Really? Sounds like once again, proper naming rules seem to have escaped the PLAYERS of Darkfall. Delete their accounts! They obviously can't read the terms they agreed to when they ran the game.

LOL!  So if they don't have any rules setup when you first create your character THEN they make these rules, they should delete someone's account after they paid MONEY FOR IT?!  WOW!

What rules?  The ones they created when they think that everyone with crazy names are HACKZOREZ?

Seriously, they can make up anything just to permanently ban people to make more space on their ONE server...

No, it wasn't sarcastic. Anyone with a brain in their head knows they are bound by the terms they agree to when they use a software product. Ignorance of the licensing terms does not absolve you from responsibility -- or any punishment due to your inability to know what you agreed to, for that matter.

EDIT: typo.

Please, please for the love of god refrain from posting until you get some proper education on the subject matter.

The contract you sign right when you join the game explains the rules for naming the character.  It's been there since beta. If you're too stupid to read a contract before you sign it, then that's your fault.

Here's a thought:  A company has 12 employees, two of the employees decide to right "**** You" on their name tags that publicly represent the company.   Should the company  A) give the empolyees new nametags telling them the previous ones were inappropriate   OR  B) fire the employees and leave room for new ones in their company?   Ya, I thought B was right too.

That's just how it is for Darkfall, or any other MMORPG game.  It's not just the product that represents the game, but also the community that plays it and makes up the population.  If the community is full of asshats, it'll get a bad reputation and a bad point of view.   However, when a company takes a stand and removes the asshats, then the potential customers see this as a better community to join.

Also, this tells how their customer service works.  Some companies do nothing against bad names, horrible players (those that hack, cheat, and/or total dicks), or help the players that need it.  With this kind of responce just against bad names, I can't help but think that their in-game support is atleast 2x better than most MMOs (which have a 72hr wait time for GMs/CSRs).

Big difference with people who BUY THE GAME and people who WORK FOR THE COMPANY...

This is how their customer service works...?  Perm banning people because they don't know how to code their game... I would rather have a competent customer support that would take 72 hours than one that bans people for no reason...

You do know that they are banning people just to be able to sell more accounts because it frees up space right?  Get it?

Don't worry, prow can move on to other games soon enough. However, while is conspiracy theory probably isn't true, the meat of this thread is. And that's not whether names like Illlililil or whatever are right, or whether or not they're all hackers, etc. It's that Aventurine is being a bunch of dumbasses for perma-banning such names (or politely telling the user to delete their character) instead of giving warnings or using another more standard form of punishment, just in case there's an innocent thrown somewhere in there who is not a hacker.

Inquisition: "Kill them all, let God purge the innocent from the flames".

Darkfall: "Ban them all...laugh because they can't come back."

Surprisingly, prow is also right about the flaws of Siphaed's example. When you buy a product, it's different than being an employee of a company. Darkfall already has a community image of a bunch of nerdy asshats running around killing each other, and nothing will change that.

They are banning the players who broke the rules for naming conventions that they signed and agreed to abide by. Nothing less. Maybe you should check the EULA before you do this.

Hmm, seems I won the argument and the point finally got through some heads.

This is awesome and I commend the devs for taking a stand.  I wish blizzard had the stones to permaban idiot people who name their characters this way.

There were no rules that prohibited them from creating names such as "IlIlIlIl" at the time when they accepted the terms.

This is just my opinion and should be veiwed as just that, an opinion

b. Player and Guild Names. Each player gets to select a player name. However, these names have certain restrictions on them. Guilds are also an important part of the Darkfall online community. So, the names of Guilds are also governed by the following rules.

i. You may not use any name that belongs to another person with the intent to impersonate that person, including any employee of Aventurine or anyone acting under the authority of Aventurine or its affiliates within the Game, the World or on the official Darkfall online web sites.

ii. You may not use any name that incorporates vulgar language or which are otherwise offensive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable.

iii. You may not use any name that belongs to a public figure, celebrity, or media personality.

iv. You may not use any name that is, contains, or is substantially similar to a trademark or service mark, whether registered or not.

v. You may not use any name that belongs to any religious figure or deity.

vi. You may not use any name that is from the Darkfall Game or World.

vii. You may not use any name that relates to drugs, sex, alcohol, or criminal activity.

This is the EULA which you have to AGREE TO everytime, EVERYTIME you log in to the game, they can change it at a whim, If you dont read it its on youl.  So you break it, they can do what they want, stop whining.

Personally, I'm glad they are restricting the names. I saw "Michelle Obama" the other day and rolled my eyes.

I don't know if this calls for a ban.

Since it's in the EULA, there's no excuse.

Sooo IiIIll is a fine name according to the current EULA?  And as mentioned before( and ignored because of the unknowns), what happens the "Illyria" or similar names that only use a small string of an I and L with no intentions to confuse or hack?  They are used very often in other games.  do they get banned?

Good for Aventurine. Seriously, they do not say ALL naming violations result in a perma-ban, just those who intentionally try and makeup a name that is hard for GM's to spell or players to report. The intent behind it is what results in the perma-ban and nobody in their right mind would create a name like ilLiLLIl unless it is designed to throw off GM's or players.

And besides, its in the EULA,....you are agree too it so they can do it.

Don't like it, don't play. Simple.

I thought maybe this picture would be a fresh on topic pause from 25+ pages of text

Note how the guys in white text begs for his life, while the guy in yellow begs for a rename. Both attempts are in vain hehe.

It's not even that complicated. One of the most relevant parts of the ToS/EULA is this:

7. Management of Accounts. YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT AVENTURINE, AT ITS SOLE DISCRETION, MAY SUSPEND, MODIFY, SUSPEND OR DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT AT ANY TIME FOR ANY REASON OR FOR NO REASON WITH OR WITHOUT NOTICE TO YOU. IF FOR ANY REASON OR FOR NO REASON YOU ACCOUNT IS TERMINATED, SUSPENDED OR ALTERED IN ANY MANNER YOU WILL NOT BE ENTITLED TO COMPENSATION FOR THE TIME YOU SPENT PLAYING THE GAME IN THE WORLD OR FOR ANY OTHER COMPENSATION. For informational purposes only, and not as a limitation of Aventurine’s rights, most adverse account actions are related violations of these Terms of Service or the EULA.

This whole debate is rather pointless, because it really isn't terribly difficult to distinguish the difference between legitimate names and names created solely to make reporting them near impossible.

Don't get me wrong, meaningless debates are just that, meaningless. But most are rather entertaining.

I'm not sure if other MMOs include this in their EULA because I don't read it but really, who in their right mind would agree to "We can delete your account for no reason and you aren't entitled to any compensation.". Especially from a small company.

Nobody would.

Still does not change the fact that it is in there, and is agreed to every time you log in.

Small company, not reading it, etc... does not change the fact Aventurine can do whatever they want with regards to anyone's account.

You may also find it interesting as to what you agree to in regards to Aventurine monitoring your computer while you are running Darkfall.

Cheers!

In qutie a few you cant make BS name that have the same letter 3 times in a row or stuff like that.

DF is just doing like aoc did, showing other devs that you can do whatever you want with a mmo, say it will have 3000 features, make something really shitty and the soullesss fanboys will still defend it.

So true, but unfortunaly ppl sick to play mall items games or 24/levelling games what option do they have? I play EU AOC and i don't see many ppl banned in game, just the forum is way a totally locking up anything they don't like, now about this problem with name, it really sounds like a blonde company is trying to fix it. The names ppl chose for their chars is really the last of the problem in a game. Plus part of their stupid EULA says they can do whatever they want? Maybe in their own dream. Kick it to a tribunal and the jugde will laught about that virtual paper or shit. But who would do that for a game.

Nobody would? Then they won't get much online time since every EULA has some form of this exact item. For example, read the Terms of Service when signing up for GMail. Or Digg. Or iTunes. The list goes on.

Your response to bagnol is not needed. He admits to not reading  EULAs so whatever happens to his account, he deserves. Issue resolved.

EDIT: typo.
