The only hope for difference is Guild Wars 2. The former Blizzard team seams to know the job. But .. they've destroyed the first GW with stupid inovations so i don't know. Besides the  absence of monthly fees leaves them behind other products of NCSoft. They left anet for a 2010-2011 launch period. If the game is ready at all then.

Seems like you played the wrong game dude. Loled at aion's bad animations, when it probably has the best animations ever seen in a mmo technicaly speaking (im a digital artist, I sure know how to measure that). loled at the crappy itemization also, when you have like 15-20 different sets every 10 levels, in war you had like 2 per tier at release and in aoc everyone had the same red robes, and in Aion you can swap skins..

I've been looking around for new upcoming MMO's, and it seems that alot of people really think Aion will be the next big MMO.

I decided to research abit more about Aion and it's the first game I've seen in a long time to have good, smooth gameplay, like WoW. I'm not saying that WoW is the best MMO out at the moment, though it does have the most subsribers, but I think part of the reason it is so popular is the gameplay, movements, smoothness of combat, etc.

Aion looks very promising, but I also notice it is by the company, playNC, which has a number of different MMO's which have not been very successful (Lineage 1 & 2, Guildwars, City of Heroes/Villains).

So, do YOU think Aion will be the next big MMO?

Of course not. It's WoW-like, and "you can't out-WoW, WoW". So there you go.

It's WoW-like? Are you serious? Have you played the game?

I've just got done playing the Chinese open beta of Aion,  and I can tell you right now it's nothing like WoW.

I am actually quite stunned at your comment, and cannot fathom on how/where you have postulated that idea.

Wait, WoW has people and Aion has people. Oh Gawd it's WoW-like...

It's because a large portion of the MMO community has played WoW for a year, two, maybe three and considers themselves experts of the genre.  Everything is a WoW ripoff, nothing will ever be a WoW killer, WoW is a hardcore MMO, etc etc.

I'd love to see the negative detailed reviews every single game had after the NDA was lifted, yet, al we are getting is:

a) It's more of the same -> Generic argument that could be used in 99% of the mmorpgs, you can't be wrong with that one, people will believe you've played!

b) It's a korean grinder -> Generic prejudice towards korean games, as long as the game is korean, you can state it's a grinder and add "ive played it so I know", I mean, people will even believe that load of crap lol!

c) Its a lineage 2 clone -> Holy moly, this is like the bestest argument ever, I mean, NCsoft seoul, games developed: Lineage I, Lineage II and Aion, saying that Aion is a L2 clone will sure be true, it's not like companies ever change or adapt to new markets!

d) Quests are weak -> Hehe, since all these retards haven't played the game, I will drop this in so people think I'm cool.

e) Prejudices -> Oh yeah baby, everyone looks the same, everyone looks like super models on steroids, and the females are all hookers, it's korean, it sure has to be like this!!!

f) Picking up a characteristic feature and make it look like it's just a clichè, something that has no use other than to show off some pretty pictures, in this concrete example, wings. Yeah, let's talk about how they pasted some wings to every character and then they thought it would be innovative but failed, since...wings are useless in Aion!

Now, talking seriously, that's like the manual of reviewing a game you've never played nor had interest in, hope it helps you all to recognize people are talking out of their asses, it usually follows this pattern since they can't go into detail :< Check out the aion forums for some detailed reviews of people who have obviously played, will paypal you 0,50$ if you find a negative one.

They rely heavily on mindless grind, the method in which characters and made and customized is also typical of the korean mmorpgs, and in my opinion is not very good. It never has been. Items are lacking. It excels at art style, but thats just about it, the games themselves tend to be very very shallow and mechanical in nature. They tend to lack the "soul" found in many a western mmorpg.

Fail at reading don't you? You posted this right after a post explaining how the game is not how you describe.

^i find this apparent nerd elitism and attempts at belittlement amusing to say the least. I wasnt aware there is a rule that states one has to read the entire thread and every comment within that thread before being able to comment on the ORIGINAL TOPIC. Sadly cynthe, this rule does not exist, furthermore i trust my own experience of the game over someone elses. Aion is typical of Korean mmorpgs, it just had a bigger budget than the rest. I found the game to be typical of the korean mmorpgs, uninspired, overly flashy, sub par game design, mechanical in production, and quite honestly targeted towards the asian gamer (non japanese). NCsoft has had too many flops on their hands, they will not take any more unnecessary risks, which is why they created this game that will appeal to their localized region.

What I love about Aion is how creepy-defensive the fanboys get.  Aion won't be the next big MMO, but it will be the next big trolling subject for the mmorpg, com forums. If you ever get bored, simply make a post suggesting that the game falls somewhere short of being the Second Coming of Jesus H. Christ Himself, and the responses should keep you entertained for a few hours.

Dammit!

4/21/09 10:53:02 PM#235

I don't consider myself a fanboi of any one game, I'm a gamer pure and simple. I like to play all types of games and if it works for me I keep coming back, if not then I keep it moving. I only really give my opinion on games I've played or have done research on it. I don't know how it works, some games hook me and some don't. I keep going back to a modded out oblivion that I keep on my hard drive every now and then, to raid my favorite dungeon or start a newbie and laugh at getting owned. I play games as a recreation and also like to stay on top of the latest trends, I just keep it simple and keep it moving.

Sometimes the hook could also be the way a certain character plays, as in the WoW hunter or the Paladin of FFXi or the healer from runes of magic. I can't say how Aion will affect me, I'll play it and then see.

Has anyone here played it extensively and can give their honest opinion on the game? Maybe it would help put this thread back on track.

Yes, Aion will be the next big game.

If by big you mean a stable, good sized community around 300k, great graphics, practically bug free and fun.

You proved you have no point.. beyond that I guess I'm lost on what point you made?

Oh wait I should check my post history to see if I'm an Aion fanboi.... *clicks off to check..*

No, Aion won't be the next big thing.  It doesn't really do anything new. It's got a few gimmicks which make it interesting, but at its heart it's just another level-based quest grinder. It follows the same formula as a hundred other generic fantasy MMORPGs.

Out of all the posts in this thread, that one made the strongest point.

We currently have a level-based quest grinder with 11m subs. so i dont see your point.

If this thread is about Aion begin the next big thing as a revolutionary game then belive me it wont be, but if this thread is about Aion begin the next big hit in MMO market belive me it will, for sure will be the most suscesfull MMO after WoW, that can be sad or not but it will be a fact, mark my words.

So when is the game out in EU and NA so that we can find out if it will or will not be the next big MMO?

And btw being a "big MMO" does not necessarily mean that it has to be more popular than WoW. I am 100% sure that if it is good that you have people playing both, or swing between the two

Currently playing WoW.

Lol this is hilarious! :) I totally agree with bonobotheory. The behaviour of ppl like this make companies like Ncsoft floating the market with garbage. Only making of such a game is insult to any brain having long time gamer. Well make attractive elf chicks and all will fall to that. After all those people invented the manga :D. What i've learned in this forum in other thread wich seams logical is that Ncsoft will delay Guild Wars 2 because of this piece of crap. We have to w8 Aion release in eu and us and months after we may see a gw2 info.

Cry more. Aion is not impacting GW2's release, though the MMO Carbine are working on might be impacting GW2's release.

In the east 100%. Dont know how good its gonna be here.

It will find its audience, no doubt, but contrary to what the fanboys say, it is just a disguised Lineage 3, same crappy mechanics, same crappy class system, same crappy itemization, same "rigid' animation and feeling, same flawed PvP system etc

Sure there a bit less grinding, a few more quests (that are extremely basics for most of them) but it won't be enough to make it appealing enough for the non-korean audience.

NCsoft will fail, yet again, at grasping the Western MMO audience, but will probably yet again get the eastern audience.

You sir have no clue about AION its know where near gameplay wise like Lineage 2. Ask any Lineage 2 fan and they gonna tell u they dont like it. This game is made to attract the average WoW noob..

Yup AION is the Asia WOW and it is nothing at all like L2, the only MMO I will play is Lineage 3 and this is not it.  I agree the target audiance is WOW retards.  The reason I don't like WOW players?  Simple You all with your whinning, crying and I want it now attitude have ruined MMOS.  The only game where I feel accomplishment is Lineage and always find it funny when someoen from WOW trys Lineage 2........... I have not seen one last yet.

NC soft is the production company behind:

Tabula Rasa = Fail

City of H/V = Niche game that they were smart enuff to hitch there wagon to Cryptic(some moderate Western sucesss)

Lineage= Marketed for the Asia pop (Western failure)

Lineage 2= same as above

Guild Wars=   wouldnt have 1/4 of its players if it was sub based..

Auto Assault = Fail

From everything i have read about Aion and NCsoft Western Track record i fully expect it to be a Western Fail....

Aion .... is that the name of a new bicycle or electricity company?

Listen folks... BIG mmo ?

If Middle Earth, Conan lore or Warhammer couldn't get a stable 300+ K subs after the initial launch, how could this game ever become big ??? (as in 500 K subs) in the EU/US???

I am standing in awe every time how people can think 500.000 players would be paying 15 dollars a month just to be able to play one game.. with absolutely  NO name recognition beyond the fact it is an ... mmorpg with quests....

Hell, I am surprised most of these games even get 100.000 subscriptions...

Take a look at RoM: a complete FREE to play game and look... it is already losing players after 2 weeks....

Look Zorndorf lost a star again. ;)) The inconvenient linked truth hurts on mmorpg.com

Considering that some items in lineage 2 were  sold for 5k $usd / piece on the blackmarket , shows something sadly. There is one guy who ebayed for over 100k $used in this game , hundreds for 10k .

About aion , i hope it won't be the same . Today lineage 2 which  is played less than Aion will be , is completely full of bots . This game even turned to be a money platform . The Gm's say they do their best to stop it .

We all know a huge number of WoW players are asian players.

Do you know how much asian players play Aion?

Aion IS the next big MMO in all places the game was released.
