I was just wondering how many people are serious about playing a free mmo. Whenever I try them, I just don't feel like I'm getting anything out of it because they are so obscure. any of you play free mmo's on the same level as you would a p2p mmo, and if so which ones? |

Well, i tried loads of them but i never stuck to one. Most of them get uninstalled in under a day. The only two i really gave a chance to and actually enjoyed are Perfect world and now Runes of Magic. Perfect world was good but at the time i was playing another P2P mmo. Still, i got to level 25, and it was pretty good.
I recently quit age of conan(Great game, but i am bored and i need something new.) and i have been looking at free mmo's cause i have tried most of the p2p games on the market. I am giving runes of magic a shot and i must say it is really good, definetely one the same level as most of the pay to play games. I'll probably be playing it until i get bored or something better comes out.
But yeah, thats 2 free to play mmo's that i considered good enough out of like, i don't know, 60 or so i tried? Most of them are garbage. |

F2p MMO generally suck imo. Even games like Atlantica, RoM and Requiem that try to atleast give people a P2p feel fall short. When I try to play a F2p im just not motivated. Maybe its due to not actually paying for it. With P2p MMos i'll actually keep playing a game if I pre-paid for it. Like giving EQ2 a shot for three months since I paid in advance. I'm just not attached to F2p games. At work a few buddies and myself discuss MMOs and tbh I would feel like a MMO welfare gamer if I told them I was playing some Alpha client F2p. Games like Eve, WoW, Lotro, CoH,EQ2 and WAR are just better then every f2p i've tried. Playing: EvE, Ryzom |

I've played plenty of P2P mmos such as LOTRO, WOW, EVE, FFXI, DDO and plenty of others. But after awhile I just got sick of paying 15 bucks a month and since I played pretty casually I decided to find a good f2p MMO. From what I've learned EVERY SINGLE F2P MMO created by koreans sucks. That is a fact. They are grind fests.
So after months and months of playing every other F2P mmo under the sun I have finally found one worth my time. It's called Regnum Online. I was surprised at first at how much I liked it since every f2p MMO has let me down. But this game is actually good. The devs took the micro-transaction payment system and made it work. They didnt sell the best gear in the item mall or anything that could influence gameplay. they simply sell player customization tools like dyes for armor and mounts and such.
So its actually a FAIR payment model. Hell I may dish out 5 bucks just for a mount or something. I could easily only spend 5-10 bucks a month on the game if I wanted or I could play totally FREE. Its brilliant.
Sure it isn't near the quality of LOTRO, WOW, EVE or any P2P game but its still damn good. Just try it. Its a RVR type game with some unique features like invading the other teams realm and such.

"Easy" only equals "better" for crack addicts and MMORPG developers. |
I have tried many of the F2P MMOs. I always have at least one or two of them on my PC all the time. IMO the F2P games offer just about as much as the current crop of P2P games do. Things such as low server populations, no originality, just copies of one another, and lack of interesting gameplay. So the question is...why actually play P2P MMOs...when the F2P ones offer the same amount of originality/gameplay? |

In the past I never found F2P games to be fun. However recently I started playing Runes of Magic and have quite enjoyed myself. But its hardly free to play. Yes, you can play it for free, but give it a go, and you'll quickly see why you won't want to. But you can keep the costs down, and certainly pay no more than you would for a regular P2P game.

Quite a few people play free MMOs. I've pretty much sworn off the subscription model at the moment, because it doesn't make economic sense to me. It's not that I can't afford it. I just don't want to pay $100+ dollars a year for a game anymore. I've tried and read up on a lot of free games over the last year. Although there's a lot of crap out there, the quality seems to be generally improving. So far, RoM and Atlantica seem to be two of the standouts. I have RoM installed, but am not playing it much because I'm beta testing a few games and helping some friends in LoTRO (got a lifetime subscription when it launched, so it's paid for itself and is more or less F2P now.) Atlantica didn't really grab me because of the FF turn-based style of combat, but I can't knock it for breaking out of the predominant industry mold. Perfect World lost its luster for me pretty fast because of bugs where I kept getting stuck even though there was nothing visible in the terrain that could have caused it and I had to wait for a cooldown to get out. It might be a really fun game, but that was my first impression so I didn't want to keep going. I didn't really care for most of the Aeria products I tried, so I can't recommend them. Most Java games (e.g. Dofus), don't appeal to me for various reasons. For example, w/ Dofus, I just couldn't stand having to move from screen to screen.

I've tried probably well over 100 F2P mmos and the only 3 that are still on my hard drive are Runes of Magic, Voyage Century Online and Dungeon Runners. Oh and one other that I can't mention because I'm under NDA. Runes of Magic is great because it's the only F2P I've played so far that the Item Shop doesn't really effect gameplay to a great extent... Sure the CS items make leveling easier but you can very easily live without them. It's also the closest to P2P quality I've seen yet in a F2P.
Voyage Century stays because I just like the whole 17th century feel of the game. This game captures it much better IMHO than either SotNW(To botty) or PotBS(Overly instanced). It's a wicked grindfest once you get your skills above 30 though. Also the CS in this game is required if you want to compete in the higher levels. I play it very casually though so I don't use the CS at all. I just use it as a nice little diversion now and then.
Dungeon Runners is a nice little Diablo type hack and slash and is good every once and a while if you have an hour or two to kill. The game is just mindless hack and slash with a good dose of humor thrown in to boot. As long as you don't go into it expecting it to be a serious game you won't be disappointed. It's one of those games that is just fun to play because it has no depth at all. It's another little diversionary type game that will kill a couple of hours if you've got nothing better to do.
Honorable mention goes to PW, Shaiya, 9 Dragons, Runescape, Knight Online and AO. All of these games held my attention longer than most but ultimately got boring over the long haul. If your looking for a serious F2P that you can get into and not go bankrupt buying items out of the CS Runes of Magic is the way to go. If you can play casually and not worry about "keeping up with the Jones's" than give Voyage Century Online a go. Dungeon Runners is a nice little diversion but is little more than that. It's a good game if your just looking to kill an hour or two now and then. These are of course all picked according to my personal taste and yours may differ. The only way your gonna find one that is right for you is to try them. They are free after all.

MMORPG Character Monuments ...When its time for your character to take a well deserved rest... |
I tried a couple after I left DAOC. Risk your Life, Ran They were awful for me. A game, but somehow did havnt any immersion. No Soul. Im afraid Ive been coodled and pampered by mainstream games for far too long to go to F2P ones again |
