I can't help but cringe at the massive amounts of posts with stuff like, "I played from release to about 2 years after, now the game sucks. The old UO was better"

You guys have -no- idea what you're even talking about. You know defines a vet in a game? Playing it for a long period of time. This same thing happened with SWG. Just because you started playing at release does not mean you are the all-knowing veterans. Vets are the ones who stuck around and played the game for what it was. Even today UO is more alive than 95% of the MMOs on this site. Even new games like AoC and WAR... you run around for hours and never see anyone. Hop on UO and you are again in a massively online game.

To sum up: The people who claim to be vets who played for a few years do NOT have the right to bash the game. The real players are sick of you wannabes trashing a game you know nothing about.

Anyone that played from release and gave trammel a chance can call themselves a UO vet. If they feel that the game took a wrong turn and decided to leave because of the dirrection it took after giving it a chance thats their personal opinion and their entitled to it. Just because the game they fell in love with was ruined and they decided to leave doesn't make them lose their vet status.

Yeaaah... I think you are mistaking "vet" with "old timer".

If you think spending two years playing a game means nothing, that's on you buddy. Opinions are special, keep them to yourself.

I'm coming up on 9 years total, and this game is so massive, I am still learning new stuff. I guess technically I'm considered a vet, but I prefer to think of myself a hitchhiker on the best damn MMO ever created. Yes it had it's and downs, but all and all, nothing else will ever come close to replicating an entire world the way UO does.

It would be more accurate to say that if you left right after Trammel, you experienced the very best of Ultima Online, and actually are a veteran of Ultima Online.

You are not a tortured prisioner of an impossible EA game design with two different sets of rules co-existing -- one with an optional bubble of invulnerability around each player.

The "game" is littered with neon trinkets, rideable pastel dogs, pointy eared elves, candy canes, ginberbread men, snowflakes, and ninjas.

None of that is an exaggeration, just pure fact.

The real vets of Ultima Online did leave after Trammel. I don't know what you would call the game now, but it sure isn't Ultima Online any more. Current players would be better to call themselves, victims.

Trammel didn't put the nail in the old-school coffin, anyway. It was a multitude of things; Trammel played a small role in that. Age of Shadows on the other hand...

People that wanted PvP still did so after Trammel - they just didn't have easy targets anymore.

I've bought every expansion UO has had and I don't regret it a bit.

At least EA didn't lie and use it's customers like SOE did.

If you removed the rules that Age of Shadows put in the game would still be extremely similar to the way it used to be. Trammel was only the beginning of the changes UO would see.

edit: It's a shame that UO is still one of the most free form games out there, despite being over 11 years old.

Dude, if you fight in a war for 2 years, you are a vet of that war.....even if the war lasts 100 years.

I bet you'd be cool with the people of the same time frame who said they loved UO and simply had to leave for reasons not related to teh game.

I played UO from release and quit after EA Games destroyed the game making it so very item and gear based. Most UO players went to classic cough shards.... So yes The old UO was better and still is.

I played from 98- all the way up to Mondain's Legacy, then I just couldnt take it anymore. I mean, AOS was bad, but after those neon spiky haired elf freaks showed up, that was it, I was done. I had seen UO at its best and watched the gradual degrade. So, yes, I am (or was) a vet of UO.

I know a lot of people hate on Trammel. Hell, I wasnt too happy about it either. I was one of those who stayed in Felucca. Sure, trammel attracted all of the noobs and foul mouthed kids to the game, but the loss wasnt all that bad in Felucca. A lot of the people I played with and against stayed because eventhough the server had been split into the two facets, the PvP was still good because none of the games mechanics had been tampered with..... yet. But the thing was, Trammel didn't kill UO..... it was just the first step down the green mile. But everything still worked. Crafters were still useful and fun to play and the skills werent completely gimped like they are today.

Then, eventually, Age of Suck came and that was it. PvP was wrecked and so was everything else. Crafting became useless thanks to artifacts, power scrolls and runic tools. Then it just got worse with every "expansion" after that....... I mean, seriously, ninjas and samurai? When the hell did the Avatar ever use ninja moves or dress like a samurai? I  seem to have missed that particular part of Ultima Lore. The UO I knew and loved became an item grind thanks to some morons who wanted to try and copy WoW. Yeah, that worked........ not.

I never thought the introduction of Trammel was terrible.  It seperated gankers from pvpers ( pvpers want a fair fight).  I had more fun pvping in UO after Trammel.

The thing that killed UO for me was AOS.   Thank God i was gone before the elves came, I probably would have cried.

Played UO Atlantic from 98-07 Stuck it out with trammel, aos, and new classes / crafts. I consider myself not only a veteran but a victim. AOS truly killed the pvp of UO, with new rules and items. Trammel just left the people who shouldn't pvp out of pvp. There was still ganking and easy kills non the less. I think anyone that played for a while before any change and left with that change can call themselves a veteran at the time. But I also agree that if you haven't played in 5 years, you aren't a veteran because youll know nothing of the game becuase EA changed it around so much. In 07 UO was dead compared to what it was in it's earlier years. I would only go back if they changed a server's rules back to the old rules or the population was where it used to be. But back to my point, Trammel never killed UO, just gave more room for housing, AOS killed UO,

I wonder what you intend to achieve apart from flaming.

Playing for a long time = vet?  Who says that?  And, does it matter if I need to be a vet by your definition?  Its a game.  I log on when I damned please and log out or unsub when its time.  There is no pride to be there for years, nor is there shame moving on.  Do you still hug onto your baby cuddle toys?  That really makes you a vet.

To sum up: People play what they feel like, people move on to new games when they prefer, and people can always talk about which game they like or do not like.  You have no say on who can say what, or who play what, cos no one care what you thin about, and only listen when you have interesting information.  Your views stays with you, thank you.

  Coming from a 10 year Vet ..

EA destroyed Brittania and RG vision ..

They shredded its core mechanics and digested its Lore in its giant puss infested writhing belly that hungered to make UO something it was not and could never be....

You are left with nothing of Brittania

                                                             Nothing of Ultima.....

Like being a vet of any game is bragable outside of nerdy lan parties. It always crack me up when i see people saying "I'm old school" or I'm a "insert game of choice" vet.

Nobody admires you because you are self-proclaimed old schooler or a vet except your equally geeky peers. Gaming doesn't make you a geek or a nerd..bragging about your online accomplishments certainly does.

heres your problem, their postings are their opinions whether you like it or not. and in 2 years people can invest a huge amount of time into a game, and some will log more hours in 2 years then supposed vets who play far longer.

Playing: Not much actively.
Games played: to many to list, been playing MMO's since 2001

You almost say that as if being a geek/nerd is a negative thing....  I guess for some people it might be, but I'm both geek and nerd and I don't see the problem with being either (or growing more geeky or nerdy by one's actions).

....BTW, I am a lvl 2901-00202 bard with an uber-leet +1 sword of madrigal malice and a extremely rare harp of heavenly hatred... I am a vet of blah-blah for the past billion years. Ph33r m3!!!!!!!!!!!111111

Im not calliing myself a vet. I played from 97-2000. I play trammel for awhile but it just sucked that the player base was split,. I mean come on think about games of today, they dont split the playerbase like that into a seperate land base. They simply make pvp and non pve servers, simple as that. And I dont think UOR would have gotten the wrap it did if thats how they handled it back then, just split the servers up into PVE and PVP and allow us to transfer. They did a piss poor job and thats why people hate Trammel,. So im not a vet then, cause that did suck.

I played UO from 1998 till 2006, all games have built new lands...even WoW did it by introducing Burning Crusade.

Deal is, pre-trammel UO was losing customers, you can blame newbie gankers for that...post Trammel the numbers actually grew...I stood in fel all time and only ones that left was people who used to attack noobs for their rusty knifes and run away when I came around...if you were truly a vet, you'd been there to see that.

Only thing that changed with Trammel is that newbies went to Trammel, pvpers stood in Fel, noob gankers quit.

AoS is what killed UO. It turned the game to 2d WoW.

I'm really confused by the people that say Tram didn't do its part in killing UO...

Tram and its lame arse power hour took being a 2 or 3x GM (especially in crafting) from an accomplishment to anything less than a 5x GM newbie territory.  Also the house placing wars, whether intentional design or not, was always great PvP and another profession one could take up.

Sure, AOS made the game complete crap but Tram did its part.  The downfall of the game began and will end in EA's hands, I still don't get why EA deviates from the Madden series it is about the only thing that company can do right.

I played pre-tram and actually quite right when tram came out, power hour made me sick.  Taking my skills that I accomplished over 2 years and making it possible to duplicate them in roughly a month.  I also came back and played the game about a year ago and tried it for a couple months, it is complete junk, the BoD system is a joke, insurance is a joke, elves are a joke, luna is a joke, the game itself is a joke...as said by the previous poster this game is now a crappy 2D version of WoW.  Funny thing is WoW's crafting system may even be better...that's saying something.
