I'll keep this short(er then my normal posts) so it wont make much sense to most that havent played SWG.

So ye, I've been trying any mmo I've come across for a realy realy long time now, and while I deeply hate SWG or atleast the devs for what they did or dident do with that game.. I also realize now that 5-6 years after I stoped playing it, most of the elements SWG had is what I am aimlessly searching to replace.

I am talking about:

player housing, (and not the instanced apartment crap)

decorating,

INTRICATE unique crafting,

..oh the harvesters and factorys I miss thee..

Discovery.. always figuring out new stuff or obtaining or achieving goals and items that nobody else has.

Exploration

..Waiting in line by the starship transports (i.e the entire server couldent teleport to the same spot in a matter of minutes

a.. feel, to it. like you are living in the gameworld for a bit. -  not just watching x-counterstrike 14yrold's discuss eachothers moms.

(I was anti RP when I played SWG, but recent years development has made me welcome the RP'ers back, even if I might not be one of them I'de love to have them around.

Now I feel fairly certain there are no such games out atm.. ofcourse if anything comes close please do inform me, but I would also like to know if anyone knows of any upcoming releases that takes this path.

Unfortunately there is no such game.

Closest thing you will get is eve online with ambulation expansion which is yet to be released.

And then I think Star Trek Online will be very very close to PRE-CU swg. You should try eve online when ambulation comes and also STO.

Nothing really quite like it.  Some games have the housing/decorating, and combat can be found anywhere--but no other game has anything like the crafting/factories/decay/community/character skill customization/freedom that old SWG had.  Google emu tho.

welcome to the club!
i think eve is the only choice for you atm (no player housing yet)
for me eve is to corp based.

i hope fallen earth can replace pre cu/nge swg (release is not to far away) in the future
not sure about housing and exploration in FE but crafting sounds really  cool

My brother went to Ryzom saying it has many SWG elements. I havn't tried it. I enjoy EVE, and Conan.

Neither EVE or Conan are alone my be all end all SWG replacement, but both are lots of fun. No one MMO has been able to replace SWG pre NGE for me. I doubt 1 MMO ever will.

SWG was ahead of it's time when it came out. Unfortunatly the original devs couldn't fullfill the direction they wanted the game to go. SOE and LA had to ruin it when all they needed to do was fix bugs, tweek, and add some content.

Ye its a damn shame realy, I've long been wondering how someone can come up with such a good game and then utterly destroy it. And tbh I've never seen a worse case of hostility between devs and players either, so I cant be sure its all Sony highend managements fault either.. could be some medium level leadership replacement for all I know. anyway..

I did try Ryzom recently, and its charming indeed.

As I was testing it for the very reasons stated in the first post, it struck me as on to something, but stil not worthwhile.

It has a very friendly comunity, which often is the case with these secluded games.. and it has the crafting and the housing.

Now while the crafting is sort of customizable in that various resources bring better or worse stats to a final product, it realy isent on second look when you compare it to experimentation in SWG. ..so.. I'de give it higher crafting score then most games, but stil leaves a lot to be desired. for instance theres like 3 looks total of armor you can craft (not counting that each 4 races has their own 3 looks, and slight color variations depending on dominant resource used.

The housing is that kinda instanced apartment thing that alot of games has, and isent realy interesting in any way. may aswel call it a bank and access it trough a vendor npc instead of a door.

It further suffers to some extent from the fact that the people that DO play it, has been laying it for 3 billion years allready, and flood the market with lowbie stuff that is beyind a newbies dreams to create. so theres realy no incentive to become a crafter.. whcih leaves you with combat which is.. ok.. a grind. and I am willing to forgive that easily if the exploration/crafting etc etc elements where there. but since it isent, I no longer play it. hehe.

Guess I HAVE to try EvE then.. just been avoiding it for so long as I am afraid of entering games that has a majority of ridiculously experienced veterans running the show allready.

I do miss pre-CU swg. I was an Architect and loved the crafting and harvesting aspect of the game and like many Eve and Warhammer are my answers till i find the right game that will do it all for me.

I went from Pre-CU SWG to Darkfall. Not the same i know, but the most similar game experience i have found in four years.

Maybe Wurm or Saga of Ryzom?
