I would say Final Fantasy XI because of the story line and the animations. It's totally underrated for what it is. I hope that the new FF online game will be better and get even more players.

WoW is the most fully developed game out there. I mean look at the player population, its not just people said look new game lets play that, WoW has 11,000,000 active players, no one else has that there's a reason. Admit it

Just because Britney Spears is popular and sells tens of millions of albums, does that make her music good?

I would argue that Jacqueline Du Pre created better music but was far less popular for example.

This is just a case in point.

Difference is that most gamers are adults and can think for themselves and I'm willing to bet most WoW players are over 16 and not kids like everyone says. Mmorpgs require a subscription and people wont continue to play a game unless they're having fun and if a game is fun then it is good. Music however is different because you don't play the same song over and over again for years unless you think it is good. Alot of it is bought as a gift and it's just one quick and easy purchse that people will buy cause they looka t the charts or their kids love it.

Thats why these whole arguments make no sense because for WoW to have all these millions of subs this long after release obviously means the game is good. The whole Mc Donalds argument is dumb because people eat for convenience on lunch breaks and what not and Mc Donalds tastes alright so people buy it. THe whole quality of the food doesn't even make sense anyways in the argument because the quality of WoW is much better than anyother mmorpg on the market, it is much more polished.

Everyone has their own opinion but you can't deny that it is good.

I never said it wasn't good but I never said it was the best either.  Many games have come after it which were better and yet they aren't as popular.  Who knows what people are looking for.  I guess it's a moot point really.

But having said that, my Britney example still stands and your arguement has many flaws in it.  I like your McDonalds example.........but it doesn't prove mine wrong.  Oh and McDonalds isn't actually food even though it's something you can put in your mouth.

So until someone can prove my Britney example wrong I will consider my example appropriate.  Like I said before, just because a lot of people like Britney Spears, doesn't make it good music.  Just because WoW is popular doesn't make it the best either.  Surely you can come up with a better arguement than the one above?

Good has around 9 different variations of the definition, but by most definitions Britney Spears is a good musician and WoW is a good game. Which is best depends on the version of the definition you use. Best can be the largest, the most advantage or success, the highest quality....need I go on? You're just being argumentive and no one likes a person like that. So you can either argue with reason, or just be ignored. It matters not to me.

I don't like Britney Spears and never bought her CD's, but if she sold the most copies then she is the best by Webster definition. WoW is the best by Webster definition.

Back on topic, the topic is about a persons favorite MMORPG, not which is best or which is good. I didn't realize I was off topic until now, so lets all get back on topic and stop derailing the thread. Let's all be mature adults and let people have their favorite game without belitteling them or being argued with because they like their particular game. The whole argument is stupid, so let this be an end to it. You can't argue with a Dictionary.

And the reason for WoW's success is mostly because of who made it. Most of the players from  WC3/other Blizzard Titles gave it a big start and it only went uphill from there.

That doesn't make logical sense. If the game was crap, it'd of only went downhill from there.

Alltime: AO, without a doubt.

At the moment, CoX though. That game is just too fun to group in. Nice community too, even though you sometimes bump into the mindless ones(scrapper that thinks he/she is a sologod in a rugged+ full group mission No heels for yoo)

I enjoy playing guild wars, mainly because of the free-to-play concept and slightly better graphics than WoW.

I also like Runescape, although i occasionally have a time off if i die, to dwell on the fact that i've just wasted 250k on full Rune armour and lost it in a wild case of greed.

But my favourite has to be Guild Wars. Probably more than i enjoyed Assasin's Creed. And that was a lot!

Pre Luclin EQ, I haven't enjoyed a community as much as I did in that game. It was also quite immersive, the zones were quite big, the dungeons were great fun, the raids and epic quests were fantastic, and grouping for EXP actually formed friendships in the game. You actually knew players on the server outside of your guild and formed alliances with other guilds for dungeons and bosses.

Griefing was even available to PVE servers with training and getting high rep with a town to attack a banker causing the guards to kill him forcing players to have to either wait for a respawn or travel all the way to another town, good times.

The lack of points on a map and other things holding your hand made the game feel more epic to me, you DID get lost on your first playthrough but that was okay because exploring was extremely fun until you died and had to travel about 3 or 4 hours to retrieve your corpse. You also did not want to die, which I liked, forcing players to learn how to play, it was extremely rare to find a capped player that had no idea what the hell they were doing. God I miss that.

Playing: EVE
and you better care

Without a doubt, CoX.  For some reason, I've had more of a social time in that game than any other MMO I've tried.  IOW, I've actually chatted much more with living, breathing human beings in this MMO than in any other.  This game is soooo easy to group in, and the Archetypes are so nicely done that the "holy trinity" isn't so essential.  Any old group composition will work for most missions, provided the players know what they are doing.  Even healers aren't a necessity.  The sidekicking/mentoring system is pure genius, allowing you to join in with higher level groups if there are none of your level about.  Despite its many flaws (most obvious: too little variety in map layouts) and its lack of features some pundits will have you believe are essential to make a social game (e.g. it's not a seamless world, it's mostly instanced), it ranks right up there as one of the best MMOs out today.

Apart from the ease of grouping and the sociable, chatty nature of the game, the two other feathers in CoX's cap are of course the amazing character creator and the combat itself, which is IMHO the fastest, most visceral, most spectacular implementation of point-and-click combat in any game, bar none.  The game engine is I think a bit of an unsung masterpiece.

Having said all that, after doing nearly 3 years of CoX and pretty much having nothing new to do, I've spent the last year MMO-hopping, trying out pretty much everything that's available.  And all of them have their good points - WoW is truly a great game and deserves all its success.  EQII has an enchanting atmosphere and loads of depth.  EVE is simply awe-inspiring.  AoC has excellent melee combat (it's the only MMO that beats CoX's melee for solid, thwacky "feel"), etc., etc.  But out of all of them, the game that I've returned to the most is Vanguard.

Again, despite a lack of polish and a general overall bugginess, Vanguard has shedloads of great gameplay.  The star of Vanguard's show is undoubtedly the world itself.  Telon is just a vast, vast world, and it's almost totally non-instanced - very much a "classic" sort of MMO design.  Classes are well designed, well balanced and fun to play.  But for me, Vanguard wins out for the same reason as CoX: it's just so easy to group and chat away with people.

Amusingly, it's actually easy to group in Vanguard for a totally different reason to CoX.  With CoX, it's the LFT and sk/mentoring system that's been very well designed to make forming groups easy.  The LFG system in Vanguard isn't as good (although it's not bad), but the quests are designed to some extent to "force" grouping in the classic fashion, and the population is good enough atm for this game mechanic to work quite well.

If anybody is reading this and hasn't played either of these games, I'd highly recommend giving them a try.  CoX for fast, visceral, addictive combat; Vanguard for the feel of a proper "classic" MMO, like most people on these forums seem to feel nostalgic about.

Good GAWD it's amazing how many of these posts on this thread were wasted dogging what someone ELSE said was their favorite game.

Title of thread:  WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MMO GAME?

(I see no mention of, "and if you don't like what someone else's favorite IS, be sure to say they're an idiot, etc., etc.)

That being said......

I started gaming with text based online games.  My first "real" MMO was Ultima Online, followed by Diablo 2 LOD Online (not really an MMO, but co-op multiplayer, at least), followed by Neverwinter Nights (also multiplayer co-op, not really MMO).  I'm 45 years old, and my favorite MMOs are (in order):

1- Lord of the Rings Online

2- WoW

3- EQ2

I've played/tried other games that are popular right now (EVE, GW, CoX, Vanguard, Warhammer, and others).  Those THREE I listed above....are still the best to ME....yes ME...it's an OPINION.

Of those three games....LotRO has the best community, in my opinion.  But I have had ridiculous amounts of fun with all three games and I played WoW for 4 years, added EQ2 after 2 years and played BOTH, and recently left both EQ2 AND WoW for LotRO.

I played some fun mmos but nothing has ever made me say they were really my favorite. They simpley can't compete with the likes of Diablo, Starcraft, Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights games. :) Sorry mmos I'm not so easy to please :P
