War started growing, before free trials, after going down to 300 subs, and never had the population that AoC had.

www.uptowar.com/view/43-servers-shuting-down/15337.html

AoC dropped below 100k subs and just stabalized after being the 4th highest selling game last year.

In the world of failures Age of Conan wins by over 3 times ;p Failure is measured by subscriptions in MMOs.

War is just a better game it has more leveling content, it is focused on PvP while AoC has no focus, it has around 400 PQs, with many being well scripted.  Unlike Funcom who focused on an expansion, Mythic worked on fixing the game..so it is no wonder why Mythic is doing better today than AoC.

AoC plays and feels more like a F2P game after tortage, so I'm wondering where all the money allocated to develop age of conan went, they said they lost 33 million, but it seems more like a fraud. maybe million dollar bonuses to all or something.

AoC is focused on both the PvE and PvP aspect, whereas War clearly has chosen one path (to lure in the PvP players from WoW).

War plays and feels like a F2P game the minute I stepped outside the chaos portal (no it doesn't, but I just want to be as reflective as you atm). Horrible animations, non existand emotes, sub par music and sounds (the music on the character selection screen reminded me of age of empires... shouldn't it remind me of something more like an epic war going on or whatever), the combat is the same old same old (you stand still in one place and spam 1-9) with no skill involved (the gear is the ones doing the talking), the mapping is average, and what I saw of player interaction was when people banded up to zerg another group of people, which was incredibly boring partaking in. Did some scenarios, got stoked that I got easy access to armor, then I got bored of the grind.

I still must admit that if I werent so insanely bored of WoW, and the way WoW plays, I might actually have enjoyed Warhammer to a certain degree. But after playing AoC, I am getting so sick of seeing mediocrity, that it bores me to tears. AoC is going somewhere, but what about Warhammer? Adding new classes that were cut and calling it a free expansion. That really made me laugh. I guess you can't wait until the huge expansion where War implements 4 NEW RACIAL CITIES where you can grind other players in epic perpetual grind warfare. Did I mention grind? It doesn't seem like War is doing anything new with their game.

The game just isn't for me, but I wish it and it's fanbois GL. The more MMO's to choose from, the better.

I like beer, you like wine. Trying to tell me how much better wine is isn't going to work as I have an aquired taste for good mature lore, a combat system that doesn't make me want to gouge my eyes out, fun PvE and PvP encounters, decent crafting and guild cities. And it's all getting better, and better, and better...

I get to curbstomp people who try to gank me, what do you in War get to do? Stand still and spam 1-9 till he drops unconscious with the same unconscious emote you always see from that race/class.

Seems to me neither has failed just yet, though the release of AoC was messy.  I was there for that and very disappointed.   The bait and switch involved with fantastic Tortage and then very very poor content after that was just sad.   Warhammer did a lot better in that respect.

By the by, standing still doesn't work so well in Warhammer what with all the positional attacks . . .  Plus LoS rules and such often reward movement in rvr.  I like the music and the graphics just fine, but do wish they had a few more emotes in Warhammer.  That said, they do have some anyway.

As far as I can tell, the Slayer was never cut.  They had in fact assured people that the Slayer would not be part of the game because of the Warhammer RPG  developers wouldn't agree to it, but that changed.

I'm thinking about revisiting AoC.  There was a lot to like about it, though I find it funny how you couldn't be very Conanish in the game.  Like Conan would give away gems he had cut out of Alligators to some merchant for a few measely gold . . .

Hopefully both games will continue to get better.   Warhammer has been fun as far as I'm concerned, and as long as they have one good server, I'm happy :)

Don't take my post too seriously Akopian ;) I just felt like beeing as reflective as the guy I was responding.

I was also disappointed by the traditional way Funcom chose to take AoC, and I do believe that the result was quite different than what Funcom had in mind for their game. A lot of the features that were added into AoC seemed to be last minute attempts on filling out the game tbh. After nearly one year, this is starting to really shape up though, and hopefully Funcom will choose to take AoC into new grounds and make AoC more true to it's lore (more focused on exploring and generally living like they would in the Hyborian age). I really hope so, but I don't know, after seeing Blizzard violate the previously mature themed Warcraft franchise.

The things people do for money and subscription numbers...

Financially? I don't know about that and I don't really care that much either.

But through my own definition, AoC didn't fail more than WAR.

AoC was in worse shape in many ways but at least it felt like they had some genuine ambition and they attempted some innovation. It still sucked but I think there was a love for the game somewhere in that mess. With WAR I just felt like it was a piece of uninspired left hand work from A to Z. Or to put it differently, AoC felt like unfinished mess while WAR felt just dirt cheap.

They both came out bad so I choose to judge them on my perception of intention and I'm pretty sure WAR got AoC beat for cynisism.

Led Zeppelin indeed..

Edit: Oh I forgot to mention that Dead Man is one of my favourite films 8)

Love the MMORPG concept, but sick to death of M.M.O. Repetitive Pointless Grinds..

Heh, well put.  I agree.  That's why I feel AoC has decent potential, if they can ever finish it, while WAR will probably always be lacking something integral at its foundation, even if they ever do manage to get it polished up.

Exactly. The fact AoC offers two avenues of gameplay with PvE and PvP, while WAR's PvE is weak is the main concern.

When all the PvP RvR is all said and done, and players want to do something else, this is where AoC wins.

Cheers
