The 1st person versus third person thing is a really hot topic. A lot of people feel they will be forced to do pvp as third person because you can see around your ship much better. They want immersion (i do as well) and think everyone should be first person all the time.

I tend to like 1st person best. I want to feel I am inside the ship. I want to see the cockpit readouts and controls etc, that doesn't mean I don't like a cinematic feel/view now and then.

What I would like to see is a system that puts you in 1st person for the duration of fghts. Maybe when you flag pvp you are first person, when you are flagged pve you can be either??

If the radar system is adequate, there won't be any disadvantage to using 1st person.

Agreed..  I loved the 3d 360 degree radar that was used in the original game called Elite..   From there you can see everything and know where it is in relationship to yourself.. I do prefer a cockpit view myself, just like when I'm playing Nascar..

Tossing in my two cents here...

I really would prefer a cockpit view as well. Immersion is probably one of the most important factors in an MMO. Not that you CAN'T get it with 3rd...it's just that first-person really reinforces that immersion. I mean, imagine flying into a docking bay manually, and seeing it all from that perspective.

So yes, if this game skips out on first person, I'll be sorely disappointed. Also, I'd prefer that there be no way to have a 3rd person view. Only readouts on your ship (that are each different).

You can choose between first and third "ship" in the game. Currently there's no "cockpit graphics" when you're in first person view, though, as they're not done with those yet. Last I heard they were looking into how to integrate the UI in the cockpit view and how many different types of cockpit should be in the game. Having an individual cockpit for each ship with the UI integrated is a lot of work if they go that route.

Perhaps they'll go with something like 3-5 cockpits per faction, where a faction's ships of the same class use the same cockpit (ie. Quantar heavy fighters all using the same cockpit even if they look different on the outside). That would be acceptable to me, at least.

This is also acceptable to me. I am 44 years old, so my gaming attitudes may differ from others, but I am remembering games lik the first Elite, Wing commander, Privateer etc etc and want those fun days brought back but with the "modern" twist of live opponents via internet.

I believe netdevil can pull it off. Already  the video footage released reminds me strongly of my old favourite games from back then. It's just that all the video is 3rd person so far. I would hate to think they did it like that because the impact is lost when shown from inside cockpits. They obviously want to show the game at its best, so they must feel 3rd is their best.

Anyway, I will be playing either way, but was hping they had let slip how they would implement the choice of view.

Gotta agree with you. I am hoping to see some kind of cockpit view in 1st person with all kinds of radars etc. and I just wish it's as usable as 3rd person view. It's going to be a huge turn off if I'm forced to do all my flying in 3rd person due to better visibility - it feels like cheating.

That's ONE of the reasons I quit Eve, I don't want to point an click in space to control my ship, I don't want to be "outside" my ship when I explore the space. And if I in somepoint own some sort of bigger ship, I'd expect the cockpit to be something different than the starter frigate's.

You have direct control over your ship the same way in both modes.

True, but it won't feel the same playing "outside" the ship.

Whats the problem with giving the option of a camera view like other games?  Besides coding time. By the time the polls are taken and desicions are made the coding could probably be done.   thanks.

Coding time & art assets. Those are NOT cheap. But like said before, probably a few different cockpits per side are doable and probably too expensive to do a different cockpit for each ship. Remember a cockpit is a full 3D object with UI attached.
