I would only take a wild guess that the very same game engine Age of Conan is running would be used for TSW.

So really I would guess that they will of course...

- Promise alot of things as every company does to get the hype go!

Then of course, it would only be more or less like Age of Conan with a new theme insted.

I can hardly imagine they would make a MMO that was PvP balanced or even make a strong PvE, hardly.

No levels? Have you played a game like Fable 2 and how long that took. Some point it stops.

It's pure idiots that believe FunCom vision. They give us a vision of Fable 2 in future, magic/combat/ninja sword, etc.

No levels, like Fable 2. Puzzles? Adventure?

Can you say loading screen loading screen loading screen?............. They want you all to hang on the forums for ages, they promise you cookies and warm blanket but you must realise that companies are like Coca Cola and "that other company you not heard of that makes nooodles!"... Okey?

They launch a new MMO title just to play at the trade market, stocks, etc. Hype it up.

But they don't have the knowledge of good artists and creators behind the game.

They have dreamy nerds that want to pray on WoW fortune.

Just to be clear.

Well, first of all, the decision about which engine will be used is not established yet.

Second, game equals people, and this game is made by a different team (most of the people came from Dreamfall and Anarchy Online).

Third, conan's engine is not that bad, but even if it was, again, it's not engines who make the games.

It's people.
Straight and simple.

You realize a game engine is a piece of software, right? A game engine does not "promise" or "hype" anything.

Then of course, it would only be more or less like Age of Conan with a new theme insted.

The choice of game engine does not determine the type of game it will be, either. They could use the same engine to make a FPS, a RTS or any other kind of game they wanted if they so chose. It's just a matter of modifying key parts to do what they want it to.

For example... The Unreal 2 Engine was originally designed for FPS. However, other companies have gone on to create 3rd person MMORPGs with it.

I can hardly imagine they would make a MMO that was PvP balanced or even make a strong PvE, hardly.

Well that's your opinion, and you're entitled to it.

No levels? Have you played a game like Fable 2 and how long that took. Some point it stops.

TSW is not the first MMORPG to have no levels and/or a skill-based system. It's a perfectly viable system.

It's pure idiots that believe FunCom vision. They give us a vision of Fable 2 in future, magic/combat/ninja sword, etc.

No levels, like Fable 2. Puzzles? Adventure?

No levels, period. Again, it's not a new concept in MMOs. Perhaps Fable 2 is the only game you know of with no levels. It's far from being the only game like that. It's not a new concept, by far.

Yes, the game will have puzzles.. Hell it already has some very good ones to get players involved well ahead of launch. People have been having fun  solving them.

Can you say loading screen loading screen loading screen?............. They want you all to hang on the forums for ages, they promise you cookies and warm blanket but you must realise that companies are like Coca Cola and "that other company you not heard of that makes nooodles!"... Okey?

Loading screens, forums, cookies and Coca Cola? What are you even rambling on about here?  Coherent sentences please?

They launch a new MMO title just to play at the trade market, stocks, etc. Hype it up.

No.. they launch a new MMO to attract players (customers) and make money, like any other product from any other business. All companies hype their products to a degree... it's called "marketing".

But they don't have the knowledge of good artists and creators behind the game.

They have released 3 games to date that have won multiple awards: The Longest Journey, Dreamfall and Anarchy Online. The first two have an especially loyal following. You think they could have done that without the knowledge of being good creators or artists?

They have dreamy nerds that want to pray on WoW fortune.

Anarchy Online, Funcom's first MMO, was out well before WoW.
The Longest Journey, a single player adventure game from Funcom, was out wwell before WoW.

In other words, they were established as a game company before WoW came out , and they are not "preying" on anyone's fortune. The game is *nothing* like WoW, just from what they've revealed already. The "WoW card" does not apply here. Sorry.

Do your research... This game has bene in development for 3 years, which is well before AoC finished their game engine. And if you played the ARG's, you should know that they've already put a lot of effort in it.

This game should be completely different from AoC.

Edit; I'm not saying they use a different engine, but they changed it. Or they should have changed it, as no exact the same engine is capable of delivering 2 different games. If you don't change it, it will feel like the previous game, with other graphics...

It doesnt matter in 3+ years . Why... the computer you are using now to read and write in these very forums will be different, if the engine is the same as AoC that's great dx10 capable and very easy to run on future systems 3 years from now. Now... on the same token we already are fed with windows 7 at june which means dx 11 :)  and thats like 3-4 months ! Point is easy to see , if they gonna use a new engine to accomodate  TSW at the 3  years in the future from now tech , i cant foretell future i am sorry, but if they use aoc engine on the 3 years from now to the future it looks very possible. In exactly 3 years technology changed rapidly. So if you believe that games dont follow and determine technology really think how many mmo's you can play with your previous pc !

Though I don't wish failure on anyone this is the same way I've always seen Funcom, plus the fact this secret world doesn't appeal to me in anyway. I certainly do hope for those who are certain to try this game they do much better than they did with aoc but that remains to be seen.

Do some research on DX11. ;) It's supposed to be fully compatible with DX9/10. Unlike upgrading DX10, which required some huge changes, you can even develop games for DX11 now, by using DX9/10, and upgrading it later.

In fact, DX11 is so similar to DX10, vista users will be able to use it as well! XP users didn't get DX10, not because MS forced you to buy Vista, but because XP couldn't run DX10, not without changing so much about the OS, you basicly have vista.

And right you are ! :) my point was simple technology changes game change , and because games change technology changes more , so to not stretch this any further i dont know which engine they ll use or which dx will exist then , can you see 3-4 years in the future? If you can enlighten me :) i surely can't ! well that's my point really.

OP no offense, but this thread is a joke. Instead of googling this out in a few seconds, you rather asked here. Yes, it uses the same engine. It was already confirmed by Jorgen Tharaldsen and Erling Ellingson.

Will play be instanced or streamed?

Ellingson: We're not ready to go into too many details here, but I can promise you that we have some huge environments in the game.

The engine we're using is the same as the one we're using for Age of Conan (though we are always improving upon it, and The Secret World will launch much later than Age of Conan so expect to see a lot of improvements), and that engine is by now renowned for the massive landscapes that we are able to render - from massive mountain-ranges to vast cities.

What other games have they used this engine for because in his statement he says this "engine is by now renowned for the massive landscapes that we are able to render" but I have never heard any praise for AoC massive mountain ranges or vast cities.

I'm certainly tainted against much of anything they say because of how I view the moves I've seen them make but I am no hardcore technological expert so truly wonder if this game engine is in use somewhere other than AoC or does he in fact mean that the above statement is about AoC?

While I think it is pretty early for people to be making claims about what this game will be and won't be, I'm pretty sure it will have plenty of loading screens between the different gaming areas.  Considering the game takes place in many of the worlds major cities, I don't think funcom is going to make a seemless replica of earth.

Indeed.

Thing is... I think people blow zoning a *bit* out of proportion.

I can understand the frustration of instancing common/shared areas.. That drove me nuts even back in Anarchy Online with the different starting areas (pre Shadowlands).

But, as long as the zoning is reasonable, it's not that bad and you get used to it.

-shrug-

That's my 2 cents anyway.

If you have to have a load screen to get from one large outdoor area to another, that is fine.  The part that bugged me about AOC was having a loadscreen when you went into the basement of an inn.. the room you entered was like 8x10 feet, and still they had to have  loading screen?

Given the way FC the company comports itself with regards to how it deals with its customers and its casual attitude towards the truth, I'll only be trying FC prodhucts at a minimum 6 months after launch and only with a free trial.

TSW uses the same engine. However i would like to remind people that the use of instances WAS A GAME LEVEL IMPLEMENTATION and not some sort of, the engine only does X.

And due to instance caps, even though you're just in a non-combat town inn, the people you're playing with on the same server, in the same inn, may be in a different instance, requiring a ridiculous shuffle to get everyone in the same space/place.

So now there is nothing left to bash in the AoC forum the psycho  Funcom haters have found a new forum to bash funcom. How pathetic.

How many of these kind of idiotic threads is the OP going to create?

This site has really turned into a sewer full of trolls.

Yes, they use the same engine as Age of Conan.

No, it's not the same version... it's using version 2.0 of this game engine.

Anything more to troll OP? /puke

When www met dot , they then stumbled upon Secret Society , wich happened to be a Guild , wich in turn told dot about the net .

You had a load screen because those were single player or group instances.  I could take the instancing or leave them but I understand why they did things the way they did them.

Must have been a really popular basement.

Do they hide all the booze there?

The only 'basements' that I remember doing that were dungeons, it's fun to exaggerate. :D Tell me where this 8X10 basement was ?

He might be talking about the small prison cell you have to enter in Tortage. Small instance with a single NPC in it.

Dreamworld.

Dreamworld is the name of the engine, not the name of the other games it's been used for.

And I'm sorry, but the engine is not "reknowned for the massive landscapes". It is "reknowned" for being the buggy piece of shit spaghetti-spliced code that powers Anarchy Online, and which also powers Age of Conan.

Funcom needs to change the /petition command into a general nano called "Summon Personal Jester"
with a 1 hour cast time and 90% fumble rate.

I keep hearing about this cloud computing thing and I bet that's where FC is putting the grahics engine. Right now they're investing in the weather balloon technology to get all the bits of code up there. Helium is expensive so it might take awhile.
