I’m a big MMORPG fan since I first played Asherons Call. And I admit, as my first MMORPG, I’m biased towards AC, I loved it! But it’s dead now, I’ve gone back about 4 times, but it’s kind of depressing going into Glendon Wood where once you could see 40+ people running around and seeing absolutely no one. In fact most of the server is like that.

So, I’ve spent god knows how long trying every new online game I could get my hands on; Anarchy Online, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest II, World of Warcraft, Shadowbane, Rubies of Eventide…. Some are good games, but, for me anyway, never recaptured that feeling of Adventure and wonderment that AC gave me.

The main annoyance I have with most MMOs is they feel so small. AC felt HUGE! And I really don’t like Instanced dungeons.

I was holding out a lot of hope for Darkfall, but I’ve been put off that. It’s not even the buggy launch that’s put me off, I can forgive them for that. It’s that fact that (on the forums at least) the mental age seems to be about 12. Also, I like PvP but not at the expensive of PVE. PVE makes the whole atmosphere of the game. Having said that, when it settles down, I will give it ago. I don’t want to see something that’s good for the genre fail because a small team had launch trouble.

Now, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one that feels like this. And if you do, I say TRY VANGUARD!

It had managed to slip under my radar for some reason, but now I’ve tried it, I’m hooked.

The world is massive and non restrictive. And it FEELS big. There’s so much to do, you can just head out and go exploring.

The population is good, it’s no WoW but it’s certainly not dead. And I’m hopeful that a game of this quality will keep on growing in subscriptions.

The PVE is second to none! I love it, so easy just to get lost in the game.

If you’re in any doubt about trying the game and you agree with what I’ve said above, I think after playing the trial you’ll be as hooked as me.

I’m hoping to try and start a guild site now, maybe with a good Vanguard Wiki.

The only downside I can see is, if PVP is the main thing you want from a MMORPG. Vanguard isn’t for you.

I hope this helps other to give Vanguard ago.

I tried Vanguard a couple times, most recently went back for a couple months following the free welcome back playtime for old vets.

I only got to level 30 or so, but the game just didnt have the common thread that kept me interested.  Not sure why, maybe it was the combination of bugs, and unfinished feel (still after years!) that drove me off.  Oh yeah, then SOE decided to implement RMT in the game, and that was for sure, a final straw.  I wouldnt give any company that lies and treats its customers in an underhanded manner, a dime of my money.  But thats just me and I digress.

The game left me cold.  The tutortials for crafting and diplomecy were very bad.  The combat was over the top for lvl 5+ and one is not eased into the combat system.  Had no idea where to get better armour/weapons.  Saw a lot of people dying attempting to do beginning quests (thats a game killer in itself...as most people will just give up and move on to a more balanced game).  I was unable to explore most of the beginning island at all.  The game is erased from my system along with the Sony station.  Not even close to being in the same class as Guild Wars and LOTRO.

The game needs a complete ravamp and partial redesign. The game never quite reached its potential, sadly, and If i had the money and the man power, I would have loved to buy the game out and redevelope it, because at this point its just going to fade into oblivion.

Vanguard is the second game after early WoW, that keeps me thinking about it even after log out. I'm greatly enjoying it now and I also tried dozens of MMOs

Too bad SOE gives no credit to it. 5 developers is too small team for a game that is so huge.

All's I can say is ROFL. Sorry to laugh bro but come on its just like any game, if you where diying all the time than it was more than likly your own fault. Yes i know respawns can be a pain but play smart and there not a problem. Tutortials are fine they do require abit of reading ,but they explain how to craft and diplo just fine dont blame it on the game because you couldnt figure it out.

When I tryed the LOTR trail I had no problem outrunning any thing on my level 7 minstral. Outrunning two level 22 wolfs on a level 7, simplicity at its best. Oh wait I can see where your coming from no wonder vanguard seems tough to you.

By the way VG is indeed one of unique MMOs where you can die alot in noob zones. I started a bard in his native location and it was almost impossible to kill any 2 lvl creature while not many 1 lvls were wandering around. For me its not a big problem since I love challenge, but for those who like easy start - go to Island of Dawn. It solves all issues and gives great equipment

Ya it takes what 2 minutes to reach level 2. Look ive died in lots of games and I can tell you just about every time it was my own fault. The only times it wasnt is when I had someone elses respawns, spawn right on top of me. thats more bad timing than anything.
Alls am saying is play the game smart , learn from your mistakes and have fun. blaming shit like that on games is getting old.

I went through a very similar process.  My first true-MMORPG was FFXI.  Since I quit playing that, I haven't found anything that would hold my attention for more than a month.  Now I'm back to playing Vanguard and loving it.

I'd be playing right now if I wasn't at work ><

I've played a few MMO's and like most of them but like FB above I have a tough time staying interested in Vanguard. I played DAoC for years on an underpowered computer and still had fun in spite of performance issues due to my piss poor computer. For me, it's also  the combination of issues - bugs, performance, poor design. I've sent in help requests twice now due to quest bugs with no response. So instead of playing .... I'm hanging out here. It's a shame - I was given a 6 month subscription and was really looking foward to playing.

Performance issues can be fixed easily with a new vgclient.ini, for the bugs tho, its a pretty big game, just report it and you'll be sure they'll see into it.

Is this a download? Or do I have to change something in the file?

VSoH may be decent now, bit was shite at launch, It was released too early. I will not go back to a game if it is released premature.

It is stupid to reward that kind of behavior, I want games to be ready when I play them, not be dissapointed. And on that note I hope VSoH goes down in flames, as well as AoC, DDO, TR......any of them that was pushed through to make the quick buck.

Its more stupid to decide to play or not to play judging on how the game was several years ago. If the game is NOW crazy fun and gives me all I want - the last thing I care about  is how many bugs there were at release.

I tried playing Vanguard recently and loved it, it is absolutely a good game now. However, I did find a few things that I was somewhat upset about. The first of which is that the starter zone was generally me and about 2 other people, could have been my server, but i doubt it, because I was at the supposed, "most populated server". Also, even though I am running a very good laptop, I still had performance issues, my frames would be very sporatic, at times getting about 6-9 and others 30-40, and no I was not even running on max settings. Seeing these issues was the only reason I decided to start playing lotro instead of vanguard. Im still not sure if I made the right decision, but the frames thing got very annoying while fighting mobs, and walking around all twitchy-like, and the whole dead starter zone was a bit disheartening as well. I would love to be playing it right now though, just wish there was some way to fix the frame issue.

Did you turn on autoattack... seriously I've played every starting area and I can't imagine how you could die...  Well maybe if you just ignored the npc standing in front of you with the quest maker over his head and just ran off killing stuff at random....

Yeah other then the isle of dawn starting area you won't find the other areas have many people.  But think about it a bit and it shouldn't be a surprise.  People out level the starting area in a few hours and move to other areas.  So they might come back sometimes but mostly they are done with the starting area and moving on.  Since there are at least 5-6 starting areas other then the isle you really should expect to see many people unless the game was newly launched or something.  How many new characters are created per hour in an established game?  2-3?  Divide that by the starting areas and factor in the time and you can see why you won't be surrounded by people.
