At the Game Developers Conference still in full swing Frogster has secured the rights to further territories and language versions of Runes of Magic. The management team of Frogster Online Gaming has been granted the exclusive rights for all further European language versions of Runes of Magic for Europe as well as the exclusive licence for the for the Spanish language version for the USA and Canada. This means that the Frogster Group is now holding, along with the Korean licence, all of the licences for Europe with the exception of Turkey. In securing these licences, Frogster has risen to become the de facto almost sole publisher of the international blockbuster MMORPG in the western hemisphere.

In its first week of sales in German retail, Runes of Magic has simultaneously moved into the top spot in the GfK (Society for Consumer Market Research) sales charts. The German boxed version of the MMORPG leapt straight from out of the blocks to the top of the chart for PC games in the segment below 28 Euro, knocking the genre king, World of Warcraft, from the throne. Taking the PC title sector as a whole, the virtual fantasy world peaked in second place according to units sold among current full-price titles.“Although Runes of Magic is available worldwide as a free download, we have been able to create a very successful boxed product for the German-speaking market by assembling an attractive item and collector package”, commented Rolf Klöppel, Frogster’s Head of Marketing and PR, discussing Runes of Magic‘s chart entry in the industry magazine“GamesMarkt”.“Within incredibly short time we have managed to create a hype around Runes of Magic which is reflected by having 700,000 registered players already. Following on from the successful online marketing, we are now experiencing a strong impact on the retail market."

well of course RoM cant compete against WoW because its just a f2p game but anyways i would say thats an impressive start for the game. i for one never seen a f2p game became so hyped like RoM. i also think the game didnt hit its peak yet.

Do you have a link to this info?

MMO games would be pretty cool if it weren't for the people.

even though its a blatant copy, I think its a well done copy... They kept what worked and changed what they felt could have been different..

WoW was never a perfect game and even copies can improve upon the basics and make profit if they do it well..

Most games now are copies of an earlier game or borrow heavily from other games, as long as it continues to improve the genera this can only be a good thing

i personally dont find ROM a copy/clone of WoW as both games are totall diffrent.

WoW is based of an old RTS.

Rom isnt.  the only thing that makes the seem similer is the graphics as RoM has a very asian/animeish flare to it.

and WoW has the ugly cartoony graphics that are from WC.

but i see too many people compairing it to main stream games, when it shouldnt really.

each game is acutally diffrent in some regards even if it has similer quest page layouts or UI. as its almost to the point its impossible to make a UI that isnt similer to some other game. unless you flip it upside down and make it a scrolling marquee.. some where some how a game will have a similer UI.

the main thing i like is the ability to almost level to 30 on quests.  though the 2nd class setup is a tad annoying as you have to change gear... but meh.

its a decent game overall. the crafting isnt bad. some are complex and tiring cause you have to find/grind the crafting stuff.

its a decent time waster when you dont want to level. id say give it a try, but dont go to play it thinking your getting a new WoW or AoC should treat it like a new game and not try and pick it apart.

some minor flaws and errors but for a F2P its acutally pretty good

LOL

PC games below 28 Euro? How many CURRENT PC games are in that segment other than RoM? That segment is for old, out of date games.  What they "knocked from the throne" are the basic version of WoW and The Burning Crusade not the current add-on.

That's roughly what, $40 US?  I see plenty of recently released games in that price range when I go to my local software store.  WoW is selling for half of that on amazon.com.

games under 28 € = WoW basic +all Addons, AoC, GW +Addons, Lotro, WAR etc.

if you continue readin you will also see this point : "Taking the PC title sector as a whole, the virtual fantasy world peaked in second place..."

The fact that they took a F2P and appear to have made a successful retail launch out of it is pretty impressive in itsself.

If the German boxed version is selling so much, then why have they only opened one more German server after beta ended?

first its a fact that the box is selling so much so you dont need to write "if".

and second, im not workin for frogster so i cant tell you why. i can just assume that maybe right now they think the 6 german servers are enough.
