disliked about TCOS.

Please next time try and argue points about the game and try to do it without insults.

I forgot I wanted to comment on this.  You realize that being able to only access a few skills at a time, that are contained in a rolladex that only contains a portion of your overall skills available, is more limiting than almost any other mmo out there?

I'll use WoW as an example here.  Priest have dozens of abilities.  All available.  All the time.  Yes they have a limit on how many they can cast, but CD's and mana aside, they are all always available.  In TCoS you would have to break the dozens of priest spells down to, what was it, 16 or so?  That is a constraining approach to games.  If you like it that's fine, just don't make it out to be a limitless revolutionary concept, when in reality it's more constraining that the normal approach.

Quite personally...the OP is trolling...he basically hates half the things that people like about the game.  The game has been praised for it's visuals and innovative combat.  The skill deck requires actual skill and works relatively well, although it isn't explained well.  Character creation/customization is damn good, and the art style has a nice fable-ish feel to it.  And I have to say, I was really wowed by how amazing the Shards and Shardships looked...truly original.  The game could use some better quest dialogue...I know they're trying to be funny...but it looks sorta amateur.  Otherwise, so far the game's been a blast, and I expect that with some new features coming soon this game could claim a place in the industry.

Also...to all those shouting the "Play-to-beta" crap...remember that NO game is complete when it releases.  Not even WoW's expansions release with all their content.  If they did...then everyone would complete it within 3 months and be bored.  You try releasing a game called "Wrath of the Lich King" where the Lich King's instance isn't available yet so you can't stop his supposed "Wrath".  Seems ridiculous, yet that stuff happens all the time.

I love how peoples opinions are nullified by their hobby.  Makes perfect sense.

I played WoW for two years.  Come on now and tell me why my opinion isn't valid.

Actually no need.  You played WoW too until recently I'm guessing.  You had a level 75 DK which means you had a t least one level standard class.  It also means you played within the last few months that WotLK has been out.  It's funny that you used to play that game, but as soon as you quit every person who played that game with you loses the valitity of their opinion in your eyes because they play the same game you played.

Good job dodging the question.

My bad I shorted you 7 skills.  All the difference in the world.  Also, yea, if you're terrible you maybe only used 2 skills as a priest.  You probably also got kicked from raids for failing.

"Holy god" wtf is that anyway man?  I shorted you 7 skills.  7.  That's a reason for such a dramatic response?  Try and grow up a bit and lets talk about what I asked you about instead of dodging what you said.  Why is someones opinion invalid because they like wow?

I dunno, I personally am enjoying it.  It's not the second coming by any means, but there are several things I like and dislike about it:

Like:

Attempt to tell a story / the presentation: I hate MMOs that just through you in there.  I actually like to read the quests, listen to music, and admire the world.

The music, which I like - wish it played more often, but it sets the mood

The art direction (note: NOT LEVEL GRAPHIC DETAIL) has a good feel to it

Ability to be skinny, fat, buff, or massive (for humans, anyway) THOUGH I would have preferred if, instead of the Daevi (which feel as if they were just put in there to have something other than humans) I would have preferred only humans but additional options (child, normal (not buff), elderly, missing limbs, etc.).  Still, it's a nice change of pace from most MMOs where everyone looks like a Boris Vallejo painting come to life.

The way combat feels: the ability to have group buffs, the interaction between classes, the subjective feel of how you run and dodge and the accompanying animations, etc.

Dislike:

Low spawn rate of mobs (well, ones you need for quests, anyways - some mobs, like bandits and such, spawn way too quickly by contrast)

Camera often feels as if you are too close or too far from your character - perhaps the default is set too high

Skilldeck system feels restrictive, at least at the beginning

I haven't seen any armor to buy (nor clothing) that wasn't available at the beginning to choose from

Neutral:

Level of graphic detail: I don't care how many polygons are used, or how shiny the sweat is on someone's face, I only care about aesthetic beauty.  That's why I like Spellborn, and WoW, and Lotro...yet games like EQ2, where the animations seem off and everyone runs like they are a sped-up cartoon, I don't like.

PvP: Haven't tried it; generally don't PvP.

Guilds: Not in one yet

Raids/Dungeons: Haven't experienced one yet.

Whoah whats with all the flamebaiting and trolling over here today? :D

TCOS is a pretty good game imo, and its nice to see it along with a few other games like fallen Earth, Darkfall (even though its failed) and stuff like Champions online coming through with a different approach than the usual generic grinder clones like Aion.

it si true i use to play WoW im not one to lie just to get my point across. But it is very true that i never liked WoW. It just so happened that my 3 really good friends played and it was fun to hang out with them in there guild. I always watched tv or listened to music while i played because i was so bored with the game play. And you can believe what you want I was never kicked out of anything.....anyone can run up behing a mob and click 1,2,3,4,5 rinse repeat. It wasnt hard to not screw up.

The things about pathing, ai and models are all true they are real things not opinion. As a programmer i can tell you that they did not do a great job in this sense. But the opinion part about combat and art direaction.....if people love the WoW combat and art direction then YES im not going to take your opninion as anything becasue i hate the WoW art direction and combat. its that simple.

Yet if it's one thing WoW has proven...it's that people LIKE generic high fantasy MMORPG's where you grind to enjoy end-game content.  In fact....10's of Millions of people like it.  And then...the genre will cease to exist except for nostalgia...similar to the Platformer Genre...which used to be the be all end all of games.  Almost all games were platformers trying to cash in on Mario's success.  Now platformers are only made to remember the good old days.
