No, Aion won't be the next big thing.  It doesn't really do anything new. It's got a few gimmicks which make it interesting, but at its heart it's just another level-based quest grinder. It follows the same formula as a hundred other generic fantasy MMORPGs.

Why have people gotten this idea that a game has to do something new in order to be a great game? I just came from the Chinese Beta also and I am yet to hear one person say that they did not like Aion. I dont know what next big thing is but Aion will be the 2nd biggest MMO next to World Of Warcraft.

Admit it.  Most of these people don't want anything new at all, they jsut want something else.  In fact they hate new, they just want different but old.  Just like how some 80s fahsions seem to be coming back in style.

What do you mean some?? Yesterday i saw an emo kid wearing checkered tight pants and yellow framed kiddy glasses carrying a boom box that was playing Duran Duran and Depeche Mode songs...Rofl

Anyways, on topic, I had a chance to play Aion back during the Korean release. I can honestly say the game was absolutely beautiful both in graphics, animation, plus the music.

The game is a dead ringer of any Final Fantasy game you've ever played so any FF fans should love it.

Only issues I can see a lot of us western gamers might having with Aion are

-a lot of grinding involved

-click to move feature

-initiated attacks will lead you to run up to your target

- must be stationary in order to attack (can't circle strife much),

-all characters look androgynous (FF style so which is expected...lol)

-and finally just about every ability I saw had a cool down..

Either than these gripes, the game is pretty awesome, and without a doubt in my mind it will take second place next to WoW as a leading MMO. (well that is until some of the other releases and if they're good)

And as for subs, I won't be surprised to see somewhere between one to three million within six months.

i played with wasd and you can turn it off in options <fyi>

if you strife it increases you dodge/parry if you back up it increases def if you move twards mob it increases attack

and did you play with char creator there is 36 sliders make your guy look more like a guy but you can make him look like a chick if ya want lol

and you cant really say if  N/A version will be grindy or not cause we havent got to play it CH version wasnt bad at all imo. they have said that there making the game for us not for KR

ya you beat me to the punch there.  Moving during combat in Aion is encouraged due to additional bonuses you mentioned.  And the sliders for character customization.. you can make a very masculine male..  and gigantic if you want.  You just have to play around with the facial sliders.

Not to mention to further customization you can go to an NPC, drop a piece of gear in and reskin the entire thing to make it look how you want it to.  Check here on "Customizing Equipment Skin".  You can also dye gear and socket them with numerous mana stones dropped from mobs in-game

I'm gonna say no just because every time the rabid forum fanbase declairs a game the next WOW KILLER the game fails. I call it the forum curse!!!! As soon as kids stop squeeling at screenshots before they even know what the game is like or about and proclaiming it the ressurection of christ; then we'll find our next great game.

Yes except it's actually an interesting question, asking if it's going the next big thing isn't the exact same as saying is this going to kill WoW? I don't think anyone really expects that, ever. Or at least not soon.

Also we have a lot more to go on then just screenshots.....

ya nothing will be a wow killer.  WoW is now iconic.

anyway, Im pretty confident Aion will pull the right gamers and disappoint the wrong ones.  Its an excellent game, has a much higher fun-factor than Warhammer, Age of Conan.. and Im actually enjoying it more than LoTRO due to its setting, art and animations alone.

Hi. I'm a WoW player, and your comments here are just plain ridiculous.

Typical wow player. I can't get any of my friends who play wow to even play a free trial of another game. As far as they car concerned wow is the way to go and even when blizz has screwed over their classes they QQ but keep going.

Dammit!

4/20/09 11:24:33 PM#156

OK, so maybe WoW-"KILLER" is a little extreme, how about wow-"competitor"? Is that easier to handle?

I personally don't think anything can really put wow to death, acti-blizz has too deep of pockets, too big of a fanbase and a long history. But can Aion or another hi-quality MMO really steal market share from them, because thats what big biz really competes for.  It comes down to YOUR dollars and cents that you budget to gaming per month.

Would anyone, that has spent MONTHS on wow to get all the uber gear really dump their account and go flocking to aion; I highly doubt it. But they might cut some other game(s) out to do so and keep wow. What do you think?

Sigh...I almost wonder why I bother, but here I am anyway out of boredom:

1) "I hate the look of asian MMO, I like Conan/SWG/[insert name here]":

A) The character customization system is so indepth there are people making their characters look like OBAMA and JESUS! Don't believe me?:

http://www.aionsource.com/forum/images-art-video-sound/13224-obama-jesus-aion-warning-large-pics.html

You can even alter the height to make your characters look like children, midgets, dwarves, whatever you like. Think City of Heroes customization, to the hundredth power.

2) "It's asian so there must be a grind."

A) The game is quest-based, and with only 50 levels there are many 'hardcore' gamers reaching level cap within a month, and at least a couple of more famous gamers who hit the cap within weeks. Mind you, they had like-minded friends to help them grind, and they ignored the vast majority of the content, but these people were more interested in PvPing in the Abyss and wanted to get the 'storyline' out of the way. That's fine, there are people like that, but ON THE DAY OF LAUNCH there will be over 1500 quests to enjoy, many of which you'll never even get to before you outlevel them, and there will be more to come. See Interview with Community Manager 'Liv' for information on the quests, here:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/aion/news.html?sid=6208227&tag=topslot%3Bimg%3B1&page=2

3) "The game is so pretty only high-end systems can run it."

A) It's already been stated every-fricken-where that the game was made with lower-end systems in mind. No, you may not be able to see all the shiney like people who can afford those uber graphics cards can, but that won't stop you from actually playing. If you decide you need top of the line equipment just to enjoy a video game, that's your failing, not the game's. Obviously, the better your system, the better a game will look, but that doesn't mean a less sophisticated one can't run the same game with lower settings.

4) "NCsoft is fail."

A) This barely deserves justifying with an answer. Not every gaming company is the behemoth Blizzard is, but that doesn't make them a failure. Lineage 2 is very successful in Asia and enjoys more than enough success here to sustain its updates and community for the many years it has existed. The first Lineage still has thousands of people playing even though it's outdated and crappy looking. Guild Wars may not technically qualify as an MMO, but as a video game, it was extremely successful and still has plenty of community; mind you, with the advent of Heroes parties are slim, but you won't have trouble finding people to grind those greens with if you so choose. NCSoft is not a failure. Every gaming company in existance has had an game flop. It happens. Get over it.

I am not a fan boi by any means. Anyone who knows me in aionsource knows I can be critical of the game. I have problems with the class balance (even as someone who wants to be a Priest, I find them overpowered), I have issues with the short flight timer, I dislike that the best gear comes from the Abyss and totally outclasses the crafting gear (making it not worth doing) and I don't care for the limited selection of classes either. However, there are a lot of things I ~do~ like about the game, and am at least willing to research and form an educated opinion before throwing it out with the rest of the garbage.

The lot of you should do the same.

Its a typical korean style mmorpg, it can only really be popular in asia, but over all their style of design is subpar to western mmorgps. They rely heavily on mindless grind, the method in which characters and made and customized is also typical of the korean mmorpgs, and in my opinion is not very good. It never has been. Items are lacking. It excels at art style, but thats just about it, the games themselves tend to be very very shallow and mechanical in nature. They tend to lack the "soul" found in many a western mmorpg.

How many wow players you know? 10? 50? 100?

You can draw a conclusion that the typical version of the 12million WoW players all behave like your what? 10 friends?

Maybe you have problem finding more adaptive friends, or maybe you have problems convincing them.  With your attittude, i will simply put you on real life ignore list, let alone test a game you recommend.

Go look up the multiple game guilds.  See how many of these move from WoW to LOTRo and onwards.  The Old Timers is one.

The MMO genre as a whole is a running joke considering a 5+ year old game is so dominant.

Umm, I disagree totally, and it seems like you only basing you're opinion on a couple F2P MMOs that have been released in Korea and your personal dislike of eastern style animation and story telling all together.

First off, western>eastern when it comes to concept and style? You have obviously not been noticing the impact anime style cartoons and FF style games have had in the west in the last 15years. Seriously, it's all over the place and bigger than any western medium at the moment.

Secondly, Aion is anything but shallow, the game's quality is enriched with some of the best designs I've ever seen in an MMO, if there is one thing I can say Aion has it's soul.

And finally, If you don't like eastern style games and animation, let me tell you right now you're a minority here in the west, nothing you said there holds any weight among other ppls opinions and even comes across as being a bit racist.

Well, my guild who has over 50 ppl decided to move to Aion, after playing WoW for 4 years clearing all the raiding content all the way from Vanilla WoW to Wrath (pre-ulduar) , we have played CN OB and everyone is pretty much in love with the game, not only that but I know of other "rival" guilds who have decided to stop playing WoW and moved on to other games as a whole, so I guess none os us is right really its more a wait and see thing.

And for the initial quoted poster, what is the "Typical WoW player" in your opinion cause I think we dont have the same concept of the typical wow player.

And no I dont think there will be any "WoW-Killer" (who brought this up this stupid remark in the first place?!), blizzard knows how to keep the attention of players by giving them something for nothing and feeding up their e-pen, and that will ensure they milk as much cash as possible until they release something else, I do firmly believe Aion will take the silver medal "easily" as soon as it releases in NA/EU (yes I know they are already the second biggest in korea and china alone but they havent released Worldwide yet so i think they need that before we give them the medal).

1) it can only really be popular in asia

it can only be EXTREMELY successful in asia. will be very popular in west too.

actually thousands of ppl are buying asian SSNs just to play there in advance

2) over all their style of design is subpar to western mmorgps

if style of design is marked by games like WAR, then u can keep that bullcrap, all yours. Aion landscapes and atmosphere can only be compared to LOTR, and its a comparision that LOTR loses...you really dont have a bloody clue,do you?

3) They rely heavily on mindless grind/ Items are lacking

a newcomer casual gamer will cap in Aion faster than in WoW. also for a new release without any single expansion, i find the content almost overwhelming

point proved. you know jack shit of what you'r talking about

1 million different people can point 1 million different flaws in WoW
WoW fanbois just have 1 reply: "you just hate it because its popular"

5 years and they have been mentally incapable of coming up with something better

I will still search and fight the good fight until I find the game to own all games.

4/21/09 7:42:20 AM#165

I've been waiting for this game for 2 years, and I've not been disappointed yet.  I can't wait for it to hit US shores and I have no idea if it's going to be the "Next Big MMO", but it's what I've been looking for.

Currently Playing: Aion
Trying Out:
Retired: The Chronicles of Spellborn, EvE, LotRo, WoW, VG, AoC, CoX, RO
Waiting on: Blade & Soul, Black Prophecy, Global Agenda, The Agency, SW:ToR, T.E.R.A.
Working On: The 5th Dimension (coming soon)

Gotta love how all of the "it won't be a hit" comments come with a prejudice that makes it obvious they haven't done any kind of research. Gotta love how possitive the feedback is from those who say that played and prove they've played it. Some games are hyped before people try them out, Aion is being hyped after people try it out ;D

Its pathetic ppl like ntrust need to use country of origin to assess quality of goods.  Fact is almost everything a Western eat and drink have components from the third world.  If ntrust insist he will not eat any food with asian input, he can starve.

As for the internet and online games, this is even more pathetic.  US companies have been using Asian talents thru the net for over 10 years.  Wake up ntrust and stop feeding your pathetic ego.  Without Asia, all the major IT projects in US will suffer.  You know how many filipino, India, Isrealean, Chinese, Korean programmers are hired by the US firms?  The best banking software are designed in the Netherlands and make in China, the BMW/Mercedes are the last major car manufacturers to move their DESIGN team to China.  Almost all home appliances design and product testing are make in China.  Japan and Korea are already considered high cost centres and are mainly used for project management.  US?  Oh well, US is a high cost but NOT very productive country in many aspects from manufacturing to design.

So bring your racist prejudice home, and start checking your underwear and refrig.  You can stop eating and wearing now.

Btw ... i didn't insult anybody with my post, which is oposite to what you did. Pathetic is your behaviour because this is game forum and not an arena to defend any race or country.  I'm not sure why you even want to speculate about it's potential popularity in the first place.  I do know one thing, there has yet to be an eastern made MMO to ever be a big hit in the States.  I've yet to hear of a single one that ever had as many as 200K American / European subscribers.  Sure, most if not all of them are very popular in Asia, but they do piss poorly anywhere else.  FFXI and Lineage II are probably the most popular of the bunch and i seriously doubt they even come close to 150K American subscribers between the both of them.

AION will be popular in the East as it has already shown.  I've yet to see anything about the game to make it wildly popular here.  I'm sorry, but a few minutes of flight aren't nearly enough of a hook to make it even come close to any Western made MMO numbers.  Other than the gimmicky flight, there is nothing about the game that makes it shine in my book.

Your opinion is false. It's fine not to like the art style, but it's not because it's not your cup of tea that the art is subpar or not of high quality. Anyone who has played Aion or been paying attention will just shake their head at you for saying so.

Cheers.
