MJ on subscription numbers:

" . . . EA reported that our sub numbers were at about 300K recently. I can also happily say that that we are not at 100K and we are doing just fine. If our subs had truly dropped from 300K in Dec. to 100K now, that would indeed be bad. Good thing they didn't eh?

Oh, and the whole 1.2 resulted in people quitting thing. Not according to the numbers I've looking at (and this doesn't take into account new subs from the trials) . . . "

I don't really care about it, but I've seen threads on subscription numbers here before.  Kindly troll / discuss this, I need something to read at my computer at work tomorrow, at taxpayers expense.

Total servers alive 15 US + 8 EU English Language = 23 alive

Total servers dead or dying 40 US + 18 EU English Language = 58 dead/dying

58 dead servers and general consensus from reading around is that the game is definately not at 100k subs maybe 200k now, peoples 6 month subs are not being renewed and it shows.

Well I don't really know but I think it would be reasonable to figure there is 10,000 actual players per server.  So you end up with 3 shifts of 3,000 (more or less) concurrent numbers.  Tho I would say you could argue some of those servers don't have concurrent numbers that high at any point.

So probably 230,000 to 250,000....

Honestly tho once upon a time that would have been considered a pretty good number.  Altho the total number of servers they opened versus can fill would still be bad.

Well I hope 50+ servers are dying like they should.  In Ocotober - November Mythic did massive server merges and left about 50+ servers to die out.

The average MMO has about 15 servers (except WOW).  CoH has 10 severs.  AoC has about 10 - 15.  DAOC has around 20 servers.  All of those hundreds of small Korean MMOs have about 10 servers each.  Then WAR launches and creates 50+ servers.

The fat that 15 US servers and 8 EU servers are sitll alive and strong means the game is doing fine and the server numbers are NORMAL.  The fact they still have other players on the dying servers is also quite interesting yet good news for them.

So I fail to see the doom and gloom of those numbers posted above.

There is no way that the WAR servers hold 10k players. Anyone remember what the president of GOA said on release? He said that each server was going to have 600 players per side, and after the launch they would increase it slightly. Now we don't know how much they increased it by, but I very much doubt it it was over 50% of the original number. i would be very surprised if the total number of registered accounts on a server goes past 5k.

Also this is just MJ playing with numbers again. they were losing over 100k subs a month between September and December (450k subs lost overall), so I very much doubt it they stopped losing subs in January until now. It might not be at 100k now as he said, but I very much doubt it's north of 200k. As the previous posted this would still be a nice number a few years back, but not when you spend 50M+ developing it.

Jez this is stupid. Who really cares if my subs are bigger than your subs?  There's no sign of it closing due to poor numbers at the moment, so play and enjoy.

I agree 10,000 a server is reasonable. Sounds like industry average. The numbers though.. 230,000 to 250,000 subs don't work based on the premise OF those numbers, actually.

They just announced yesterday at Mythic, they will be shutting down 43 more servers. That would leave them with about 15-17 NA servers (not counting EU), I believe. So, if we apply what is a reasonable number for each of the remaining servers after this 2nd Round of Server Closings you get:

17 servers @ 10,000 a server= 170k subscriptions. That would suggest in the coming weeks, only 170k max on all NA servers, or something close to that.

Now that is bad financially, but in terms of playability for those remaining to play, it helps them as there is much less dead space.

The real problem facing Mythic right now, is just how many six month subs or 3 month subs will NOT be returning, because that was not figured into the 170k above. I gave it based on what we look at today. So there is the possibility that it could go well under 170k for the first quarter of this year. If they have 170k now, that would put them in a near tie with what Age of Conan announced recently (110-160k, I think) and would give second place in MMO land easily to EVE Online.
