This site is the champion in the category of :

Site making Internet Explorer 7.0 freeze the most often.

I have very little freezes using IE 7.0, but here, i come visit this site on a daily basis and everyday my IE would freeze at least once.   I'm pretty sure it has to do with something being loaded OFF site, but i cant figure what it is.

Well hate to say it but your first issue is IE in general. Mozilla is a much better web browser hands down with far more options and better security. The only drawback is that sometimes you find some sites that refuse to upgrade and allow Firefox to work properly. if you love IE I guess keep using it though. I just logged in with IE7 and had zero issues here though.

The biggest issue with most people's comp's is that they fail to maintain them properly. Examples being monthly updates, defrag's, not allowing sites to load cookies and scripts without your permission, etc. Furthermore, it helps to keep the internal cab and and parts clean as well. The internet is getting so bad now with malware and spy software from places you may think you trust such as here, IGN, etc....

There is someone that I love, even though I don't approve of what he does. There is someone I accept, though some of his thoughts and actions revolt me. There is someone I forgive, though he hurts the people I love the most. That person is me.

Some people just prefer IE. It's not for you to dictate what somebody should use. Firefox may be better in your view, and before you start, I prefer Firefox myself. I do respect that other people may not feel the same though. And the newer versions of IE are getting closer to actully being standards compliant, and well maintained. Still some work to go in my view, but they're getting there, mostly from feeling the pressure of a competitor again.

Anyway, getting to the subject at hand...

The most likely reason I can think of that there are problems would be IE7's phishing filter, which is designed to make sure the site you are going to is a genuine site, and not some scam attempt.

There should be an option that will come up on the bottom toolbar with information about the phishing filter, and you may be able to click onto this, and get some options to allow it to procede. Another option would be to disable the filter altogether, if you feel safe doing so. You can disable it by following these steps in IE7:

Click on the Tools menu, and select Internet Options

Click on the advanced tab

Scroll down the list of options, until you find the option for Phishing Filter, it can be found in the Security area, near the bottom

Select the button in there to turn off automatic website checking, then click OK

That should disable the filter from kicking in automatically, so then you just need to give it a try, and see if that cures the problem.

Hope this helps :)

and then some of us don't have a choice as it is the only browser allowed on our work machines (because it is the only one supported by our core software company mainly).  To say we shouldn't be allowed to have a working site because we are forced to use a particular browser is pretty arrogant, and that is trying to remain nice.

As for the issues the OP has stated, I have seen them too, usually when I open forum topics normally.  Not always, but I tend to wind up with one such event every day I come out.

It's been running as smooth as a baby's bottom with Firefox. Sorry.

I've seen similar behaviour too on IE7 after the site revamp.

Oh and I have hated Netscape ever since it was 0.8 never out of beta. IE does what is required from browser at the most part, has somewhat consistent javascript support between the releases, unlike netscape/mozilla and is actully easier on memory too, not only on Windows, but Mac, Solaris... as well.

Only problems I've ever had with IE security have been some bit questionable sites I've visited due work related research and had some funnies inserted into harddrive via fully sandboxed Sun Java VM, hardly not a Microsoft problem there (Actually the defunct MS JVM didn't allow the download and installation of said funnies after I did some VM switching.

Of course, it is easy for the herd to join in bashing a big and visible target ;) Numerous mozilla security issues have little or none newscoverage.

on the subject of IE7 issues, ever since the site underwent a facelift I cant use the Hype meter.

It pops up, and I see an orange bar and a 1.  When I mouse over the orange bar it shrinks.  I cant expand it or change hype past 1.

I mostly use Google Chrome because it is way faster, and stronger. The only freezes you'll be getting with this site, is rare to NONE. You should dowload or try it, it totally works.

Hope I helped.

Big FireFox user myself (I hated netscape as well i also hate AOL but meh..) I don't much care for IE7 either and IE 8 only looks a little better imo.  But what is this Google Chrome you speak of?  Faster than which IE or Firefox or both? Does it offer more security than FireFox with stealth, nosript and ad blocker plus? If yes could you give any negatives that you have noticed (ie.. no playback support in-browser or something along those lines)  I plan on trying I would just like to know about any personal issue or praise that isn't available in a faq.

- EDIT:   LOL my bad i AM running IE 8 sorry about that hadn't really noticed as i usually use FireFox.....

*Added - For those that have any issues with sites that don't like firefox you can get an addon that will open those sites in IE with a click of a button..

This sounds like a possible solution to your problem. If not it might be worth taking a look at FireFox or Google Chrome as a quick fix to your problem. Its only a short download and install to fix your issue instead of hunting for help through forums ... just a thought.

Well, I just updated to IE8 RC1 and it fixed the issued I was having not being able to use the hype meter bar.

However, if compatability mode is turned on for IE8 the hype meter still will not work.  Theres a toggle to turn that on or off in the top right of IE8.  I just leave compatability mode off and it seems to work fine.

so my suggestion, if you want to use Internet Explorer is to download IE8 and leave compatability mode off.

I do need to add that Im experiencing more freezing up on this site than I did  before.  The site just freezes during page loading and I have to "end processes".  So, this may make issues worse for some of you.

I know a lot of you are trying to help by suggesting other web browsers and thats fine.  However this thread is about internet explorer and reporting issues with internet explorer in order to help the site address these issues for other users of this browser.  I dont think they just want to dismiss the native web browser for the main PC gaming operating system

but I do agree, if theres no work around within IE7 or IE8 for page freezing the only option at that point is to use another browser.  Hopefully the mods may have an idea of what could be causing issues with IE and thats what Im looking for

The reason for the hype meter not working is most likely due to older versions of IE being non-standards compliant. They decided rather than use the W3C standards, they'd make their own. There's several parts of javascript code that IE, by default, will not recognise. There are also some that IE will, but other browsers will not. It seems with each version just lately, microsoft are edging closer to the same level of standards compliance, but forcing compatability mode will result in those standards being discarded in favour of microsoft's own way of doing things.

Not really something that can be easily solved, unfortunately. There are ways to make a site use different sets of code for different browsers, but it's very lengthy to set up, and in some cases, can restrict what you can actually do with the site. With IE moving closer to standards compliance, I believe a lot of web developers are starting to drop the IE exclusive code, and go with the standards compliant code, in the hope this will get microsoft to get a move on and do the same.

While not developing for the majority may seem like a bad thing, I'd say from a programming point of view that trying to encourage a standards compliant code base is actually far more beneficial, as it ensures that future expandability is possible, and also increases the chance of someone else being able to take over work on the code, or assist on it, without having any problems transitioning to it.

Yea everyone has their opinions, but IE is really not that good of a internet/web client thingy.  Its security is less capable then Firefox, less features, and the download limit is more less.  I'd say that Firefox beats it, almost everything beats it, so they need to think of security.

The only time I have problems on this site is when using IE 8 on Windows 7, it constantly flashes when going over forums or viewing any of the flash on the site.  It only does it on this site, I can view flash fine on every other one.  It looks good using Google Chrome on Windows 7 though.. so thats been my default browser.... ... but maybe the flashing is an IE 8 problem?

I constatly have to kill Chrome due to mmorpg.com freezes.  it's the only site I have consistent problems with while using Chrome (pretty much the only browser I use).  Chrome is great, but it there are still problems At one point, I was unable to use either Yahoo Mail or Hotmail with Chrome.  There are also webpages that load properly in FF that don't load properly in Chrome.  This link is a good example.

You got chrome to work in Windows 7 (i am running 64-bit)  it just does nothing for me. I saw a work around but according to this google employee :

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=5111f112bcd233e1&hl=en

It is NOT a good idea to do this unless you don't care about browser security.

That person did say its a known issue that would have a fix at some point.
