Will people ever stop saying that? This is not true and has not been true for at least a month.

Yet I see it thrown around a lot by many people (I want to use the t-word but I'd rather not) even to this date.

How about the next time you make such a claim take 3 seconds of your life and check up on it.

If I'm wrong, please someone post the link.

People will still say Darkfall is in beta as long as on the game's main page you see, Beta first impressions and first wave of invites goes out.

Since there is no statement on Darkfalls main page that states game is released. It is safe to assume that the average gamer looking to try or purchase the game would think it is still in beta.

This is not what I quoted.

Nice effort though, try again.

Poor Darkfall will end,

Who cares? It is a game. If it succeeds cool, if it fails ok then.

it was released once someone was able to pay to play. Simple enough huh?

Unfortunately that release was in the form of a paid beta & a failed launch in a hurry to beat other MMOs to the jump, which will release this summer. And don't forget DF was in development for 8 years, lol.

EB Games doesn't even  find a Darkfall online, and   Fileplanet lists a download for the "Pre-order client".  Amazon.com also doesn't know what it is.   I think that this game failed to launch - which is why it is final but not released.  I think if those people who were "allowed" to buy it have favorable reviews they would be telling us how great it is and there would be a listed date as to when the rest of us could buy it.  My opinion, but is does seem to have faded into Limbo.

Yes, Darkfall is out..!

The company that made it is strapped for cash and only has enough resources to open 1 game server. Their publisher left them and their 1 game server is at capacity, so they cannot sell any more slots. Within 2 weeks, people will cancel and Aventurine will re-open the sales to replace those who left and will continue to use this method of "slot filling" until they either get enough money to open another server, or have to close their doors.

Exactly AV is not stupid, they know not to waste money on opening up several servers because in 5-7 months all they will need is 1 server anyways. Why waste money?

Waiting for: Final Fantasy XIV
Now Playing: COD4:MW2 (bye bye stars)
Worst MMO: Age of Conan
Favorite MMO: FFXI

Sounds like failure to launch combined with denial of the situation by the company.  1 server doesn't really a MMO make.  And, to me a launch means you can either buy the game in a store or download it from a site.  Sounds like it is a private, not a public affair.

Well, at least people have a good reason to give the credit card companies for charge backs. I think finding out the released game you paid for being advertised as a beta by the company itself is more than enough.

Funcom needs to change the /petition command into a general nano called "Summon Personal Jester"
with a 1 hour cast time and 90% fumble rate.

I keep hearing about this cloud computing thing and I bet that's where FC is putting the grahics engine. Right now they're investing in the weather balloon technology to get all the bits of code up there. Helium is expensive so it might take awhile.

This game is not officialy released in the US. So why would they set the state of the game to released, being a US website and all.

Uhmm, because they will probably make money by selling more copies now and then selling of surplus servers later if the subscription base goes down?

I have no idea what a couple of servers more would cost but I would be surprised if selling another 10.000 copies, at 50 bucks a pop, would not cover that and some to spare not to count that maybe the retention rate is maybe 10-20% meaning they will keep a couple of thousands of those 10k accounts sold. 10kx50+1.5k*10 = 500k+15k/month. Granted you have taxes and all that but you telling me a couple of servers will cost anywhere near that?

No, the reason for them not starting more servers is because the game is still in beta and not gone to full release yet. Many MMORPG companies does release "betas" but they release more servers. AV are trying to be smart and just release a few copies so not to give the game a bad name by releasing a bugged piece of software to the mainstream of gamers. Will that work? Who knows, think alot of people are pissed of that the game is actually released but they cant buy and play it.

I don't think there are a whole lot of companies who have launched and sustained MMO's without a publisher, if any.  As for it being live or not, I'm not sure how you can call a game 'live' when said game is not readily available for purchase.  What complicates things is there isn't a whole lot of examples where you can only buy and get into an MMO unless you are one of select few who happens to buy it at a predetermined time.

Yes, Aventurien would make more money if they opened a second server and took on more subscriptions..

But understand that the money to do so would be wasted, because Aventurine knows they don't have enough fans of the game anymore to fill 2 servers..! (20k people).

Like it or not, Darkfall has been released to the public and there will never be an additional server in Europe, let-alone in North America. That was a pipe dream when Aventurine was shopping around the game for a distributor and someone to host their game.  Since the "staggard release" and the NDA drop, the excitement over the game is next to nill. Aventurine will never find a NA partner, evAr!

Hosting it, would be too much of a liability

Again, we finished up beta and told them, Darkfall was not ready for release. Aventurine remained silent and then Tasos boasted they were releasing the game! Darkfall.. that long waited game IS released to the public. Matter of fact more Americans play the game than Europeans!

Yea I don't agree with that either.  Just because a game only has one server doesn't mean it's not a MMO.  If it can support a large number of players at a time, then it's a MMO.  The real question is what determines whether an MMO is 'live' or not.  Normally it was when you can puchase the game and  start paying a subscription fee.  In this case, part one of that statement (purchase the game) is limited (or non-existant).

MMOs require more reasoning and imagination than most stereotypically ''adult'' activities.

4/24/09 3:08:38 PM#69

I hate to pick nits, but there is a difference between 1 server (DF) that supports < 10k simultaneous players verses 1 server "cluster" (EvE) that supports 10's of thousands of simultaneous players.  I think it's accurate to say that a single "low population" server does not a MMORPG make.

I wouldn't consider Darkfall 'live'. I would consider it more in a coma on life support, slowly dieing.
