For PVE server, Set and Wiccana have the highest population.

For PVP server, Tyranny and Cimmeria has the highest population.

Cimmeria is a RP-pvp server but you dont have to RP if you dont whant to.

If you whant to start on a pvp server i recommend Cimmeria since i heard it has a more friendly community then Tyranny.

I, myself, am brand new to the game so I don't know about the PvP and Siege's and whatnot, but I can say that I bought it for $15 and if I only play it for 30 days (which I will play it for much longer, I believe), it was well worth the $15.

This game turned out to be a great find.   Dont let these forums fool you into thinking its a crap game.   Its not.  It is very well polished and is possibly the best looking game there is.

For the first time EVER in an mmo,  I find myself enjoying doing quests.    I hated tortage at first but, it sorta won me over.  Now I happily quest instead  of grinding mobs.   Its a nice change of pace.   Im not racing to 80, Im clearing out the undead from someone's house.   Then Im gonna go over here....

My gripe with this game is how the characters dress.   Its not bad  graphics or anything, I am accustomed to fantasy.  So, Im use to seeing chainmail, plate mail, Elves, Dwarves.   AoC doesnt have that stuff.   

This is a fun game.  Main site prices it at 20 bucks.   You will get your moneys worth.

Edit:  Since you mention WaR,   I have a max level RR 70 BW on Badlands.   WaR is great game.  I loved it since release.   I canceled War when I got AoC.  

 War's OrVR is all there is to the game.   Its either you orvr (PvE keeps and Bo's) or you do one of the endgame dungeons.   At 1 am there is nothing to do.   .   That crap gets old at some point.  

Atleast in AoC when someone ganks me,  I get friggin pissed.   I find that bastard and I make his day hell untill he leaves the spot he ganked me at.    PvP actually seems like pvp again.

Sounds like exactly the same experience I have as a new player.  People who criticise it really have no idea of how great it is right now.

Misunderstood and thought he meant Cimmeria as in the land mass, jerk!

Level 15 as of posting this, and so far I've had an absolute blast! Decided on a Guardian to level, playing with a sword and shield right now. I'll probably give the Polearm side of things a try later, but for now s/b is treating me well. So far I've put all my feats into General, as I've read that Cunning Deflection is really good and the passive HP regen seems like it helps out quite a bit while leveling.

I've gotten so PvP under my belt so far. Been ganked a few times and I've had a couple of fairly even fights, and I have to say that PvP in this game is actually in an incredible amount of fun. Constantly moving, pulling off combos, sprinting when I need to, kiting when I need some HP to regen. Alot of fun so far.

On a side note, I was ganked by a level 21 Necromancer in the underhalls just a little while ago, and I think part of the reason I died is because I could not stop laughing at the obscene amount of zombies! Funny stuff.
