Try both games, it is far better than talk about it here.

You can get Vanguard trial and I can also send you an EQ2 invite with a couple of benefits if you pm your email to me. (Recruit a Friend program)

Both games have unique features, but to make a decision you will need to at least play both games for a couple of days.

EQ2.

It isn't as good, but at least you will be able to pick a server without cash shops.

hows the leveling in both? at low levels will i be able to do dungeons and things like that to level up?

i prefer dungeons for leveling and i hear vg dont got many lowbies? do they both got dungeons at low lvls and is it easy to get grouped up for them?

All EQII servers have a cash shop of sorts as well. I think (and someone can correct me if I'm wrong) that Vanguard has something similiar to the station exchange servers and EQII has a cash shop where you can buy things like potions that help you level up faster or buff stuff, etc.

I have to say that I have had both games on my computer in order to try them out. I wanted a sort of "I'm about to go to bed, maybe I'll take 30 minutes and screw around" type of game.

And even though Vanguard (for the size of the world) is not really that type of game, I am leaning toward Vanguard.

It is a bit more serious than EQII as the high fantasy in EQII is a bit precious for my tastes.

And quite frankly the world of Vanguard is absolutely huge. I was exploring last night and was jsut having the best time. I never really got anywhere to actually level but the exploration was so much fun.

I don't really have that sense in EQII.

In addtion, I have all of Vanguard's graphics at the highest they can go and the world is incredibly beautiful. Oh sure, some of the structures look a bit dated and there is a junkiness to the feeling of the interface, but if one is for a lot of options for races and classes and is interested in exploring I would recommend Vanguard.

I choose Vanguard over EQ 2 without any hesitation.

IMHO, the only thing EQ2 does better is character's development (AA) and more high level content (the game is simply longer on the market), but otherwise Vanguard wins.

But this is off course my opinion. I guess you should try both, I think there is a free trial for both of them.

EQII.

The vanguard developers don't deserve you as a customer.

+1 for Everquest II.

Tons more content.

Large dev team constantly updating the game with new dungeons, gear, monsters, etc..

Plenty of players still, my server has people chatting and grouping at all hours.

Has several expansions worth of content with another expansion due out soon.

+ lots more

Thats a tough one. I would say vanguard, but when I went back with that free month they gave people in January, well, the game ran worse than it did for me 6 months before that. I was really enjoying the game last summer and had no lag, smooth gameplay, but had to stop because of time issues.

When I tried it again, the game had major stuttering. It was like it went 3 steps back, lol. I probably would have kept playing it after the free time, but the game experience was just so horrible. I tried it multiple times in several different areas to see if it was a zone or so, but it just sucked.

Hopefully that problem got solved, but it basically lost my business because it regressed. If that problem still continues, I would say eq2, otherwise I do like the vanguard gameplay a little better, especially once they get some AAs in it, hehe.

been playin vg alot today and it seems very sketchy and buggy, like lag almost but it isnt lag its just the game lol, very annoying.

one thing im really wondering is which is easier to find players for low lvl dungeons and end game content tdungeons/quests.

and does VG even have dungeons at low lvls or what?

Everquest 2 has more acttive community in PVE and PVP.

Everquest 2 has better sound production, shadows system, animations and character models.

Everquest 2 is more polished and deep.

Everquest 2 endgame has 10 x more content.

Everquest 2 has better housing system and more developed crafting.

Vanguard Open World is amazing.

Vanguard has diplomacy but it need improvement.

Vanguard flora and sky look better

Both games have interesting classes.

Try both if you can.

Everquest 2 is by far a deeper and better MMORPG in all aspects, but you never know wich one will really seduce you, so go grab the trials.

Except for Crafting and Housing - which i am not a fan of in general and can't speak to, I think this poster is dead on in his post.  Having played both, I very much agree.

I'm suprised how many people think Vanguard has better graphics.  Considering the game was released 3 years after EQ2, it's graphics are eons behind.  The animations espcially.   Some of the art design on cities is pretty nice, but to be honest, art design on both games is pretty lame.  And from a realism / technical standpoint, EQ2 graphics are far smoother and better.  It just takes a monster of a machine to run them.

Another game you may not have considered, but that is similar to both of these is LOTRO, except for endgame raiding, it does pretty much everything these games do and does it better.  If endgame raiding is your thing, EQ2 is VERY easily the glear choice.  It's easy to get to 80 and start raiding, the raiding community is very active and there is lots of content to go through regardless of how hardcore you want to get.

Reasons to get Vanguard over EQ2:

1.  if you prefer living in the stone age and instancing still bothers you "on principle"

2. if you like running around large empty areas just "for the view" (although I would get LoTRO for this, lots to explore, much better art design than VG),

3.  if you dig diplomacy ( i loved it, but there was so little of it and it didn't really connect to rest of game in a meaningful way)

4. you still have that "brad mcquaid #1" t-shirt.

(p.s.  I've been playing EQ2 for over 4 years, played both LoTRO and Vanguard for a couple of months, didn't HATE either, but neither did enough different from EQ2 to make me switch.)

+1 Vanguard.  It's what EQ2 was supposed to be.  Vanguard is supposed to be the "actual" predecessor to EQ considering SOE destroys everything.  Much better graphics and gameplay in my opinion but i do have to agree that they do share some similarities.  I would try both out and make your own decision, i know EQ2 has a free trial but not sure about Vanguard.
