is this game to late to join and play? Have I missed to much to be able to get good gear and not feel to left behind?

Anytime will do, it's easy to level up quickly either solo or with a fellowship/kinship, there's only an expansion out with 10 more levels, and now is a good time with Lothlorien book 7 launch (out in USA, 24th in Europe) which bids new refined starting areas and quicker experience gains. You can manage PvE with normal gear and there's PvP only if you go to the specific zone for that, so good gear isn't essential to the core game.

Well considering I just started playing this a couple weeks ago with a few friends and already level 25 through casual play I would say no its not too late.

I still see people in the starting areas and all through out any town I have been in. The community is great and the game is a blast, I have no problems getting gear and if you do there are always items on the AH from crafters as well. Give the free trial a shot if your not sure about it.

Out of every 100 men, 10 should not be there,
80 are nothing but targets, 9 are the real fighters.
Ah, but one, ONE of them is a warrior,
and he will bring the others home.

Getting good gear and "catch up" isnt that hard in this game so anytime is a good time to start. With the revamped newbie areas and the faster levelling (for the lower levels) there will be alot of new characters around.

If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I started playing after MOM, and I too was a bit worried about being way behind the curve. Fear not my friend. the LOTR community is helpful, pleasant, and at all levels of play.  There are people in my kin(read guild) of all levels and the vet's help the lowbies all the time.  If you like "theme park" mmo's you WILL like LOTR. MOM reminds me of EQ, so......

Best thing of LotRo is that it doesn't matter when you start. Since the game is based on a huge lore, a lot of old players have multiple alts to enjoy all bits of lore they missed with their main char. For myself, after I made my Champ level 49, I waited for MoM and rerolled into a Rune-Keeper. With this one I'm searching for new quests/lore that I missed with my champ (and I'll get her into Moria and beyond as well).

Today I restarted again (lifetime sub, so I get lazy some times on playing), and my lvl 24 RK wasn't alone in the Trollshaws. The place was pretty crowded. Lots of LFF, Advice and OOC (GMs screwed up Ost Guruth and elite Orcs were swarming the place).

So as said before, you're never too late. Only thing you gotta do is get yourself a good / helpful kinship and they can get you geared on the stuff you can't make yourself...
One small hint: since you're completely new to the game, get a craft that actually helps your class. Somelee class should get weaponsmithing, and rogue classes should get tailoring. This saves you lots of money on buying gear in the future ;)

Pages from Sages
Trolls should stay in WoW. That's the only MMO where you're allowed to play one :D

Is it possible to level past quests or things to do?  Example:  A fun quest that you didn't hear about until recently but can't enjoy now since you're too high of a level.

nope, not possible to level past quests or things to do. Other than that first intro area, you can go back and do any quests you may have missed.
