I don't mind the concept really but we need more hands on before we can really have a informed opinion. But I really interested on space battles how big can they get? Can we have a huge clash between federation and klingons of 50-100 ships or more in the same area? That would make up for some flaws in the game if this is doable. Plus they have that first-person element to the game as well.

Personally I much rather get NPC's to man different stations and distribute points to the areas I think are the weakest or purchase certain people of quality. I think that is a decent concept. I really want to know how they are going to handle player death?

(full time anyhow) Looking past surface value of what the premise of the game is, I don't think it's an unreasonable assumption that this is a single player game. This is in evidence by the misspelling of the title of their own game. Sadly, this is becoming a more common mistake these days.

It's also a coincidence that games with misspelled titles are proving to be massive single player games.

What misspelling is that?

The propper spelling for the game being produced is WoW Trek Online. This is a common occurence these days.  I first noticed after playing Mythic's latest release, that the title on the box, websites and on the disk was misspelled. The propper spelling is WoWhammer.

Also on the horizon is WoW Wars: The Old Republic,(printed as Star Wars: TOR)  and WoWGate Evolution. (prinyed as JumpGate Evolution)

So you mean us and the fans of TOR have to look forward to the dreadful prospect of playing online with millions of others? Sounds like fun to me.

Lol i hope you are right. If  the game has half the subs as WOW it will be a good thing.

The difference is the lore in EvE supports single player ships. Group the ships together and you're in MMO land. The lore of Star Trek, generally speaking does not support single player ships.  Its counter to what the Star Trek experience is for a lot of people.

Who says you have to group together to be massive?  I've seen massive groups of single people.  Ever been to a mall?  Massive groups of single people doing their own thing at the same time in the same place.

I'm sure you have solo'd in a mmorpg.  What are you doing?  You're a single person running around in a massive group of people doing your own thing.

The thing is, you have this small group of activists that miss the old days when you were forced to group together in order to advance in the game. They don't realize that those days are over because developers learned long ago that type of system is not popular and becomes old real quick for players that have lives outside the virtual world. Many of these people miss the old days of being superior to others because they spent all their time in the gaming world and thus had an advantage they could use to exploit or bully others with.

What I find most disgusting with these people is that they already have the option to group together in all these games if they want to. It's just not forced on others. They can form guilds and do whatever their imaginations desire in groups. Maybe they aren't finding it easy anymore to find friends in game without the forced aspect, I don't know. But it's real disengenious of them to say that social and group aspects aren't in games anymore when they very much are.

So in Star Trek Online:

Captain Kirk (Picard, Sisko) is a PC

Spock (Data, Riker, Chakotay) is an NPC

McCoy (Crusher, Bashir) is an NPC

Sulu, Chekov, Uhura, Chapel, Rand, Troi, LaForge, Odo, Seven of Nine, and all of the redshirts are NPCs

And this is a good thing ??????????

STO takes place 30 years after Nemesis so all the above people you mentioned are either in their graves or retired.

He was, I am sure, making a point about the legacy of Trek and how it is represented in STO. You can include Janeway and Chakotay and Tuvok and Seven of Nine and The Doctor and Paris and Kim and Torres as well.

So he is saying that STO will just the The Captain. The lesser roles are just NPC, and that goes agaisnt the teamwork and crew mentaltiy of Trek in general. Cryptic should have tried harder to make STO a crewed game.

I love people that read text, but don't read context. Honestly, you completly missed his point, why not reread it, formulate another opinion, and then edit your post.

Who exactly would want to be a member of the crew?  Maybe 1 out of a 1000 people?  Only the real RP people I'm sure.

The result would be the same (NPC crews with player captains).  So why waste time and money developing features that noone will use?  The resources could be used in much better ways IMHO.

Easy. Ships above a certain class size require x number of players to pilot. Posittions can be filled either by npc's or other players. Skill of the npc's determined by level/skill of the captain. Stations crewed by players receive a small bonus to whatever it is they do.

The upshot would be that you can captain small craft on your own or captain larger ships with either npc's or a player crew.   That would be (imo) a dynamic of an MMO that caters to lots of different kinds of players. The fact they could have gone this or some other route and chose not to is why people say its a single player game with multiplayer rather than an MMO.

Someone hire this guy.  Apparently these ideas are hard to come by at Cryptic, Adventurine, Funcom, SOE...

Did it all the time in SWG...if you are playing a multiplayer game, you do something only some kids learn how to do - take turns.  It was fun running the weapons systems, shield systems and droid programs, or repairing the ship- yelling over Vent "I can't repair it quick enough, evade!"

Sounds absolutely boring. Thank God it'll not be like that in STO.

Well,

Sounds like I'll DEFINATELY be giving this game a pass....limited use of ship interiors, your ship as avatar in space and no multi-player ships available. I'm sure that has appeal to some people...but for me.. I might as well be playing Solitare or Minesweeper.

They come on my computer for free...and sound just about as exciting as this game does at the moment.

I like the design.  I'm sick and tired of being dependent on a bunch of jerkwads in order to have fun.  I group WITH other people IF and WHEN I want to.  It is exactly this reason why I don't like and don't do raids.  I like playing in a game world with other people, but I do not like being forced to group with them in order to get even the basics, let alone the fun stuff done.

Cudos to Cryptic for seeing that most of us are not freakish geeks on power trips who expect everyone else to fall in line with their wierd play style.

Well, if the ONLY people that are willing to let you group with them are "freakish geeks on power trips"......

... As they say, THAT could be your problem right there!

Strangely I've never had a problem finding nice, fun, mature people to hangout with in pretty much any MMO I've tried.

I don't know, maybe it's my bright white teeth or fresh minty breath that does it..... perhaps you might consider switching to Trident?

Then again, I'm one of those "weirdo's" who actualy likes people.... I even <gasp> occasionaly socialize with them.

So this is Eve W/O any of the things that make Eve good... and star trek painted on the hull? No thx.

Call me when they get off their butts and out in ship crews.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

So go ahead and socialize with them. Just don't force others to do the same and everyone should be happy. Also, stop with the "your ship is your avatar"  because that is a flat out lie and you know it.

Next time try reading ALL the words..... "your ship as avatar in space"..... what part of this is a lie? Or are you trying to tell me that you do not play from the perspective of your ship when moving through space... because that's certainly not the impression they give from reading thier material.

Flying around space is not all you will be doing. If it was you wouldn't have access to the large customability that will be available in creating your character. Your character will be seen more often than not because you WILL see the interiors of ships and stations when you are doing missions. You just won't have free roaming capablitlities at launch. For goodness sakes watch the in-game video they did a few months ago. You will be doing a lot of stuff in space, inside ships and stations and on land.

Actually just about everything is right on track an in the exact right direction  toward this being an extremely fun Star Trek game to play.

Flying around in space is or at least SHOULD BE a very large part of what goes on in a Star Trek game.... and in that mode your avatar is your ship.

Furthermore, the "missions" that you mention are instanced and scripted right?  (Not going to even address the full party of NPC crew you can bring along to do the missions with). Put's a pretty big damper on anyone that's interested in the social interaction/RP aspects of a Star Trek MMORPG...... Not to mention the actual FEEL of most of the episodes which involved interacting with other crewmen ON BOARD the ship.

Right now the game is pretty much sounding like a Star Trek skinned version of Chuck Yeager's Air Combat with starships instead of jet fighters and a persistant environment with lots (theoriticaly) of other players in it. Sorry, but no thanks....  I'm sure that may appeal to some people... but for alot of folks.. it's just  not  going to cut it.
