Within Temptation is one of the less original bands of its style, it was unoriginal when they started and still is unoriginal, but I understand some people really like the band, unfortunately the video is very, very cheesy. I dont know why they decided to use ingame scenes, it will look dated soon and the video just lost its artistic appeal and look like just a cheap marketing movie, in my opinion, the prerendered parts aren´t that bad, but the ingame/fight scenes are totally unnecessary. Movies and games should avoid Metal as soundtrack, even in this case where it is not the ingame soundtrack but just a promo. Metal and pop songs will always evoke a teen "aura" and the time when the game/movie was maded, while real soundtracks will just make the atmosphere/feeling of the game/movie grow. In my opinion, AION and Age of Conan videos with their original soundtracks are much more impactant, expressive and somehow "universal" than a TCoS video with a metal band. TCoS soundtrack is good, less expressive and well produced than AION, Age of Conan and Everques2 soundtrack (not talking about personal musical taste), but in my opinion, this TCoS/Metal promo is weak. Think about all movie teasers you saw, the ones with the movie original theme will always sound and look more expressive and unique than a teaser with a pop/rock (especially rock/metal) song in the background ..

Yay! I love this band and this song!! Great song, though yes the video itself is a little weak... even I can say that as a fan hehe. Still, great song and great game |

Originally posted by Umbral I agree with this. TCOS needs all the help it can get. I've seen a lot of promotional videos where it just uses the ingame music - for TCOS, the Metal/Pop technique doesn't do the game justice, because they are on completely different pages. When the videos I saw used the ingame music, it gave TCOS a level of mystery I've just never seen in a game before. I HAD to investigate more into the game. They should stick with that... |

Also, why do you need some random metal band when you have Jesper Kyd. ;) |

Exactly. As I said, it is clear that the producers of games like Aion, AoC and EQ2 had more money to expend on audio and music, these games also have talented composers, but Jesper Kyd did a great job (as usual) and his music express much more what TCoS lore is about than a Within Temptation´s song.

Absolute cheese at its worst! This is totally bog standard "heard it all before" generic angsty teen metal and doesnt fit with Chronicles of Spellborn at all. It only serves to cheapen what is actually a really good game. This is the sort of dull uninspired music that kids use to ruin gameplay footage. The in-game music of Spellborn is much better than this and is far more thought provoking. |

Well, thats YOUR opinion Neonwire, sure, but it's a bit off to put it forward as 'fact'. Who elected you Minister of Taste anyhow? You reallly come across as... well, y'know... in your post. I used to read this forum and it was full of nice posts with only the odd nasty one, but recently it's just getting as horrible as the rest of this site. I like it, others do as well.

Tammzin, it is totally understandable that you enjoy "within temptation" music, even my initial criticism is not a critic against metal, alternative, underground/pop music. But dont you think the original soundtrack of TCoS express more what the game is about? I played the beta, but I am not an active TCoS player, so maybe your opinion is more valid than mine, but in the end, as I said, usually pop music don´t fit well with game/movies teasers and promos, well, it can fit, but an original theme always make it sound/look "better". Anyway, I see we agree about the video, it is weak.

I don't understand the vitriol from some of the above posters. Yeah, the video isn't going to win awards. It's also 2 1/2 years old (which also says a bit about how long we are past the original projected release date). Still it's a promo for the game, made by a Dutch company, Spellborn NV, by a well-known (in Europe) Dutch symphonic metal band, Within Temptation. On their own site it says "”Since there are quite a few game fanatics in our band we didn't hesitate long when we were given the opportunity to work together with a game-developer on the music for a videogame. Especially since a game like 'The Chronicles of Spellborn' is graphically, as well as story-wise, very inspiring.” I love the in-game music by Jesper Kydd. It might be in my top 5 from the over 20 MMOs I've played. I also love Within Temptation, a band I'd never heard of until I started following TCoS last year. To slag their efforts as angsty teen metal is quite a dis-service to the band's volume of work over the past decade. By the way, they have another version of the video with no visual Spellborn references at all. If you think the game would be better served by a new promo video using some of the in-game music, maybe drop a line to the devs. They put together those earlier gameplay videos (eg "A Fine Day in the Midlands") that did include in-game music.
