Amazing stories and even though WoW is a great mmorpg I can't help but feel it coulda been so much more if it was WC4/

Along with WoW  you are gettin:

Diable 3 and starcraft 2

then on top of that you are getting a new mmo, wow expansion and a fifth unknown game that could be warcraft 4 or a new singel player.  I'm sure when they're working on certain games they aren't taking the devs from those game to work on new project thus delaying said game.  Now they might have postponed D3 or SC2 to publish WoW but doubt that's the case anymore.  So why can't you be somewhat pleased that you get your single player games along with bonuses like a new mmo and expansions and a fifth game that could stll be a single player?  Sounds like heaven for you.

This leads me to believe that their next-gen mmo will be based on a current existing ip.

What does the engine of a MMO game effect. Iam not as knowlable with this term in gaming.

Also didnt Blizzard say at a recent Blizzcon, that the new MMO will have a completely different IP then past games.

And that Kalgan (Lead Developer of WoW) is leaving to join the New Project.

Nope, they already stated not too long ago it will be a completely new universe and not any of their former titles worlds.  They are building this new mmorpg content from scratch.

Just because they are using the WoW engine does not mean it is a mmo.... The WoW engine was a minor tweak of the Warcraft 3 engine, so it could easily be an RTS, or even another fps!

WoW is not a modified WC3 engine.  As with all blizzard games, each game has a custom engine built from scratch.

Well a Diablo MMO, or WOW 2 don't sound like viable options. I don't think they will create another MMO that is seperate from WOW, because it would compete with their own product. As for a Diablo MMO, they haven't even finished Diablo III, nor do i think they would switch from their traditional action RPG style to an MMO one.

A Diablo MMO would REALLY compete with WoW (two fantasy MMOs).  A Starcraft MMO less so.  That said, they are already making a Starcraft and Diablo game, so I don't think a new MMO would be either of those.  They'd risk saturating the market for those games.

I don't think we can say anything definitive about what it is going to be.  Could be anything, honestly, though we can say more about what it probably isn't (an mmo or an existing IP they are already developing).

Diablo III was already in development by the time the Blizzard North executives left (June 30, 2003)?  WTF?!  I'll tell you wtf... it's all about marketing schedule.  They milk the player base for all they're worth.  Yeah it would have been nice to have S2 two or three years ago when so many of us got bored of wow.  This summer would have been a great time to see diablo 3 when most of us would have been bored of S2 and ready to scream at the 3rd expansion of wow coming.  But no, they have to hype it and milk us to death with years of expansions for ONLY ONE GAME.  So because of this I get to watch painfully, 2 or three more wow expansions of the same crap recycled and pvp getting worse and worse--maybe if we're lucky have S2 this summer or winter in 3 painful race releases each year or so.  Diablo 3, what most of us really want, is probably still several years away.  They really need move to satisfying players with two recent games--say an MMO and an RTS or RPS at the same time.  Why for years do we only get one type of game from them--mmo?! Damn them for being the only decent developer for PC games.

Can you back up the information you listed?  Specifically when starcraft 2 and Diablo 3's development started?  I have been following blizzard for awhile and I have not heard ONCE them state when the development of starcraft 2 and diablo 3 started.

While Blizzard was completely suprised by WoW's success and forced to come up with many resources to support their growing giant that they didn't have, im still surprised where you get the idea about their schedule of developing their IPs.

Ok the pixture tx to Coffee is getting clearer. Roundup:

Blizz works on:

- SC2 (here in Benelux the game is set for Oct/Nov 09 )

- D3 (2010)

- Next expansion of WOW (2010)

- A new MMORPG for the PC with a new IP (2011 ?)

- A new project with the "engine" of WoW.

---  Some speculation now ------

With the latest information from Coffee, we can see that the latest contacts lead to a cross console/PC(?) game for the mysterious 5th game.

That makes sense: Activison makes games for consoles and they want to use the expertise at Blizzard to combine the 2. BECAUSE consoles use fairly weaker hardware than newest PC's, you could already start development with a Wow engine (which isn't that demanding). The 4th game was already in development for 2 years, so it has to be a PC only game.

Now my wildest guess  :::) The fifth game is a console RPG/Action game with heavy elements of WOW's combat system and rpg elements. A cross between a mmorpg and a fast combat system game known in consoles.

Wow - even the haters have to admit that - has the best fluid combat animations/controls in mmorpg's. Bring it to consoles with RPG elements and I guess you have a winner.

Microsoft is no fool either. Ensuring a dozen million hardware sales of the new "XBox" (if called that way) when they announce it.

So it makes sense. It all has to go rather quickly (2010/11), because Microsoft is losing market share in the console market, so Blizzard does already the development on the well known Wow engine. They will tune the product once the new XBOX is ready.

Any thoughts about this possible roadmap ???

An action adventure title based on the WoW engine for the XBox sounds like a good guess - so basically an even more FPS oriented WoW (that is fairly close to it already) for the console. Most likely in the WoW world as well. Extremely good use of content that is already developed.

At the same time they can launch the next generation MMO and start to migrate the PC customers from WoW to the new game. My only push-back is with regard to the next MMO launch date. Given the success of WoW I would be surprised if the next MMO is announced well ahead of release as is customary for Blizzard. I think the next MMO will be announced less than a year before release to ensure that the WoW population do not start to look at the next product instead of playing WoW - too much cash is at stake for that. Ergo: I would not be surprised if the next MMO is released before the end of 2010 and is announced at the next Blizzcon (or maybe I am just hopefull :p).

They already built a game engine for a console action / adventure game, remember it? Starcraft Ghost.

The only reasons to use the WoW are, the main developers on the project are ex-WoW devs or they need the MMO engines network code.

I still think this is their next MMO and not a fifth game.

If you look at the sources above it is indeed a fifth game and I follow the reasoning of Sikhander above (sometimes I do)

We differ for the fact that WotLK is a very good expansion which will get the usual boosts when the content patch cycles come (like Sunwell or the famous patch 2.3), but we agree on the style Wow is going to: a fast paced action game.

If I look around me I see indeed a lot of different kind of players in Wow these days. The hardcore PvP players still like very much arena's and the BG's players are still in love with the game and they await the MUCH needed PvP gear in patch 3.1. And you have a complete other group, those doing the Raids and PVE gathering gear. It is those last ones feeling left behind for "content".

But Wow is hardly a pure Raiding game anymore (although MORE casual people raid more than ever before - very odd).

Personally I am amazed people say they "don't have anything to do when "done" raiding". They don't play the other elements of the game, that's clear And with the intro of new content, I doubt they will change their attitude. You never bore from a good played BG or PvP experience if the gear is there as a motivator.

----Back on track though ----

The new console game could be a big success if they combine the combat system in the Wow world with the limitations of disk space on consoles, attracting certainly the PvP crowd. A kind of Role Playing BG's system. Don't expect much depth - lore wise - in that game as the console market is purely a "play 30 minutes and quit" affair.

Let's hope for the mmorpg guys, the next mmorpg on PC could then cater for the more hardcore PVE / RvR players (again introducting time consuming efforts like attunements etc...)

I doubt if the 4th "serious" game will be published in 2011 let alone 2010. Probably 2012.

------

Now Blizzard will not let those 15 - 20 million players slip from their hands (ex subs included), so expect "combined" subs solutions to all these games (from number 1 to number 5) : that's why they created the Blizznet accounts a few weeks ago.

The weakest link in all of this for Blizzard is their "timing". Always years and years of development. But the above could indeed be the road map they are aiming for. As a personal note I will not even buy SC2 as I don't like SC. D3 isn't my cup either. I tried it now multiple times, but it is too single purpose gaming. So I think a lot of people are only interested in games 3 - 4 - 5 and they don't even need to steel away subs from each other.

Certainly 5 diffferent gaming markets this way.

I was thinking about starcraft ghost too. But its an mmo that will bring both console and pc gamers together playing on the same server.

I think its really high time for that to happen, and Blizz may be the first company to do it!

companies are already doing it

all of SOEs future mmos will be cross platform w. PC and console, starting this year

Ncsoft is planning on at least 3 console mmos

Turbine has a console mmo in the works

kotaku.com/5015103/interview-turbine-confirms-console-project-talks-future-plans

Funcom, havent accomplished it yet, but are working towards that goal for Secret World and maybe AOC

all of this happening while Blizzard has *not* announced any mmo titles for console yet

if anything, Blizzard is behind on console intentions

I read the direct source for link

www.incgamers.com/News/15691/BlizzardInTalksWithMicrosoftAboutNextXbox

to be specific, Blizzard is in talk w. MS for the console after XBOX360

there are still no plans from Blizzard for the Xbox360 itself

my point still stands

most these companies were already planning console mmos before Blizzard even announced their nextgen mmo

Yes but Blizzard works the other way around.

While the others try to make console versions of their MMO's, ...

... Microsoft wants to listen to Blizzard to plan an interface to play RTS and MMO games on their new hardware console in development. That interface has to be there WITHIN the console (as added parts on consoles never sell the same way).

You could say they are searching for a Wii controller for RTS, RPG and MMO games.

That's far more promising for ALL future MMO's AND RTS games than cramping 30 functions into 8 existent control buttons without a decent input device.

Read the longer version of the article.

You see Nadia Blizzard is the industry leader in MMORPG's - something mmorpg.com posters are negating this now for the last 4 years.

Simply because the present day consoles - as stated by Blizzard in the past - fail to deliver in RTS and MMO games because of hardware limitations.

Very exciting stuff to think about as the interface these days is FAR more important than the CPU hardware (Wii controllers).

Still MMO's for consoles have their own limitations (short playing sessions - being hooked up to TV sets means sharing prime time with TV programs - keyboard distances - etc ...) to me it would mean a lot less RPG and a lot more FPS experience.
