What is it with some of you? Is life so serious to you that everything else must be taken as serious? Remember where this forum is? It is at a gaming website. Say it one more time. A gaming website. Not all of us come to a "gaming website" to discuss politics. Some of us get tired of discussing religion, politics, taxes, governments. Some of us like to discuss light hearted things like music, funny pictures, funny news stories, games, gaming, weird stuff, unusual stuff, unique stuff...why does everything have to be so serious on ths forum all the time? Please enlighten me. Also, nobody forces you to read another posters threads they start...there is no guy standing behind you holding a gun to your head saying, "READ IT NOW!" Here is a tip. One I regularly practice here myself. See a thread that doesn't interest you or you think is going to be silly and not serious enough a topic to garner you attention...don't read it. You'd be amazed at how well that works. ![]() |

I think a lot of times its just whats on peoples minds/what just happened so people want to talk about it. Then again not all topics are serious its just right now people are a lot more free with their personal thoughts then usual I think. |

Absolutely! It's serious or nothing on this forum. In fact, in order to make sure everyone adheres to this "serious" rule, I am hereby appointing myself "The thread enforcer". I personally will decide which threads meet the serious criteria and which ones are considered "too silly" to be responded too. If so, I will say so and no further posting will be allowed on those that don't cut muster. So be on your guard.
Btw, for anyone out there who thinks I am being serious...you really need to lighten up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tK6YIAX1jg |

I could post about my physical problem I've had since I lost some weight. I went from about 205 pounds to 180 pounds. While I weighed 200 or so I never had this problem. Now that I'm down to 180 I have a major physical problem. i now have belly button lint. |

If you noticed, it's usually the same 4-5 people starting the political threads around the clock. So it isn't that most people are too serious, it's just that most people aren't creating as many threads as the few who practically work here around the clock. |

I agree. The teen angst is getting old. However if i see another hello kitty or lolcatz thread i think i will go and off myself. |

I posted this because some poster jumped all over one of my threads calling it idiotic. What pisses me off the most about her statement was she didn't even bother to read the thread. You know if you are going to jump into a thread and discuss it, at least have the curtesey to read through the thread to see what is being said. OMG. You know what I am going to do now? I am going to get baked. Get a shower. Get dressed. Go dance. Make a few bills. Get drunk and then I am going to go over to Jess's house and have mad sex. He'll love me for it. Then we'll head to the coast and stay all weekend long since I do not have to work the rest of the weekend. Yea me! ^_^ ![]() |

/shrug I would love nothing more than an non serious offtopic form but those days died off about 4 years ago. I tried to create a seperate forum for politics and religion only back in July but the mods shot it down saying there wasn't enough religious or political topics to contain its own forum (although I disagree). Now, I just roll it. People wanna talk politics Ill talk politics. If i see someone in government doing something stupid (majorly pimpled ass stupid) I will talk about it. I used to try to not get involved in politics but since today's current events centers around it, its a topic that is discussed often. I dont ever create religious threads. Ever. I was a priest. I did my time. I have no desire to debate it. I think the only time I got involved in a religious thread was back in the creation vs evolution debate in June. But if I see an off topic forum bending towards being non serious, I have absolutely no problem ebracing silliness like we did back in the day |

Hah, I am an asshole and I still won't say it. I think I'm past it all now. I'll now and again throw in my lewd comments and then be off on my merry way doing whatever it is I'm doing. I no longer post in the religious posts or the political ones and I've started to filter the other ones more and more. I now realize once I read the posts that in some I just have nothing to add to the conversation and I move on, or I find myself getting mad only to figure out that I'm getting mad over nothing.
It's why I like the SPAM forum. I can do my stupid spamming, and my silly humor and nobody bats an eye. I used to read The Pub in the general discussion section but I've even stopped going there. Now all I do is skim this section and the SPAM section and go do something more productive like make breakfast or dinner depending on what time it is. No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga- |

The off topic section contains serious and non-serious topics. The country and world are in a transitory period of banking bail-outs with banking consolidations. The outcome of this transition will have profound, and permanent, effects on people's standard-of-livings and purchasing power. People will see a substantial reduction in their standards of living; they have already lost their (1) house, (2) job, and (3) other.
It is a very, very serious transition. Underestimating it, ignoring it, or even pretending this is "natural" or something will be the equivalent of stupidity on the level of taking-away your own rights to "save civilization" or your own marriage. People are dumb enough to take-away their own rights in the hope that it will help their own marriage. This is serious.
Some people cannot handle the transition, but they will ... pay for it. On that note, I would be more than happy to discuss, as I have today --e.g., discussing what to do with a million dollars or purchasing a new PC for gaming-- any issue. |

Call me elitist but the reason it's annoying is because it encourages more of that kind of activity. The off - topic is, in general, being used by the same people. It's almost a community in itself, away from the general section, and i personally don't want to see that community ruined because more and more people create "crappy" threads. I'd like to remind you that this is a forum, not an IRC chat room. |

You make a good point.
The irony is that it is a lot easier to justify a "serious" topic than a "non-serious" topic.
If we had a proliferation of "non-serious" topics, the ability to generate and participate in any intelligent conversation on the important issues of the day would seem queer, unusual, perhaps even offensive to some. Yes. Offensive. People, on a diet of bad movies and myspace, would literally be offended by the discussion of controversial issues ... not only because the issue is controversial but because -gasp!- we are discussing them. Some people, many people, are reared in an environment from birth to adulthood in which having a disagreement is "bad." That is dangerous, especially in a democracy; you can disagree without being disagreeable, which we do every day. Give me debate. Give me discussion. Hell, even give me heated debate. |

There was a time when the serious topics on this forum were talked about in a serious but light hearted way. I remember a certain poster name ModJoe (for example) who made very serious points but did it in a witty comical way. There were others like him too that were really good at pointing out peoples inconsistencies in a way that was hilarious. And then there were others opinions that I could not wait to read (like another poster named Reavo, and then there was AlexAmore, etc.). I logged on every time hoping to see what they had said because they seemed to have a different slant on things that made me think. Something has changed. That feeling is gone now. I even have trouble doing that kind of thing myself here now. But as far as serious topics go, just because we play games does not mean that we are a bunch of weirdo freaks that can't have a serious discussion about things. I like to think that whatever it is that draws us to the same hobby also creates this type of bond between us that goes deeper in interests. We might have difference of opinions, but I think our interests in things that draw those deep opinions is pretty darn close. I want that old forum feeling from a few years ago back. They were good times. Interesting times. And a lot more interesting than conversations about PS3 vs 360 or who won the grammys or whatever else might seem important but really is just a distraction for us in these troubled times. I like it when we can recognize the problem, get it out in the open, and simultaneously show that we are supporting each other through humor while we get through it. Sort of like when you watch the late night t.v. shows and hear hosts like Letterman or Leno or O'Brian rip into the politicians who are acting like idiots and help get us through this crap together. =============================== |
